Thank you so much. I followed every bit of advice, used every recommended product and it came out amazing. I made one change. I hired a light scaffold system , designed for painting two stories. That way I was able to repair every crack , even small ones. Power washing was simple. So here is my theory. I don't think you can properly roller paint an upstairs with a extension , from the ground. If you think of it , you are 20 feet away from the point of contact. Pressing at the end of the extension, but at the top , where the roller is. You are just barely forcing paint on the wall. But with the scaffold, I was able to force the paint into every nook and cranny, every tiny little hole. Thanks again. Saved me a fortune and I have the best painted house on the street.

The finished result looks great Charlie, you can’t see those cracks at all and the house looks very smart. Carrier bags are a good way of keeping the paint off the paint tray, it takes two to cover the tray (one for the tray and one inverted for the roller area), and if you leave the paint to dry on them you can then reverse and turn inside out for the next painting - works surprisingly well. I like the tip with the hosepipe to clean the roller, plus you give your bushes a protective coat of paint during the cleanup as well 😁

Thanks Geoffrey. Great tip that I'll have to try. So everyone's recommending the Dandy Roller and brush cleaner. I have heard about this but never got round to buying. Slightly kicking myself now though!

@@CharlieDIYteHi Charlie, I have used the dandy cleaner.... TOP TIP - get some 100mm pvc pipe and a couple of sealable end stops (one for each length). Cut the pipe into a couple of 500-600mm lengths (just longer than your 18" roller). Fill one with water and leave the other dry. Spin your roller/brush in the water filled length... then spin dry off in the 'dry length' of pipe and this avoids you getting soaked by the spin off! If you only want to do one length for the dry spin off, you can of course just do that. But this method keeps the mess to a minimum! Hope it helps!

I’ve been doing the roller spinning thing for a while but in a deep bucket to catch most of the spray. If you can’t be bothered to keep emptying it turn it into a flower pot and have it above a drain area or soak away but I do it this way so I can pour it into a soak away. Great video, large rollers are great!

Fantastic channel love the video of painting your house. as a professional decorator for the last 37 years just wondered if you’ve got any paint on those terracotta tiles. I normally cover them in the course of my work because I do find it very difficult to remove any paint lands on them as it penetrates into the tile there are some quite good products out there for covering different areas tiles roofs patios when working as a decorator thought this might be an interesting subject to cover in one of your future videos

Great video as always. You mentioned the option of spraying your house, As a decorator myself I personally wouldn't spray outside simply due to the fact that you don't need much wind to carry the over spray potentially onto other houses or cars, I've known this happen before. People do spray outside and I'm sure it's a case of having experience and confidence. I've got a couple of small sprayers one being a q tech p 019 I think but I've honestly not used it in years. I honestly much prefer a brush and roller. Spraying is good but for me it needs to be the right job. Having said that I know other decorators who spray almost ever job.

Thanks Pete - I hadn't thought of the wind. Great point. Yes I think rollering is the better solution, particularly as Emperor recommend you follow up with a roller anyway if you're spraying.

To give a possibly unpopular view, I just sold on my Graco Ultra after having to replace the pump at an eye-watering £200 in just over a year from purchase. At over £600 I’m afraid I just don’t believe them to be fit for purpose (and I’m not the only one whose experienced Sue’s, just google reviews for it) and am now playing with a £30 hvlp sprayer, that although it has to have thinned down paint, is easier to clean and IMHO delivers comparable results to the Graco - oh and in a worst case scenario, it can be replaced for £30 - what’s not to like?!

Ok, cleaning the roller Charlie, lets keep you dry lol! Get a couple plasterers deep tubs, this enables cleaning various length rollers, a length of 6mm(M6) threaded rod (1000mm) Screwfix do packs of 5 for around £10. Most rollers use a 6mm hole to enable connection to the roller frame. The rod can be cut to a more reasonable length to fit standard 12inch rollers so lets say 35-40cm and all you need now is either 4 x M6 nuts or 2xM6 through hole knobs, these make the clamp to enable the roller to be spun and a drill of course. I also have a couple of M10 nuts epoxied together at the bottom of the tub that the M6 rod can fit into to give more stability, I have two because I added some epoxy into the bottom nut to prevent drilling through the plastic bottom. You can have two tubs one to centrifugally remove the paint, the second to spin the roller in water. I feel a fill in Charlie video on "Roller Cleaning Best Method" coming on lol!

Paint the gutters and the down spouts last know need too mask up, sheet your tie roof up. USE a Scrapper on your roller. Been a painting an decorating for 35 years. Get a 3 inch for cutting in.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lee. I think I would have struggled doing that. I don't know if you've seen my last video on the gutters but scraping off all the old bitumen and flaking top coat produced a lot of mess and it would have been hard to paint behind the down pipes without getting paint on the wall. Plus the chemical fixing to reattach the down pipe would have needed touching up.

Recently painted a small Victorian gate house in Little Green masonry paint up here in the northern Scottish Highlands - the weather can be quite extreme here, so I'm monitoring how it performs. It was a pretty expensive option. If it's any good, I will be painting the main house, which is a lot larger at approx 5500sq.ft. of floor area. But I'm interested in buying an airless spray kit due to the size of the building.

Great video Charle , have you ever considered having the render removed . It would mean then having the bricks sand blasted but it would save a lot of work and money in the long term . Best wishes and kind regards as always 😃👍👍👍

You could try a random orbit sander with these amzn.to/3QPShEX I sanded my concrete floor recently to prepare it for the tiling, with these and they worked well.

Hi Charlie - Like you my home is rendered but mine is a bungalow, so half the job done straightway LOL. Like you I have been using a roller but have you considered a paint sprayer. I am seriously looking at the Wagner Control 150M High Airless Sprayer 230V as you can also use it to treat doors and fences along with all makes of shed. Not saying you should look at that one, paint sprayers in general. Just an idea. Regards Chris

@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. Yes I think spraying would make a lot of sense and I do actually mention that at the end of the video. Emperor recommend you still follow behind with a roller though which defeats the object of spraying.
@Chris-BognorRegis
@Chris-BognorRegis 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie - Apologies, I did watch your video but I missed that bit about using the roller afterwards, like you say defeats the object. Not something Wagner say you have to do. Well come the New Year I propose to get a Wagner Control 150M High Airless Sprayer 230V and the first thing I will use it for is the 20 odd fencing panels I have. Will let you know how I got on if you want? Years ago and I do mean a long time ago I purchased a pack of brush and roller cleaning tubes at some large DIY show in London. Different sizes and they go into your hand drill, after you have got the excess paint off and you simply spin them in water until they are totally clean, you might have to change the water a couple of times. When clean you simply spin until they are dry. They work, I still have them and they are great. My dear old dad was a painter and decorator all his life and he thought they were amazing. Not seen them for sale since. Regards Chris

Nice work! I do wonder if a bit of bleach combined with the power washer would also have been good to tackle any light mold or algae. The emperor paint sounds similar to Kiem masonry paint. The breathability of paint is such a contentious issue. Temperature can effect the breathability of many paints. I think that no matter what you use there will be some issue with moisture - there does not seem to be a happy medium these days in building science - no one has the perfect climate inside or outside. But I do think that you did very good work on this project. Very impressed with the blending of the crack fillers.

Thanks Gregory. I'm forced to live with this tyrolean render like it or not although when I stripped off the external wall in the bedroom I'm kicking myself that I didn't repoint it as I don't want to say it's the source of those cracks but strengthening it would have undoubtedly helped. I just need to hack off those concrete plinths now, rake out the mortar and repoint. I might even use some of that Emperor Creme on them when I'm done. And then there's those remaining windows to replace. I'm having a bit of a nightmare with the new ones above (soft wood as that's what the budget would allow) as the paint isn't lasting 6 months on this south side of the house.

Thanks. They look as good today as they did. There is one section where the resin didn't set properly - probably because I didn't squeeze out enough before starting. The stuff is fantastic though. I'd use it again and again. I also like the Toupret for larger repairs.
