Stripped truss rod nuts: Ball end Allen keys are not intended for more than minimal torque applications. Their smaller contact area will cut through the softer steel of a nut. Use the straight end with fully engaged contact. "Stripped" may mean a damaged internal or external hex. It may also mean damage to the threaded screw portion of the nut and/or rod from over-torque, cross-thread engagement, or just plain old years of use under tension. The less expensive import hardware is made of softer metals, not sure that I could even call some of them steel. There seems to be a lot more truss and fastener damage coming through the shop recently.

Doesn't help that all the 4mm truss rod nuts aren't milled with very tight tolerances. Shame that all the manufacturers are too cheap to use the spoke wheel adjustments.

I learned recently, maybe in the last year or two, that CA lasts longer if you store it in the fridge. I've not Frozen it, yet, but I've read that it's freezing point is low enough that it doesn't solidify at the regular freezer temperatures. You can find a similar, though not identical, tailpiece to that on a Gibson Byrdland Thinline. The famous Gibson L-5 has that body shape but it's deeper and the tailpiece is different.

I've used cya type glues for years from model building to guitar repair.My experience is the longer it sets in the plastic bottle it melts into the plastic,and becomes useless goo eventually.Melting through is a trip though ..

Hey Dave, great point about the chemicals within the CA glue possibly melting the bottle. I know that CA glue “melts” things together to get them to stick but perhaps whatever plastic they use for the bottle is reactive to their formula. Still, they need to make it up to you and own up to their own defect by replacing the stuff it ruined. But I feel like they’d likely screw you over and say “well if you don’t have a receipt we can’t do sh*t”. I don’t know. We shall see what they do now. Also, a good title for Charlie’s next Chibson: The Great Brown Buffalo Chip.
@thedevilinthecircuit14142 ай бұрын
CA is not a solvent glue that chemically welds the materials being joined. It polymerizes through catalytic reaction with water molecules to create a solid acrylic mesh structure. I'm guessing the PE plastic bottle failed along a mold line.
@pasteye16712 ай бұрын
Dave, I bought one of these (figured maple body with Venetian horn, rather than Florentine as here). Only needed to polish frets (a little dull on arrival) and oiled the fretboard. Sounds and plays beautifully. I suppose it's pot luck with these Chibbies, some are great and some not. Unfortunately because they are all mail order, you takes a chance...

You know , if china just put in 100 bucks more into fit/finish and better quality control per instrument and charged like 400 bucks or whatever... yada yada. Like, you can get a neck for usually 75-100 bucks on the regular but its big-time roullette. Wouldn't you think there would be a chinese company that would take a little pride and make necks for like $130-140 and be on the level of mighty might or warmoth ?
@taimaishu-nao19222 ай бұрын
Sadly, the country you’re taking about is focused more on quantity than quality, even though there are genuine people who want to change the perception that “West Taiwan fakes everything” or only produces junk. West Taiwan needs to get their act together because they can build quality if they wanted to though their restrictive government says no.
