“Charlotte’s Web” is Terrific, Radiant, & Humble

Charlotte’s Web is a 1973 animated movie based on the classic book with the same name. The story follows the life of a pig named a Wilbur, who is worried he will be killed by the farmer and used as food. That is, until a friendly spider named Charlotte begins weaving complimentary words into her web in an order to appease the farmer into sparing Wilbur’s life. How does the cartoon iteration compare to the literary children’s classic? Join me as we take a look at Charlotte’s Web!

This movie was one of my childhood fixations. I used to watch it on VHS all of the time. I've since boughf this movie and Charlotte's web 2 on dvd, and tracked down the book. The pigs might fly book has similar vibes. I can still call up the songs from memory occasionally.

I haven't seen Charlotte's Web 2 yet, but I want to give it a watch. The book and the first movie are definite classics though!

Charlotte's Web truly is a classic. In the Japanese VHS dub of the original cartoon, Charlotte is voiced by Masako Ikeda, while in the Japanese DVD dub, it's Sayaka Kobayashi, while Monica Zetterlund did her voice in the Swedish dub.

This is my absolute favorite interpretation of the book. I used to watch it all the time as a kid on VHS and it still touches me to this day. Last time I watched it was about 5 years ago when I found my tape again. Maybe I should give it another watch in its original aspect ratio one day.

“Charlotte’s Web” was the first chapter book I ever read, before I was even six years old (and not long before the live action version came out) and even at that age I loved the story and appreciated the themes and the prose and the “slightly old-fashioned” (to me) writing style and of course that’s increased with time and age. I grew up with this movie as well as its sequel and the live-action version. Can’t believe this one is 50 years old this year! I reread the book for school in second grade and I showed this version to the class instead of the live action version they’d wanted, but they ended up loving it or at least liking it well enough. They even all turned around and looked at me when they recognised one of the songs from how I’d always be singing it on the playground and now they’d finally found out where it came from, lol.

I'd say that the movie actually is in some ways better, because it better shows us the lives of the animals and especially the humans. The only real significant things they left out were Charlotte's sister (apparently, she spun webs all over), and a visit Fern's mother had to her doctor because as you know, she talks to the farm animals and can understand them. I think that it should've stayed for character development purposes. Also, Zuckerman's Famous Pig is a bop

The concern her parents show is a subtly underrated funny moment. And that song definitely still plays in my head more than I'd care to admit!

There's a scene where Fern's parents are baffled by her talking about the farm drama and the animal's disdain for Templeton. It's a quick one. More funny then anything else.

​@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose That was a very missed opportunity by the directors, but for budgetary reasons, I can see why it wasn't expanded upon. Hopefully if there's a remake (a faithful remake that has the music), they can include that and the parental concern as a serious thing. Not like a major plot point of the entire film, but rather a sub-plot

I still love this interpretation and still shed a tear for poor Charlotte❤😢. Always a masterpiece of animation, but much like Chuck Jones' interpretation of The Phantom Tollbooth, it too wasn't appreciated by its creator. Luckily, it still has many fans, like ourselves , to enjoy it!❤

If you ask me, the Movie could have done without the "I Can Talk" Number; It comes out of nowhere, it brings nothing to the plot, and it's never touched upon again--heck, even after singing this joyous song, Wilbur goes back to being depressed and missing Fern. You could edit the whole song out between the close-ups on the Goose saying "You speak very well" and "Now, aren't you glad, glad, glad?" and you'd miss NOTHING at all... XD The "Lots In Common" Number is alright, because--while it doesn't add much to the Plot (save for the film allowing Jeffery into the film for half of it all)--it adds to Wilbur's personality of being very accepting towards any animal, even a creepy-looking spider that drinks fly blood like Charlotte or the runty gosling named Jeffery. Speaking of the young gander, there was a deleted scene that showed Jeffery being left behind and saddened by the fact that they went to the Fair without him. While consoling her own son, the Goose told Jeffery that it was time for him to learn how to "swim, swim, swim". Still, I do find it sad that Jeffery was still not seen or mentioned again, not even in the end. He was most likely sold when he came of age. I can't be too sad, though; He was never in the book, specifically.

I never heard of any of the books you mentioned ._. but I strangely remember the teacher reading us the scarlet fever novel when I was a kid and I never knew charlotte’s web was a book ethier,I've only watched the movie a thousand times when I was a kid though XD

I cry whenever i view this..as a kid and also as and adult..i guessing its the songs..dont know what It does to me so i avoid it..very beautiful cartoon though despite that It makes me personally sad.
