My finger-picking acoustic version of Hüsker Dü's Chartered Trips, written by Bob Mould, from the album Zen Arcade.

You're taking the Husker stuff to different level mate. Awesome.

+Pauleymack Thanks. It's just the way I like to play Bob Mould's songs because I'm not able to scream my lungs out like he does :)

A pretty vivid reminder of how Hüsker Dü were one of the only hardcore bands whose music could translate from loud, raucous electric guitar to a softer, acoustic cover. Great job!

I am sure there are more :) Chartered Trips, in particular, seems to be a Hüsker Dü favorite.

Now you need to do How To Skin A Cat on the 12-string...ha ha. Only kidding - this rendition, like your Celebrated Summer, is an absolute winner. Great to see someone who understands the Byrds/Donovan foundation underpinning Minneapolis' favorite sons' musical output. I saw them twice in the mid-80s and it was a full on wall-of-sound/noise - very advanced for its time. Few understood it then (and its debatable if indeed they understand it now)
@AnotherBadSpeech9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thumbs up, mate. I remember the first time I listened to HD - it was a Warehouse tape. At first it all sounded the same but once I started understanding the melody and great songcraft behind the distortion and raw production I became a fan. Still HU is a band I had a hard time turning friends on to.

Bob's signature sound on this original, is so amazing. The droning open strings through heavy distortion, made me appreciate him as a artist. So hypnotizing, his guitar sound.
@AnotherBadSpeech7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but actually I think this is one of the Huskers' songs that could have sounded better. It sounds too muddy. Nevertheless, an enormous song it is.
@markusantonio48667 жыл бұрын
AnotherBadSpeech Yes, bad production. You took this song and made it acoustic, and gave it a folk element. It demonstrates how crafted and talented they were. I knew someone sometime would take this song, and slow it down to it's roots. It already has the songwriting structure to it, and melody. Great job!
@AnotherBadSpeech7 жыл бұрын
Agree. Most of the Huskers' songs give great acoustic versions.

Fantastic rendering of what is one of Husker Du's finest songs from arguably the greatest album ever produced. Zen Arcade is a concept album surrounding views from a childs perspective in an unhappy home....hence "Said there's no returning from a chartered trip away". Listening to your acoustic version made me smile :) as I've only ever played it electrically. Awesome!!

Yeah, what Mr. Friendly said below. I come over looking to drop Celebrated Summer as a surprise into a playlist and found you. Actually I'm quite pissed that you couldn't nail one of the greatest guitar solos of all time! (I was a wondering if you were gonna try it as the song went on...since yer clearly that fucking good!) God that song has such a sick moment when Bob is just shredding...no fluff no noodles, just the bones of a guitar badass! Still my favorite recorded guitar solo of all time! But seriously, don't mind me I'm just a youtube idiot. You've made both of these two beautiful songs, even moreso! Gonna go and listen to them again. Gjoddang! Nice work!
@AnotherBadSpeech9 жыл бұрын
channelfjord Thank you so much. And, hell yeah, that's a truly great solo. It didn't cross my mind to insert a solo on this acoustic version, though. I don't think it would have worked.

@AnotherBadSpeech9 жыл бұрын
channelfjord Thanks mate. I would like to do more HD songs. I think they do great acoustic versions. Bob Mould's tunes in particular can do great folk-rock versions. Maybe Richard Thompson was a subliminal influence.

This just motivates me to give it a try! I love Zen Arcade! You're so good, I wish I could arrange a song like that, without taking the rawness out! How do you record? I've been thinking of getting a portastudio.
@AnotherBadSpeech10 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. As much as I like the rawness of Hüsker Dü's recordings I always thought that this song in particular deserved a better treatment. I love the fact that behind all the noise Bob Mould's songs reveal great songwriting craftsmanship. Love Grant's too, but those are usually simpler and more straightforward. My recording is very poor. I use a very noisy Fuji picture camera and it's as raw as it could - live in your living room :)
