The arrangements are all done by Yeon-ah Shin. She has an extraordinary understanding of music theory and just as a cute tidbit, her classes are actually specifically highly praised mostly because of her intimate understanding of musical theory.

Korea has grown into an unprecedented cultural powerhouse in East Asia. People around the world know that idol groups are the representative form of kpop today, but the spectrum of kpop you think is more diverse than you think. Of course, ballads that Koreans sing with their own emotions are unprecedentedly emotional genres of music. Korea is a world-class music art, but it is undervalued.
@oldsoul_anth2432 жыл бұрын
You can tell Shin Yeon-ah is highly influenced by jazz she phrases like one. As well, on top of her being the head of one of the most prestigious music universities, she does most of the arrangements of their songs. She also started the first girl group to debut from a University, Azer. And as you said, as an Adult Contemporary fan, I am really obsessed of her classic tone. Reminds me of my favorites, Ms. Dionne Warwick and Ms. Karen Carpenter.
@TheSeeking2know2 жыл бұрын
Shin is such a classy lady to me. She carries herself so elegantly and intellectually. Yes, Karen Carpenter vibes indeed. Just that Karen didn't go breathy or speak-y like Shin does sometimes (I am sure just for effect or expression in a more modern pop setting). When Shin connects and sings legato all the way through, her tone is velvet to the ears; a gentle caress.

Far-left, Shin Yeon-ah, has an ease to her voice because she's always in her mix or starts her mix very early like the guy in Melomance or Sam Smith. Since she so often has a higher placement hearing her juxtaposed to Lee Ji-young beside her is so nice with her heavier sound. It could be personal taste but being the low harmony having that depth to her sound is something you wouldn't find in female groups. Park Min-hye on the far-right sounds louder than Lee Young-hyun, even though LYH is the belter. If you could combine them into one they'd be the perfect singer but you'd miss out on these amazing live harmonies.
@TheSeeking2know2 жыл бұрын
Your point abut Shin being in her mix always is interesting. The juxtaposition is the charm of this group. If they all sounded alike or approached their vocals similarly then they would just be an average KPop girl group, but they are much more than that. I also agree that Lee Ji-young having to lower her larynx often as the low vocal harmony has become habitual even though I am sure she's capable of singing lighter or more mix-y. She is also a bit of a belt diva like Lee Young-hyun to her right and very soulful, dong growls and all sorts of riffs and runs. I was surprised when I realized that Shin was singing above Lee Ji-young in the harmonies because I feel her speaking voice is in a similar place to hers in terms of range. I feel Shin could sing low but maybe since like you said she's more of a mix singer, she would need to lower her larynx more to sing fuller lower notes if she was the lowest in any three-part harmony. Park is the Disney princess and the youngest, with the voice Chase and Melia prefer to sound like, which is all good.
@andrescsla7 ай бұрын
@@TheSeeking2know later response lol, but Shin actually sings lots of the low harmonies (Woman, Refusal, Love Alone and many more)

The harmonies are unbelievably good. clashing yet beautifully blended. They breathe at the same parts. That dissonant/clashing harmony that feels kind of ethereal. Shins mix belt also just floored me. Supported, resonant. Ji Young grabs her ear a few seconds before she goes; telling me it must be incredibly resonant

The one on the 2nd left reminds me a bit of Toni Braxton? IMHO these women as a whole are stronger vocalists than the 90’s R&B girl groups I grew up loving to listen to. I’d love if you reacted to the vocalist Golden/GSoul. He’s one of my favorite singers right now and reminds me a bit of Musiq Soulchild & Maxwell.
@antoinetteantigo66002 жыл бұрын
I respect that you guys are experts of music. And you probably sound great. It's great that you are reacting to the singing of these singers who have more experience than you. Half the time you sounded like you guys are saying that Lee Young Hyun has awful techniques. As one of her biggest fans , I felt like I really needed to leave this comment because it is almost as if you're saying that she has no idea about what she is doing. I can tell you a lot about her, her group and their role in Hallyu but I think there isnt any point to doing a litany of what the group has done over the years to many Korean and Southeast Asian Professional Singers and those who sang in hotel lobbies and small venues, like myself because your channel dissects singing and voice as an instrument not much as an expression of the soul and a journey. Reading the description of your channel, I sort of understand why you are so particular about the technical aspects of singing. I agree that the voice is an instrument and we must look after it for it to stay in great condition for a long time but I think music isn't just governed by the science of singing. I think there's a lot to it than just techniques. AND I think that's the reason a lot of singers and groups who stay in the industry for a long time not only for their techniques but for their expression, their emotive ability to connect with people. You probably know this one too because you are experts. I love Big Mama, each and every one of them . I adore them not only for their singing abilities, but their stage presence, their charisma, their laughter on stage. If you would be keen to look for more videos, you'll find that there is so much more to them than what meets the eye and what travels through the eardrum. From Lee Young Hyun's health journey to everyone's commitment to professional development, this group is quite inspirational, which I think makes them really special as musicians and as a group because it is reflected in their performance, the way they deliver the message of their songs. Anywho, I'm talking way too much when all that I wanted to say was you went overboard with the criticism of Lee Young Hyun's voice that you seem disrespectful to her institution and your compliments were not sounding sincere either. Of course, each to their own and I respect your opinion. I just thought you need to hear a "reaction" of your reaction to Lee Young Hyun from one of her fans. All the best!

Well, you were talking about how the woman on the left doesn’t use audible breaths like the other lady who is doing a lot of belting, and I just wanna say that that’s really the difference because when you’re singing more gently you’re gonna need to take in less of a breath in the first place. So that’s the reason why she’s able to take in less audible breaths.. It’s not necessarily like a technique issue in the one who’s taking audible breath[In fact she’s using the best technique considering the style she has chosen to sing with], it’s just that her approach to singing is different and makes her need to take audible breaths. She needs more power and more support to do that, which is why she’s using audible breaths.

I found myself bristling at the way you described the 2nd to the right singer. It felt like a criticism of what is the proper style for the genre. Gospel, R&B, soul, etc. is stylistically covered and supposed to be a heavier sound. I hear you say that you're just "listening technically" but I think you're concept of technique is rooted in a Euro-centric technical framework and a misunderstanding of technique appropriate to style and genre. If you listen to soul and R&B singers these women are emulating (Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle, Toni Braxton...) you'll notice that the technical choices are integral to the genre. The technique of soul is sometimes contradictory to European style vocal technique and if you aren't trained in it, it can cause strain and possible damage. "Technique" is a word used like it's a system with firm rules but all technique is framing. In the Korean genre of Pansori, professional singers are expected to sing in a way that intentionally causes damage to the folds to build on the vocal equivalent of calluses which allows them to sing in a way that European technique would say is "bad technique". As an opera singer who comes from a southern gospel background, I took issue with your framing of technique in these videos as something that simply is good or bad when technique is relative to the musical context and that's especially clear in this group. The singer on the far right is incredibly consistent and stable which is pivotal for a group like this with so many soloists but individually I don't believe she is as successful stylistically. The minute Park sings, the style is shifted to a more Pop and Ballad sound. It's nice contrast in the group and she's definitely a linchpin for the overall sound, but it's technically dissonant to the style. To my ears, it sounds like an opera singer singing musical theatre. It's not bad. It sometimes works really well, but it's not always technically appropriate. Overall, I recognize that you weren't intending to pit the artists against each other by revealing your preferences, but it's hard to do that when you're critiquing technique without regard for style. This was a whole dissertation and I'm sorry for that. I just feel like this commentary was lacking that nuance, and I wish more vocal coaches with platforms would recognize that technique is contextual rather than simply *is*. The technique that works for you is simply the agreed upon path to the genre(s) you would like to sing well in.

Kim Jong Kook is the 2nd person only in Korea that receives 3 Grand Award from 3 major station for his song (SBS, KBS, MBC) in the same year. The first person who achieved this feat is Cho Young phil in 1980s and also the song that Kim Jong Kook remake in his last song on dingo killing voice is Cho Young phil's old Song. After Kim Jong Kook Receive 3 Grand Award in the same year, korean major station make changes to the rule that the same person cannot receive 3 Grand Award in the same year again. So you will not regret it hearing his song, because he is Korean Legendary Triple Crowned Singer and Also Korean Legendary 1st Generation Kpop Idol in 1995 with million seller album everytime releasing the album.
