You must watch this video: song so hee - tearful duman river - The title of the song in this video is “Tear-Soaked Duman River,” which sings about the sadness of losing the country to Japan. I think it is the most accurate song to feel Korean folk music. (The story that became the motif for the lyrics of Duman River... A woman waiting for her husband who crossed the Duman River to join the independence movement in Manchuria during the Japanese colonial era... A woman who cannot leave Duman River even after hearing the news of the dead and cries out every day for her soul to come back... Now her husband A woman who missed her so much that she took off her shoes to search for her soul...) I can't speak English so I used a translator and I watch all your videos. Thank you always for your videos.

While her cover of Spring Day is one of my favorites because she really captures the emotions of the song using the traditional folk song style. I think her other covers on immortal songs really capture her singing capabilities way more. I definitely recommend her other covers as well. Shes so amazing Shes trained in traditional folk singing since she was 5 years old. I believe shes trained with three different folk singers. One of which is considered a 'Living National Treasure'. Korean folk singing is quite different from the modern singing in kpop which you guys have alluded to in your breakdowns. :)

That breathiness is is not only a stylistic choice, but also part of her training as a minyo (operatic pansori) singer. Such singers try to obtain this sort of bluesy voice by singing in such a way that their throats bleed during the early stages of development.

To put it simply, the instruments are different. To put it simply, Western singing style imitates orchestral instruments. It's resonance. Song So-hee's singing style imitates string instruments. Frequency, friction, and vibration. In other words, it is similar to a violin. The difference between these singing styles lies in what each was created for in the past. This traditional singing style first began as a public reading of a novel. You will be required to read in a noisy place in front of a large group of people for at least three to four hours. The amount of reading you have to do is enormous. Can this be done in a Western singing way? There are two ways to hear clearly from a distance. A method of spreading widely using resonance and a method of compressing vibration and shooting it clearly. Among these, this is the method that transmits large amounts of data quickly over a long period of time. Low energy consumption. A similar singing method in the West in terms of the way it produces sound... rockers sing like this. Modern singers do not use the classical resonance method. This is because the microphone amplifies the sound, so there is no need to transmit the sound too far on your own. The singing style you are seeing now. This is because its origins originally started from reading books. If you don't understand, try reading a full-length novel for 5 hours using Western resonance. You'll immediately understand why that doesn't work.

Song SoHee is a "Gugak" (traditional Korean folk) singer who has grown up with this music since childhood and has graduated in traditional music. She is an absolute MASTER OF HER KRAFT. What you hear are traditional Korean singing techniques that she has mastered perfectly, what you probably noticed most are the guttural "THROAT SOUNDS"). Throat singing "pansori" is part of traditional music in Korea and is considered one of the most difficult singing techniques of all. (It actually resembles "yodeling").

To understand her techinique better make sure you listen to "Tearful Tumen River" where she sings it almost acapella. I think what stuns us westerners is the diaphragmatic vibrato she is using, as a trained Pansori singer from very young (she cruises TV Shows from under 10 yo I think) plus modulating her notes with her mouth shape keeping everything else still. She is also a very efficient scorer in football 5x5. 😀👍👍👍👏👏👏

She's been training to sing/studying gugak/minyo since she was 5 and is basically a master of her craft. And let it be known that even though she primarily performs using traditional Korean vocal techniques, she is more than capable of performing in more contemporary styles, such as in her cover of Jaurim's Twenty Five, Twenty One, which she performed on Yoo Heeyeol's Sketchbook and I highly recommend checking that out :) I would personally recommend her Immortal Songs performances of Haeeundae Elegy of 자진뱃노래 (Jajin Boat Song), the latter of which is Korean folk song that she performed with a modern fusion flare. Or check out her Killing Voice episode to hear a wide range/variety from her, or even some of her original songs such as Infodemics, Ganggangsullae, or Forest Spirit!

There are also differences in musical differences. In Western music, if you sing or play after reading the score, the results will be almost the same. Korean music is never like that. The reason there are so few scales is because that is enough. Because those scales are like flags that you have to pass on skis. You can fill that large empty section as you wish. The goal may be the shortest distance, or it may be a graceful stunt. Therefore, even if you play the same score, you can get completely different results. So, schools are divided, and each school puts in what it considers important. The results are completely different. Therefore, they are trained in an apprenticeship manner. It can only be transmitted between people. This is because the philosophy of each school is transmitted.

she is one of the famous 'Gyunggi Minyo' successor, which is a part of korean traditional music so called 'Gugak'. And the way they sing, especially the vocalization is totally different from western world. the main controller is the belly as well as their inner neck. there is a saying in korea that in order to become a right traditional singer you need to bleed inside your neck several times. recently it is regarded as exaggerated and interpreted as hard training requirement of this unique traditional genre that has been formed through hundreds of years.

It's really fascinating how you guys analyze and explain her singing while you don't have full knowledge about it. I think that's pretty much what she explained on the TV show . She said "Kuk-ak(traditional korean sining) is kind of like the western classical music, it has the right answer. It's very technical. There's a not much space for personal expression compare to pop music. It's primarily about practicing those traditional technics, and building them a bar by bar. Persnal style comes in the end."

It's very closely related to throat singing, which you can find in almost every culture. So the sound she makes comes from deep in throat. You can check native singers, Ukrainian folk,Russian folk, the same yodeling uses throat, midle east the same. Lots of countries in the world still hang on to old traditional style and incorporate into modern songs. Unfortunately, in the American/ Canadian music market, you will never( almost never) hear music from other countries unless you are looking for it. So, this is a common sound for most of the world. Maybe you can check the folk songs of the world? That would be interesting, maybe not popular but still interesting.

so as people have said she's a gugak singer (the sort of catch-all term for traditional korean singing style that goes back basically since recorded korean hisotry). The particular style of singing most people will default to is pansori (which she does not do). She is considered a "folk" singer (minyo) and specifically from the region of Gyeongi (the various regions all have their versions of Minyo). Pansori is almost like a bard done with 1 person and a drum and the songs are kind of just a line that's telling a story (hard to explain) and is much more "harsh" sounding. She's a folk singer, and that style is much more "song" oriented and prettier Now while she's not technically a pansori singer....a LOT of the techniques are somewhat similar. That sort of not clear/back in the throat style of singing is a hallmark of these styles overall along with bending notes and the voice wavering, etc etc. To explain that tension/open thing....you're both kind of right. Back in olden olden times how these singers would train is basically they'd go to the mountains or a forest and just yell and yell and yell over and over til they basically damaged their vocal cords. They would let it heal then just repeat that over and over. so that the vocal cords almost "toughened" up. The result is this incredibly RAW tone that just sort of explodes/attacks out of the mouth (whihc you pointed out). That's sort of the textbook gugak vocal tone that incredibly strong/loud/raw sound that explodes out of the mouth even though there's absolutely no tension and her mouth is barely open. That is the type of sound that the old pansori singers achieved with that old technique (these days there are far more specialized and safer techniques to achieve that). So she's actually singing open in the sense that her vocal cords are wide open but her actual vocal cords are just different now compared to yours. Its basically a totally different instrument. In alll honesty, I winced a little when you guys were trying to do it not bc it sounded bad but bc there is just no way for a western trained vocalist to achieve that without a HUGE chance of injury I went to a gugak festival in korea and i can't really properly explain how LOUD these voices are while their mouths were barely open and so relaxed. There was a visual-hearing dissonance going on in my brain the first time I attended live If you want to really hear what minyo singing really is (obvi this is BTS).....the style, techinique, music chord structure.....she has a Killing Voice and a few of the songs are minyo

What a surprising reaction!! Love it, she's so impressive every single time. Would be so cool if you checked out XIA's Killing Voice, I think you'd really enjoy it. He's such an astonishing singer with a very distinct sound, and has a stunning musical repertoire (fun fact, he played the same role in Xcalibur like DK!)
