Because nobody else didn't, l tell (again 😅) the backstory of this wonderful melancholic song. Zacharias Topelius (a Swedish speaking Finnish poet, writer, scholar etc.) wrote it to honor his one year old son Rafael's sudden death. The "sparrow" in the song is the spirit of the boy coming from the Land of Angels, to whom his sister ("the girl") gives the seed. Very touching. I can't sing or hear this without tears 😭. This performance is beyond excellent. Merry Christmas to all from Finland! ⛄🎅🎄

I am from Slovakia. I moved to Northern Finland something over 3 years ago. I love raskasta joulua and seen them live already four times. In 2019, I played two gigs in a row over 600km north of Helsinki. Then, early morning, I took a plane to Helsinki, had a little bit of rest at friends' and headed to Hartwall arena. And attended this concert. After it, I felt like my legs don't work anymore. But it was all worth it. This was one of the most magical experiences, seeing this concert.

Sparrow on a Christmas morning was originally a poem written by a writer called Zacharis Topelius in the late 1800s after the death of his young son. It's nowadays the most beloved Christmas song in all of Finland, and gets voted the most beautiful year after year.

He actually lost 4 children, one stillborn and all before the age of 3. Simeon and Rafael were the names I think of the boys, maybe Rafael was the one referred to here, as your brother who died last spring. Names of angels, nonetheless

Yes, this was beautiful. I saw it live in Helsinki last year. Actually that man who played the solo is the guy who came up w this Heavy Christmas- concept, Erkka Korhonen. They started in 2004 in small clubs only few shows per year. I found them in 2008 and seeing them live is now my holiday starter. Been there in the crowd for 11 yrs now. Nowadays in huge arenas. Originally there were only male singers but then when things began to grow and more n more audience found them a few metalgirls have joined the gang. I've seen Elize Ryd, Floor Jansen and Tarja Turunen on board. Tommy Karevik, Joe Lynn Turner, Dee Snider and Bernie Shaw have also made their appearance in the line up. But it is the finest singers of finnish metal scene that brought me to their shows in the first place. So shout out to Marko Hietala, Tony Kakko, Jarkko Ahola, JP Leppäluoto, Pasi Rantanen, Ilja Jalkanen, Ari Koivunen, Kimmo Blom, Ville Tuomi, Antony Parviainen, Tuple Salmela, Antti Railio. The band is drummer Mirka Rantanen, bass Erkki Silvennoinen, keys Vili Ollila and the two guitarheros are Erkka Korhonen and Tuomas Wäinölä.

Holy cow. Trinx, you knocked the ball clear out of the park with this selection. Absolutely breathtaking. I *adore* the Raskasta Joulua songs, and although neither I, nor my fiancee understand Finnish, their performances have become an annual staple in our house, *especially* during the holidays. This, though? Un-fucking-believable. The combination of Marko's voice and his wiry, contorted body language with the instrumentation gives me such an overwhelming sense of tension, dread, darkness; all of the things that makes Winter a force to be reckoned with. I looked up the history of the song, and the poem that originated it, and I am just fucking blown away. It's easily been 30 minutes since I listened to this for the first time, and I'm having a devil of a time shaking the feelings this performance gives me. Chase, thank you for selecting this song, it's going on my Playlist *immediately*. Additionally, I have to tell you, I about fell out of my chair laughing from the "Santa Pause" pun. Great job, excellent reaction, short and sweet video. Looking forward to seeing your next video tomorrow morning!

This is one of the best christmas songs ever created. When I was doing my military serveice our 20 guys unit had spent almost 3 weeks in forest and when we got to truck bed that was taking us back to barracks and x-mas holiday one of my friends started to sing this and few seconds later almost every guy was singing it including harmonics. Most of our unit had musical back ground (possibly due to the reason we had to learn morse code and the ones that succeeded best of that first test to get in to that special unit of the whole prigade where musicians). Anyway, when we started singing I clearly remember many of us sobbing a bit. This was in the mid 2000..

Cheers! According to Finnish Christian church's magazine, about 30% (edited, remembered wrong) of Finns believe into the Bible narrative. Rest are agnostics, atheists (I'm too) or have some other philosophies/faiths. Almost everyone still celebrates Christmas but not as a religious celebration. In fact Finnish Christmas has lots of pagan age traditions behind it, including Yule Goat (Joulupukki, the Finnish version of Father Christmas/Santa Claus) his elves and Christmas tree.

I believe Floor was also there one year. They tour around Finland and the concerts are all sold out. That’s how metal we Finns are 😎 Oh I need to add that almost all the artists are Finnish and sing in finnish, so don’t rush buying those tickets yet, folks 😄

Interesting choice for a reaction video. This is a classic Christmas song in Finland, just performed at Raskasta Joulua, a festival where famous singers from various Finnish metal bands interpret classic Christmas songs, this being one of them. Obviously there are also super talented guitarists doing solos for the songs. As you said, Marco is a beast on the vocals.
