This touching song is one of the most loved Finnish Christmas songs. Zacharias Topelius wrote the lyrics (originally in Swedish) 1859 to honor the sudden death of his one year old son. The sparrow is the dead boy's spirit coming from the land of Angels, to whom the sister gives the seeds. This performance from Marko and the choir is excellent. Your observation on the role of nature in Finnish vs American xmas songs was interesting and accurate. I always thought it's funny that in the Finnish version of White Christmas, instead of "dreaming" of snow, the lyrics are about "yet another white christmas" lmao. Bc snow during winter is a given here to the point of annoyance, I suppose "dreaming" of a white xmas would be equivalent to saying, dang, i wish the annual flood this year will be actually wet this time round

Astute observation about the nature elements. Finns do still fortunately respect the nature and connect with it. Also, even long after Christianity had settled here some animistic beliefs stayed alongside it.. one of them is that dead people's spirits can inhabit animals (I guess part of the respect toward nature and animals is that you never know which one of them is your dead relative :)

dang i never seen this video before. when last reaction make c spirit up, this going to the space. very sad song but beautiful. marko and choir doing great job. when you mention finnish heavy metal connetion to the nature,i think you right. when we start to thinking finish heavy band like amorphis,sonata arctica,winter sun, nightwish,korpiklaani and many more, there are many times something nature connection. thanx again good Christmas high lights :)

Did you know Finns and American Natives get along really well? When Finns first arrived in the US, they made friends with a couple of tribes. One tribe eventually started calling them "those who are like us", referring to the lifestyle of the Finns. Today there is a whole tribe of "Finndians"! ❤

(For me) a child choir represent the innocent, angels, like also the Holy Spirit is represented by a bird; the dove. So if spoken about a sparrow we add a bunch of items important to the song. When the sparrow spirit animal makes its way into your life, you are being advised to rely more on the people that are close to you. This means that you don’t need to hesitate when you need assistance. Sparrows show their power through their numbers. The message you get from this is that you should not over-rely on your own strengths. The sparrow spirit animal shows its strength through communal involvement. Their protection comes in their numbers. They believe in group work. When they act as a team, they are simply unstoppable.

Ahh I saw him sing this live twice last year. ❤ It was wonderful. 😊 His friend JP Leppäluoto (who also performs with Raskasta Joulua every year) sings his own version of it which I have to admit I love more because he's my favourite Finnish singer, and also because he really shows his range.
