I really do like both of them. Yes, I like the interpretations of one of them more, but that doesn't mean, I want to belittle the other one. For me it is that incredible ability of Floor, to colour up the vocals with bucket loads of emotion, that makes me prefer her.

I love Tarja's voice! Thank you very much ❤ Fun fact: Tarja was sick in this Concert. She had flue or something like that in her throat. Nightwish has 9 studio albuns: 5 with Tarja, 2 with Anette, and 2 with Floor. So, there is a lot of Tarja stuff for you to know, if you decide to know Nightwish's works. A lot of the old songs are sung by Floor nowadays, but in a diferent versions. Floor and Tarja are amazing, but they have diferent voices, so the band needed to do some adaptations. The music with Tarja used to explore more choirs as you noticed. The original "Ghost love score", for example, emphasized the choirs and the orchestra. It didn't have the same ending like you can watch with Floor. They are diferent versions, but equaly good. From Tarja's era I suggest any music from the concert "End of an Era" or "From wishes to eternity". To the next steps, It would be nice if you reacted to "Phantom of the Opera" and "Slaying the dreamer", both from "End of an Era". Thank you very much!

Hey, Chase. Tarja is amazing, isn't she. I'm coming to appreciate and admire her more and more. She's an extremely charismatic performer and singer. At first, I was so enthralled by Floor that I didn't want to know about anyone else. But now I dig Tarja a lot. Hell, I even love Anette. @@bygoneegowaitingremoval As you might have noticed, for some reason my comment was marked, meaning someone already took offence by it. Although I can't seem to find an explanation for that I am trying to stay as friendly as I possibly can. Having that said : I must admit that Anette was my least favorite as well, but I do try to keep in mind that she had some very big shoes to fill and we didn't want to see Tarja leave. I wonder what would have happened if it would have been Floor after Tarja in stead of Anette. Would we still like Floor so much?

@@bygoneegowaitingremoval I usually wouldn't respond, but you look genuinely open to suggestions. My recommendation is to look less at Anette's vocal techniques and more at her ability to play a character in Scaretale and Slow Love Slow. Listen to her be a folk storyteller in Turn Loose or Meadows of Heaven or even the backing vocals in The Islander. I think next to the other two, people are looking for vocal technical ability but consider that for Tuomas' work what they really need to be able to do is take the role of a character as if it's musical theatre.

@@ari-etta it´s true that I can´t know now what my reaction would have been, but I love Floor more than Tarja not because of her voice (each of them has their own style) but because Floor delivers more perform-wise in my opinion, on stage her presence it´s more captivating than Tarja. That said, I would probably have had fewer problems with a change to Floor directly from Tarja.

I'm always surprised at how everyone seems to want that one, when that was the main point of contention that finalized the 'yep, that's it, we're giving her the letter'. She is so in and out of time with the rest of the band in that particular concert on that piece. And you can tell how hard Marco and everyone is trying to adjust and bring it back in throughout the whole piece. It's Nightwish, so it's not that big of a deal I guess, but for those of us with a sensitive ear it is so grinding compared to everything else they did, and have done since. Including with Tarja. I just wish she would have kept going to rehearsals with the band. They would have kept in sync better not just on stage, but with each other. I guess we wouldn't have discovered Floor, and she is indeed amazing and fun to listen to as well... you just miss what you grew up with. lol

Amazing reaction! Thank you so much Chase! Tarja Turunen was the original Nightwish vocalist for almost a decade, defining a big part of their sound with her classically infused vocal techniques which combined perfectly with Nightwish's inicial power metal and later symphonic metal sound, and also with Marco's vocals - it was a perfect match in every way! The great thing is that Tarja has been having an amazing solo career in the last 15 years... Her voice is high, but also a full and really powerfull sound (and she always keeps on experimenting new things with her vocals, including a haunting dark and lower register she can belt out), plus having this theatrical presence on stage... I'm so glad you liked it! As a sugestion, I'll leave you 2 links for some Amazing Live performances by Tarja Turunen in recent years: 1st - A very energetic Live version of "Victim of Ritual" (song composed by Tarja)... the crowd really goes wild at this one - from Woodstock festival: kzbin.info/www/bejne/famnn5uYfLl9idU 2nd - An unbeliavable version of "Supremacy" (a Muse cover) Live at Hellfest festival - very powerfull high notes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ6wc3yVZb1mpac I hope you enjoy these ones as much as I do! I would love to see her do more crossover projects as her mystical, dark soprano would fit the neoclassical dark wave, avant garde or classical crossover genre, maybe collab with HAVASI or Yoshiki X-Japan.

This song actually has a very special and influential place in the band's history, as the song that unintentionally brought many fans into the fandom. Way back in the early days of KZbin, an era of Linkin Park AMVs and dubious copyright controls, there was a misheard-lyrics video someone made called "Fishmaster" that you'll find many people quoting down in these comments. It was goofy and shareable, and left many thinking "lol what's this ridiculous foreign metal band doing trying to sing English"... but enough people (myself included) were intrigued by the cool music and looked for more Nightwish content. You gotta understand, this was before labels like Nuclear Blast etc. had uploaded all their bands' music videos online at all, and literally the only way for most non-Europeans to be exposed to symphonic metal and such was to have it shared with them directly. Quite a few members of the Nightwish Army were initially roped in by Fishmaster/Wishmaster, and every time I hear it I get a nice wave of nostalgia. :-) "Hamster... a dentist... hard porn, Steven Seagull..."

To answer your question about roster changes: They booted their first bassist, Sami, somewhere in between the "From Wishes to Eternity" live recording and the Century Child album, which was when Marco joined the band. Then, of course, they kicked out Tarja after the aptly named "End of an Era" live recording. She was replaced by Anette Olzon, who received a mixed reception from the fans. A big plus side was that you could for once clearly understand the lyrics, a big negative was that all the operatic elements were gone. After some complications during the Imaginaerum tour, Nightwish had to rush in Floor as a stand-in for Anette. Soon after, Floor became the new vocalist and Troy was added as a permanent member of the band. Since Jukka, the drummer's insomnia kept getting worse, Kai stood in for him, some years later the decision was made for Jukka to permanently quit drumming and become a manager for the band instead.

At about 45 secs you can see Empuu talking to Troy telling him what he is going to do. At about 4:00 you see Empuu go behind Floor and turn down the volume or turn off her in-ear monitor. Then she reaches behind her. The funniest part is at about 4:30 when Empuu crosses the stage again. Floor turns around to watch him so he can’t do it again. Here you see the height difference between Floor’s 6’1” in heels and Empuu’s 5’3”. They laugh at each other. Come to Toumas, without taking away his gifted talent in composing, I rather disappointed when comes to his mannerism in firing Tarja right after this awesome concert. His (including other members) character assassination of Tarja is still affecting how some Nightwish fans see Tarja and dismiss her contribution to the early Nightwish. Anyway, "10th man down" from Summer Breeze Festival 2002 is also very impressive of Tarja's performance.

@ChaseCarneson like you, I am new to this wonderful world of Nightwish. I grew up a RUSH fan and am used to cerebral lyrics and masterful musicians, but I am blown away by the talents of this group. It is awesome to see someone who has a your background display an almost giddiness for the band. I know the feeling. I do see some really common denominators and would love to hear more from you on this. First is Tuomas. His passion and pure genius to architect an epic sound whether it is a 4 minute or 20 minute song is almost hard to put into words. Second is Marko. I have seen Marko collaborate with Delain (Charlotte W), Exit Eden, Northern Kings, Anneke Van Giersbergen and the man just makes everyone better. I hate saying he is complementary because he has no issues by himself. I saw you with Julia react to While Your Lips are Still Red and loved the amount of info and insight that you bring. Please keep up the great and it is great to meet another member of the Nightwish Army (Frisco, TX, USA).

Marco he is of course...as he has been since Century Child album - awesome bass player and male vocalist. Tarja's impact is not less than fundamental to the sound and voice of Nightwish. She founded this band with Tuomas and Emppu. They made it great, special and world famous on five albums together as that group. Later came replacement singers to copy the sound, adopt already created basics and to modify it for themselves to fit better.

actually, this symphonic sound was their 3rd..Tuomas formed Nightwish with Emppu and Tarja to best showcase her magnificent classical mezzo delivery featured most effectively by the "from wishes to eternity" concert, then graduated to more pure metal sound in "summerbreeze 2002" concert and then finally this concert of a much more symphonic metal nature..Ghost Love Score from this concert is a prime example

actually, Chase, you should know that for the first 6 years of their existence, their signature sound was one of power metal type, found in "from wishes to eternity", than it transitioned into a more mainstream metal such as "summerbreeze fest. of 2002 and Raumenmari 2003" and then by their last tour, it became symphonic in nature, with Tarja using chiefly , her superb head voice

I've been listening to NW for 20 years, I've been lucky enough to see Tarja, Anette and Floor live. I'm a huge fan of Tarja, but I must say, I'm not entirely sold on her late live performances with NW. I think I remember reading an interview where she said she tried to switch her style a little and sound less operatic and mix a bit of rock in her style. I much prefered how she sang live before Once/End of an Era. She was so much more emotional, she gave me such goosebumps back in the day, the way Floor does it now (of course, it's just my personal opinion !). Just listen to the Beauty and the Beast with Tony Kakko live in 2001. Anyway, thanks for another great video and great analysis, your channel is a gem. Would love to see you tackle Muse one day. Maybe Butterflies and Hurricanes live at Wembley ? I would love to hear what you have to say about it !

Yes, she changed her vocal approach. posted this in one of Chase Carneson's other reactions: -------- Tarja era, nearly 20 Years ago, before she studied at the Karlsruhe conservatory and changed her vocal approach - more details in the footnote. Before "End of An Era", there was "From Wishes to Eternity" Wishmaster, Kingslayer, and Fantasmic (p3) are my favourites from that show ("From Wishes to Eternity") - kzbin.info/aero/PLexzLA11Cst1PSoDwmydmmSLm5NQdBVlM Fantasmic (p3) has strong stage presence from Tarja and yes, that is Tuomas jumping off his keyboard to headbang with Tarja :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZmagZyigK1jp8U "From Wishes to Eternity" has Sami Vanska on bass guitar, not Marco Hietala. -Footnote - www.reddit.com/r/nightwish/comments/hbyqhq/best_live_tarja_shows/fvbzbtf/ "Definitely check out From Wishes to Eternity. That recording is particularly noteworthy for being the last quality recording showing the approach Tarja used to take to vocals before she studied at the Karlsruhe conservatory. At the Karlsruhe she was trained in fully traditional classical singing technique, which for a soprano means using head voice most of the time, chest voice occasionally, and a mixed voice pretty much never." "From when Nightwish started to when she entered the Karlsruhe, Tarja used to predominantly sing in mixed voice rather than using head voice almost exclusively. Her older vocal approach has a lot of low down oomph that you can't get singing exclusively in head voice. On the other hand, Tarja has excellent head resonance and you get to hear more of that resonance in her later work."

Great video as always. Tarja stayed with her operatic vocals during the entire song because that's what she does, and that is what you will get in her Nightwish songs. It's primarily Floor that incorporates all kinds of singing techniques in their songs, old and new. People have already pointed out that it is indeed Marco and if you want to specifically hear how it sounds when Tarja and Marco are singing together their version of The Phantom of the Opera would be the place to get that, although it would of course just be getting an arrangement from Tuomas and not an entire composition. As a final note I'll give a suggestion for another band to check out - Ayreon. A Dutch prog metal band/project with a main creator and many guest musicians and singers. All albums are metal operas in the sense that they tell stories where each singer plays one character. I'd suggest doing the official video of The Day That the World Breaks Down, as it has some fun extra things on top of the music. Cheers

Sorry, but Tarja stayed with her operatic voice because it was all she was allowed to do during NW. That's one of the main reason why she wanted to leave. Tarja was wonderful, Floor is amazing, as you know, but Anette, their second singer, was great as well, each of them has their own unique strengths. Tarja was 'the voice of sorrow', Anette was joy, emotion and a certain playfulness, and Floor is the powerhouse. Give something with Anette a try, you might end up liking it! :)

No, that's Marco! This show was 2005, so it's been a minute. But for sure, it looks like the majority have hardly aged at all. #vampirestatus. If you ever react to any songs from the From Wishes to Eternity show, THAT'S where they have their first bassist, Sami Vänskä. I love that you're reacting to Nightwish with the OG, Tarja! It makes me so nostalgic. I own this show on DVD (if that doesnt date me, idk what would), and honestly this makes me want to go back and rewatch it in its entirety. I'm sure you've heard already, but this is a special show as it was the last one with Tarja and they sent the open letter afterwards. My own NW journey began only in 2004, so I only had a year with Tarja, but I do love listening to her solo stuff and honestly I feel like she found herself in her solo career. You should check out her stuff! Her album after the breakup was "My Winter Storm" and the song "I Walk Alone" really made me think about how she came out of the split and how it impacted her personally and professionally. Greatest Show On Eaaaaaaaaarth, I'm literally on pins and needles here! I cannot wait for you to listen to it, and sit with it a little before possibly listening to their new album. Ah, back to the classics. Love it. And yea she does act, as does Floor. I loved Tarja and Marco's chemistry in "Phantom of the Opera" at the "End of an Era" performance, which I think was her farewell concert. You should have a look one of these days. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bofKfX6OeZJ1pbs I would argue that Phantom is as, if not more, Tarja. To me she never really arrived in the rock/metal part, she really shone and enjoyed herself in the operatics, which is what Phantom is the perfect showpiece for ... with Marco and Tuomas' instrumentation still bringing the heavy. (Its the same concert, I was just being an unobservant derp. Golden Mic should have given it away)

WELL SAID about not comparing Tarja and Floor. They’re both spectacular women with their own remarkable skill sets! Man I loooove Wishmaster! It’s so catchy and the guitar solo melody is just so pleasing. It’s so cool that you picked up on the chemistry between Tuomas and Emppu because here’s what you didn’t know when you said that: the two of them are the *original* original members of Nightwish. The two of them and Tarja actually all grew up in the same town! Tuomas and Emppu were starting a band together and when they were looking for a vocalist to sing on their demo, they remembered how Tarja was kind of known around town for her singing. What they didn’t know at the time was that Tarja was in school for classical vocal training, and once they heard the operatic style she’d adopted, the idea of Nightwish was born. As far as other quintessential Tarja songs go, I’m surprised you haven’t reacted to Phantom of the Opera yet! You’ll LOVE Tuomas’ arrangement. It’s adapted just perfectly. And Tarja and Marko playing Christine and the Phantom is just mindblowing!
