Singing in an operatic style is a choice, not a limitation. Tarja knows how to sing in different styles.
@andresweiland3714 Жыл бұрын
Tarja should made a new version of Innocence but changing the main title for "Ignorance". After 25 years of career there's still people thinking she sings like in 2005.
@pete31987 ай бұрын
This is correct. If anybody wants to hear what Tarja sounds like when singing in a less operatic style just listen to "Feel for you" from Century Child or "White night Fantasy" from Once. They are two of the rare songs from theTarja era where she actually sang in a more contemporary style, and her voice sounds absolutely amazing.

Nightwish brought me to Chase! Was watching someone react to Yours is an Empty Hope. There were comments about how fast the reactor noticed that Floor was growling. Then someone said “but no one has noticed as fast as Chase”. And I was like “who is Chase, I better look him up”. And discovered one of KZbin’s best, most humble, most knowledgeable and most enjoyable reactors!! Thanks Chase - don’t ever stop being you!!

I'd be interested to have you react to one of Tarja's original songs, and I'm pretty sure you'd love her cover of Supremacy (there's a live version that's just crazy). The things her voice do on this one... Yeaaaaaah...

So lovely to see you do this one. There’s really precious few who do the Tarja Era. I love it all, but it’s just so nice to get some variety. This era is more than just Tarja. It has a different flavor. I don’t understand why people called her a Diva. On stage, she made way for everyone else, she sang the way Tuomas wanted her to sing. This is an exceptional concert even with all the drama. These are professionals, they give 💯 here as they do everywhere

Listen to the lyrics she is singing....playing violin for the seals, Tuomas did read in a newspaper of a woman in Scotland going down to the shore and playing the violin for the seals that came to listen to her playing, that gave him the idea to this song. This was my favorite track on 'Once' back when it came out. Took my breath away immediately. I love Floor and generally support everything the band does, but Tuomas's songwriting just hit differently for me back in the Tarja days.

I agree. I think this songwriting and composing was much most creative and expressive in the Tarja era, followed by the Anette era, and then finally the Floor era. They still make great music today, but it just doens't feel quite as characterful and passionate as it did up to and including Dark Passion Play.

I love this song so much. This is essential Nightwish, with every member of the band having their moment to shine without overstepping. It's like watching a relay race where every baton-switch is beautifully executed. The Siren's voice lures the sailor and then in the keyboard solo we hear a snake-charmer tune (perhaps alluding to the enchantment) and then Tarja's in-character decision to break-character (the unnerving "yelp" at the end of her second siren call) foreshadows that she is not as alluring as she advertises... And then ultimately the song disappears into the waves which then subside. Marko's delivery of the final line is possibly my favorite line I've heard him sing. It's so haunting. You should also check out Tarja and Marko singing "The Phantom of the Opera" also on the "End of an Era" DVD. That song obviously switches the antagonist/protagonist character dynamic between the two sings. I might be biased, but I consider one of the greatest live performances of all time: a must-see.

Chase, I remember at the end of your last Epica video, you said you hadn't done Nightwish in a while because you wanted to find a way to add value to the Nightwish reaction space. I wanted to say in response (only getting around to it now) that I wish there were more reactions to the early stuff with Tarja because this is where Nightwish started and IMO where symphonic metal as a genre started as well. And it has to be the versions with Tarja, because Floor is unable or unwilling to sing these songs in the operatic style that they were written to go with. So thanks for this. 😊

Chase, my Nightwish and Floor journey only started 6 months or so ago after a work colleague kept pushing me to check them out as I'd never heard of them before so reluctantly I did as metal/symphonic metal wasn't a genre that I thought I would enjoy (the Electric Light Orchestra - E.L.O being my lifelong favourites. Please give them a listen... "Tightrope" is one of many gems) but OMG I was blown away after watching and listening to "Poet and the Pendulum" live with Floor from Wacken 2013. Since then I haven't surfaced from down the rabbit hole busily soaking up everything from the Tarja and Annette eras and now Floor. You Chase have been a big part of my fledgling Nightwish journey having watched and listened to your solo Nightwish reactions and those that you have shared with Julia. Bless you both. You have opened up my ears to music more fully and I now "listen" to "feel" and appreciate music and all the components and nuances like never before during my 55 years here on Earth, and for that I cannot thank you enough. Thank you. Paul 👍😊

That wicked keyboard riff in 11:37 quotes the main riff from the song 'Better Unborn' by the legendary Finnish band Amorphis from their 1996 album Elegy (the lyrics of which are based on a compilation of ancient lyrical poems called Kanteletar published in the mid-to-late 1800s, a sister-publication to the more epically oriented Kalevala compilation). I was so excited to see another Nightwish reaction from you. I discovered the band before I discovered you and have loved them from the first listen. But you gave me a much deeper appreciation for why they capture people's hearts than I would have had just listening on my own. Thank you so much for that. I would love to see you react to two other songs from this concert (OK, all of them, but these two first) - Phantom of the Opera and High Hopes. Phantom is so quintessentially Tarja and Marko, and High Hopes is an absolute masterpiece (David Gilmour linked to it on his social media). Love to hear how Nightwish has affected your life. From the first time I heard them, I've been obsessed. They are magical. Ignore the haters. They have to have something to hate, so I'm sure the very same people are spreading the hate on other channels as well. Too bad they've missed the message from Nightwish - how's the heart.

Lovely to see your expressions listening to this! One thing I like about this performance over the studio version is how Marco is higher in the mix, which means the contrast between Tarja's extra-ethereal performance and his driving, gritty one is even more effective (we know he can do smooth so this is a definite choice). On _Once_ this is followed by Dead Gardens, a heavy guitar-centric song, which I think works well as a contrast (though it's not one of my favourites from the album). I don't have End of an Era, but apparently this was followed by Sleeping Sun, which is a fantastic performance but not so much a contrast (at least in mood, the tempo's different). Hmm, I must watch EoaE in order someday...

This was such a treat to see, man. Back in the day, I was able to watch every new video you put out -- but as you know, eventually the tedium of life interferes, and good things and bad things alike consume your time. Just as you saw difficulties and new joys arise, so did I, and I drifted off to other pastures for a while. But, I suppose the KZbin algorithm knew what's up this time, because in the minimal free time I have, I saw this video pop up, and clicked without hesitation. Chase doing Nightwish again?! No way! (Not that your other reactions are worse, ofc.) I'm just glad to see you're well as circumstances permit, enjoying what the world has brought your way in the interim, no doubt as a result of your hard work, and revisiting an old favorite. Especially the (I think) the electric violin which in this performance Tuomas is playing the part on keyboard. At first I thought Tuomas was a Battlestar fan, however, Once came out a year before season two where Bear really took over the music and I'm thinking he was heavily influences by this piece of music! ❤

And you saw fourth Tarja's outfit in this concert (see Planet Hell, Wishmaster and Nemo for three another) and third microphone color. Two more outfits and one more microphone left ;-)

Hi Chase. Great to see you again my friend. Hope you are doing great! On your way to 75K. Phantom of the Opera preceded this one and it was actually follow up by Sleeping Sun. They kept it mysterious and soft for 2 songs. Then Marko took the lead for "High Hopes". Ignore the haters Chase. We can all see the passion in your soul. It is written on your face. I love you reactions and musical commentary. Unique and special like Nightwish. Peace. Have a Damn Good Day!

Hi Chase awesome to see you back, I have been seeing your journey and you are one of those who made the whole Quarantine time actually kinda great even though I have a new channel but just wanted to remind you that you sure made many people's shitty situation way better by starting this channel and giving your expert view on the music people love. So Thanks and once again good to see you back!

Nightwish gave a lot to me, too. I was working a few hours a week in a specialized pawn shop that had ad-free Pandora Radio. I had a Nightwish channel on there, and they played Lindsey Stirling. That was my first exposure to her and I still listen to her to this day. When my father passed away, I was listening to Nightwish on KZbin and a group called BAND-MAID started being recommended to me. Finding BAND-MAID has opened up a whole new world of music for me as B-M acted as a gateway to a lot of new groups and artists from Japan and beyond, not to mention how it helped me grieve.

Thumbs up for Chase! I know your style will change over time - it's inevitable, it should, growth / change is generally good - but It's just so comfortable, like hanging out with an old friend. And after all the videos of yours I've watched, across bands I adore and bands I frankly despise, even on songs I've heard hundreds of times, you still can make me go, 'Oh yeah, I didn't notice that before.' I appreciate that. Hope life is treating you well, Chase. Hey, that section where Tarja's voice startled. I've heard this song a ton, but never knew that was her singing it, I just assumed it was someone else. I'd compare it to the parts from the soundtrack of the recent DUNE movie.

first two rare gems: 1:Swanheart and 2: Two of tragedy. Then 3: Deep silent complete and of course 4: Come cover me. always have been Tarja's songs.

Such a great non-trivial reaction video. There is a reason you've been one of my favourites since I first stumbled upon your channe a couple of years ago, and that reason is pretty much you and your way of doing what you do. So, keep up the great work, and don't let any 'armies' bully you into following some pre-laden path. Some of us want to explore music with you, not necessarily see you react to all the songs that everybody else has been pushed to react to. And this comes from a Finn. Cheers, Chase.
