The uilleann pipes are pronounced “ill-un” and do indeed mean elbow pipes. They are Irish bagpipes and one of the most difficult instruments to play and maintain because of the number of cane reeds in each set of pipes. The reeds have to be hand made, there is no manufactured brand you can go pick up from the music store. They can vary from one reed in a very basic, stripped down practice set which consists of bellows, bag, and chanter (the chanter is the the bit that produces the melody, held in the hands and fingers covering or uncovering tone holes to produce those melodies), to half sets (4 reeds) to three-quarter sets (4-5 reeds) to full sets (7 reeds). A full set consists of bellows, bag, chanter, drones, and regulators. Drones are the longest pipes you see laying across his lap. They produce a consistent pitch, or droning tone, while air is pumped through the instrument with the elbow. They can be switched off so that they produce no tone. There are usually 3 drones: bass, baritone, tenor. They usually produce the same note just spread over 3 different octaves. Regulators are so fun to watch being played! On a full set of uilleann pipes they are three more pipes that lay across the lap but these you play with your wrist while playing the chanter with your fingers. They do not sound unless you press the valve keys. They produce a sort of rhythmic backing to the melody. They can also be played with the fingers on one hand by shutting off the air flow to the chanter and pressing the valves with the fingers on the other hand. This instrument is famously temperamental, especially in dry climates, and it takes a special kind of person to stick with it and enjoy playing. To really appreciate just how much time and dedication goes into learning this instrument and playing it well you need to watch a master at work! 😊 Troy is a fantastic player, but because this instrument is taken out of its usual traditional element you don’t get to experience its full capabilities.

First time I ever heard Irish pipes being played I remember to this day, St. Patrick 1989 :). My lovely spouse befriended an Irish lady who worked at the same company she did, and both being expats (our entire families actually), we became good friends and often visited and spent time together. And of course, an Irish gettogether isn't complete without food, drink, and music. That particular day there were a few more people present than usual, and since they all more or less played an instrument, and sang beautifully (the Irish are really talented musically), and amongst them was someone who played the pipes. Incredible! Been a fan ever since :). I was a fan already of modernized Gaelic music since 1973 (Alan Stivell anyone?), including Scottish bag pipes, but this was something completely different again! I just love how Nightwish manages to combine all of these different traditions and styles, and creates their own signature. It is just marvelous.

Maybe a bit of Irish argument here. I would pronounce it ill-oon. Suppose it depends on the part of the country you come from. Absolutely love your explanation of how it works, it's a magical instrument and is so emotive

@Musta Laatta, I could see Troy as a chunky centre forward parked in front of the goal. The tough pair of Marko and Floor in defense working in unison to keep the opponent at bay, Kai with his lightning-quick hands as a goalie.

I watched this entire concert last week with my dad (couldn't start the year better) for his first time seeing Nightwish (well second time actually, but that triggered me to show him, cause the time I was at my parents house before, I showed him Ghost Love Score and partly Greatest Show on Earth (he had to take the horses inside during the last part) and he said he liked this, even better than one of his other favorite bands.) He even forgot to take the horses out to the field from the stable this time during the Tampere concert haha. But during this song, he said to me: this is my favorite so far. We actually watched the entire bluray of Vehicle of Spirit in 1 go (apart from the pause to take the horses out to the field), so afterwards I gave it to him :).

So...2 days later...Marko writes this: "This past year forced me to stay home and think. And I found myself very disillusioned about these and a lot of things. I found out that I am in need of that validation. For me to write, sing and play, I need to find some new reasons and inspirations. ”My Walden” so to speak." And you did My Walden....hmmm.

The Wacken Theater here in Southern California. Have not been to that venue, but have been to so many other venues surrounding it. Almost made it to the Wacken for Nightwish, when they were on their Imaginareum tour, but my wife fell ill, and we missed it. Been plenty of making up for later before we had our son, now 11. Looking forward to taking our son to concerts like this since Nightwish was the only way we could get him to go to sleep as an infant with colic. My wife was 4 months pregnant with him when I took her to the Grove in Anaheim for their Imaginarium tour. She said junior was rocking out all night with her and me.

I think I've commented this over at Tank's too. A British musician once told me that classic Scottish bagpipes are instruments for war, you play them standing up, on a battlefield, whereas Uilleann pipes are the pipes for peace times - you can only play them sitting down. I always found that a neat little tidbit and it always stayed with me.

Chase, I have a great Nightwish recommendation for you. Yesterday I was doing something, and I played album Century Child, and the very last song there is my recommendation. You may call it a predecessor to Ghost Love Score. It is 10 minutes long as well, and it´s basically a composition, and many people in the comments to the video I send to you actually compared this to GLS in terms of grandeur and epicness, and I agree, I think "the great 3" may be expanded a bit. The video quality is not the best (2002), but the sound is very good, so you will be able to analyze everything going on. You´re going to love this. It´s called Beauty of the Beast (don´t confuse it with Beauty and the Beast), and here´s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joHdqIyXaLh3ock Enjoy!

Uilleann pipes are such a wonderful instrument! Frequently used by Horner (who is my favourite film composer) on some of his greatest film scores such as Braveheart and Titanic. I was overjoyed when Troy brought them to Nightwish's sound!

You should check out Tuomas and Troy's side band called Auri, featuring Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela on vocals sometime. She also sang on the Scrooge album.

Chase, have you thought about pulling out an actual guitar when demonstrating some of these techniques, rather than just using your air guitar? I think it'd be cool to see you play, even though I am familiar with the techniques myself.

Considering the hair problem: imagine a ginger Tank ;-) Another thing: Floor's "hhahh" at the end is the most elegant, happy hhahh I've ever seen.

When I first recorded the cover of this track, I used a short piece of click track as trigger after the "higher higher" break, until I found Tuomas actually plays his tune 8 times, so convenient to be used as trigger😄🤘🏼🖤

Troy and Toumas described "My Walden" as the musical sequel to "I want my tears back." I think the opening phrase is actually both Welsh AND maybe a bit of Irish/Scottish Gaelic. "Sain fy niwl, Gwynt fy goydwig fwsog, Gwenithfaen, cen fy coed, a'r lleuad, Uwn gway f'adenydd fy dapestri bywyd" "The sound of my mist, The smell of my mossy woods, Granite, the lichen of my trees, and the moon, Yes weaving my wings My tapestry of life"

I did not have time to write a short story so I wrote a novel. It takes SKILL to make something sound/look/feel simple when it is so complex. I know this is a "long" song but it as you said it feels shorter, leaving you wanting more. I love it when a band makes me think I could play the instrument as well as them. Have a damn good day sir.
