Great video of D213 over the scottish highlands i used to know the guy who bought this locomotive from british rail back in 1988 he loved the train and tried to restore it and get her back on the main line but sadly he passed away before his dream came true, Lovley to see D213 back in action and running so well.

Many years back I did the 'Night Aberdonian' sleeper from Aberdeen to Kings Cross. A class 40 hauled us from Aberdeen to Edinburgh, where a Deltic took over. In those days the sleeper coaches were the old Mk1's with small opening windows. I spent almost the whole trip awake listening to the locomotives.

That’s so cool! At 07:11 you can see an Azuma departing behind the train, and I was on that Azuma also making a KZbin video at the exact same time.

The class 40 were considered to be overweight and underpowered in comparison to most later locomotives... However, the class 47 attached to the train isn't there because the class 40 is incapable of hauling the train by itself, it is there simply to provide an ETH supply to the coaches. The Class 40's were never fitted with ETH, only steam heat boilers, if not removed. Many were also vacuum braked only, making them completely useless for hauling the now increasingly common air-braked trains.... Vacuum brakes now exist only on preserved railways... retired driver, long retired...

You are entirely correct. The 47 did lend a hand when the tour had fallen behind schedule (see my shot at Dalnaspidal) but the 40 did a sterling job, especially considering the terrain! According to the Class 40 Appeal, Andania was indeed fitted with air brakes during an overhaul in 1971: aureol.weebly.com/d213.html

They are my favourite diesel locomotive but were pretty useless doing what they were built for on the heavy express trains. We stayed right next to the track at Slochd summit in a caravan late 70's. I was delighted my Father was not, he did not know when we booked it. Anyway every morning a 40 came by around 8am with 18 or 20 coaches on a mail sleeper and motorail train unassisted making around 20mph, you could hear it ages then the caravan began to shake and the huge train came into view I still have a couple of audio recordings of that. Happy memories seeing this video.

I remember scraping the ice off the inside of the windows in the winter , they were bitterly cold and underpowered @@cedarcam

@@tonyhowell9203 We got a few cab rides in them at work, they were always warmed up by then. Must of been like an ice box in there when you went to start them up, they were draughty cabs but I think the other locos we rode in were as well.

Did notice the 47 was also working hard on the incline and providing ETH, did see the driver in the cab at the rear, doesn’t the 40 have multiple Unit fitted ? Superb footage by the way 😊

I was lucky enough to catch it in Cumbernauld Glen, I didn't know about it, I was just out walking the dog. Just behind it was double headed 56's on a tank train. Brilliant footage of the Whistling Highlander!

Some decent shots, thanks. Greenfaulds is just up the road from me, but I didn't recognise the field you were in! Large free station car park there, which is handy.

I was in the field just southwest of the station car park. The platforms were filling up with veg so I opted for a bit more of a landscape shot!

Out of intertest, would a 40 with that load on make it up Slochd going south? I know from experience that an HST with just one power car working could not.
@RoundelRailways10 ай бұрын
I've no idea! I didn't realise Slochd southbound is harder than northbound. Is it steeper?
@jamesalexander38939 ай бұрын
@@RoundelRailways The A9 certainly is!
@richardmaclennan42379 ай бұрын
Yes a 40 would climb to Slochd at around 20mph even with a very heavy train. A single power car HST could do likewise. However, one power car operation was prohibited as it would have been difficult to restart on a 1:70 gradient had the need arisen.
