Kate Drummond @Gotta_Be_K_D
is living proof that it is never too late to follow your dreams. After 12 years as an elementary school teacher, Kate left the classroom and life, as she knew it, behind. She sold all her belongings and possessions, packed up her dog and moved to Toronto to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an actress. In this inspirational talk, Kate shares her journey and the many lessons she has learned as a result of taking her biggest leap of faith. Little did she know that making this change in her life would actually change her life. And There I Was: A Tale About Chasing Dreams & Beginning Again

I am an artist. I always have been. I took those long detours, did what everybody else wanted me to do. The day I started doing what I wanted to do, I lost most of my family and relationships. My kids are still with me they encourage me and they love me. I am 48 years old, and I just finished my first commissioned painting. I also have Progressive blindness. No one, including me, thought I could pick up art again. I will continue painting and drawing until I'm completely blind, and I might even continue after. Thank you KZbin for sending me these encouraging TED Talks.

@@Feminazi1dc To be honest, I don’t know if I would get the same satisfaction painting without being able to enjoy the outcome. I also recently learned that I am autistic. I would still like to create no matter what, and I have taken up jewelry sculpture, To transition to something tactile. I love art and I will always do some form of it. Thank you for your kind words❤️

I'm 56 years old and only recently realised I love writing songs and would love to be a singer-songwriter. I have no idea why it took me this long to realise this. But I've started to put my songs with homemade videos on KZbin on my own channel. I've no idea where this path will lead (if anywhere) but I am being absolutely truthful to myself, and it feels good. I feel a strong kindred spirit with all the people here commenting on this talk.

Amazing - you just described my life. Had a passion at school. Was told I wasn't allowed to follow it. Did other jobs well and enjoyed it, But at age 49 left the company where I was managing director and started following my school passion. I know myself much better now and can really say I am happy. Sometimes I might work 18 hours a day (or more) for 8 to 10 days in a row, but I get back to my home thinking "I didn't work, I had fun". I now have more time for myself and am loving life. Almost took 50 years for me to find myself, but it proves - "It's never too late" Thanks TEDx for the video and Kate Drummond for you talk. Loved it.

I will be showing this clip to some family members who still question why I left a very well paying job and followed my passion. Not that I feel I need to convince them. If they don't understand and don't care how good it has all been for me - then that's their problem, But hopefully they might understand or learn from it. All the best and keep following the passion. Everything happens for a reason and it all works out in the end.

I was just perusing through videos about following your dreams, and I ran across this one. It gave me chills!! I have been teaching for 12 years... I am 35... and I just made the decision, about three weeks ago, to quit my job and follow my dreams!! I want to be a truck driver. It is all I think about, and I've been to school for it already. I decided to stop feeling miserable, and do something about it. You are so right about that feeling in the pit of your stomach. Thank you for your encouraging words, and I wish you well on your journey!!

Wow Kate, I for the 1st time heard someone tell my exact story. After spending my life looking for more money, better title, bigger house, more friends, and acceptance of my Mother still at 50 yrs old. I spent my whole life being a serial relationship person after being thrown out after yrs of abuse at 14 yrs old to be homeless and for 35 yrs afraid that I needed someone to survive, yet so fearful of abandonment and rejection at the same time. Well, I didn't choose as you did, but my past came back on me with a vengeance that tore my life apart due to PTSD and I can say it IS the best thing that ever happened to me!!! It put an instant hold on my life, isolated me for 6 yrs, lost everything and now have an all I can afford 1 bedroom apartment from a 3 bedroom house, and a 12 year old car. The only person I dated for the last almost 4 yrs is me, and sitting with myself at dinner or in a movie and volunteering a lot with this new found time I have. I've learned I'm not a "loner", I'm introverted and I started reading books which I haven't done since dropping out of 7th grade to survive, and I've read well over 100 in a year on sooo many different topics and I am very creative and starting writing ideas for books and even talked to a New York's best selling author personally several times for tips and advice. Im a damn good writer Kate, and I never would've known if I didn't become isolated directly from my past, the worst things I always thought happened to me, ha 've now ended up being the sole cause of my knowing exactly who I am and I'm a caring, empathetic, giving, incredibly strong man with integrity in the biggest sense. Thank you soooo much for this video, you are an incredible woman Kate and I will be sharing this with many people. I hope you actually read these cuz you've touched me and I want my story to do the same for you.

I appreciate what she says. I really do. I chased my dream and it didn't work out well at all. And truthfully I worked it all out as best as I could and I found my dream to in reality be a nightmare. So I had to go back to doing what I did before. And I can tell you the truth.... I REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate the job I was desperate to get away from before. I have an expected paycheck. I don't spend my life trying to make a living. I don't spend my life trying to live out a fantastical dream. My life is ordinary now. And I wouldn't have it differently. The years spent chasing my dream damaged me in ways I can barely put into words. If you are in doubt at all about chasing your dream... don't give up what you have to attempt to make it work. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Take baby steps. Get sound advice. Don't throw caution to the wind. Build slow. Don't be fantastical. Be practical. A dream won't pay a mortgage. It's really hard to be homeless with a dream.

I don't agree with this perspective. You don't even need a mortgage/house, you can live in cheap apartments with roommates. I think some people are just not willing to give up certain things, which to me means they're not "following their dream" but rather something that doesn't exist. Some sort of vision that they believe will make everything right. It's not how it works. Following your dream is not a "solution", but a way of being. The moment you decide on your dream is the moment you start LIVING it rather than following it. It's difficult and there is no end goal where you just go "I did it, that's it"... no, it's a lifelong commitment.

In order to know what to do with your life and be happy, start first to KNOW YOURSELF then things will come to you. To give you an example in my case I didn't know either what to do with my life and one thing that help me was reading books that I find interesting and autobiographies of that other people that had similarities with my life. And I found so many similarities, like they ware describing me and learn many things that they had learn through they hole life in one-two months.

I am ABSOLUTELY at that fork right now. I have decided that I desperately want to go back to school and study marine biology. My undergraduate degree is in graphic design. I work at a restaurant. The thought of getting accepted into a good program, being able to handle the difficult curriculum and afford it seems almost insurmountable. This would be my dream and I don't want fear of failure to control me.
@hadassahyada8656

Ashton Daley >>> fear of failure has controled me!!! I feel it is all too much for me today so I just let go and I did not go to see my advisor eventhough I am the one that arranged for the appointment. I did not go to do three big assignments due. I feel so sick from overwhelmth and swampeness and then the winter started and I feel sick to my stomach from all the things of my current life that I cannot cope with healthly at the moment. I rather stay in the bed!!! I do not want to be seen in buses or on the road or by people I feel like they can all see how much I am such a giver up and not a fighter and wonder why I think I should not fight when they are all out there fighting for their lives! Instead of all that I am here at a relative's place where I stay and everyone went to do what they have to do and here I am in the bed listening to your powerful talk. I am 33 and have nothing to show for it. At least you moved from one thing into another thing but for me no one or I cannot say oh I am abandoning this to go to that. At least for your previous life until age 35 you and others had no doubt that you are capable of something and can make your own living and impact the world for the better. But people in my situation though, what to think and what to do? Feels like it has been 33 years of wasting and playing around with people's resources, time, money, patience and love. Ay! Definetely do not know how to handle myself and how to go from here? Wonder what is my pilot light? This share will sound dark, desperate and sad but there is this one thing: in the 33 years; I got this one thing! This amazing thing; somewhere during the 33 year journey Jesus Christ/Yeshua Hamashiach called me to get personal and also caused me to hear him and to answer yes. I am still a sinner perhaps even all this giving up way of life is sin I do not know but if nothing at all if I never get to where I know how and can adequately care for myself and others and if I never achieve the level of fending for myself and others if I never find satisfaction, pride, respect and peace in myself hence it overflowing from within to the outside so that others may see, feel and know all those things about me; I will continue breathing each new breath I get and I will continue to admire and hold unto that one thing that I do have and that being The Lord Jesus Christ/Yeshua Hamashiach and His giving over his life for me to have eternal life. Everything else I have to work for and may not be successful at it; but my eternal future; a peaceful and happy life in the everlasting future has already been spoken for. It has already been planned for and granted and even the grace to accept that gift was given unto me. So no matter and regardless of how my past days on eart look like, or how my current days on earth are looking, or even what my future days on earth look like it does not end there. There is more and I am thankful. Thank you each one for your posts and the speaker for her talk and life in general for its experience. I wish you well; I wish for you that it will be much better and much more than you imagined. I love you:)

That was awesome Kate!! I'm proud of you for taking that leap!! It's so awesome seeing you in Wynonna Earp!! I hope to see you again in something else. My stepdad was a math teacher. I really respect teachers. And most of them don't get the respect they deserve! Thank you for doing this Ted talk. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours!!

Thank you so much ms. Drummond. Your speech is just what I needed now I feel so energized after listening to you. A few years ago I quit a good paying with benefits trying to build a business from the ground up. In the process I’ve lost every material possessions and some respect but my passion is very much alive now ms Drummond you’re my Energizer Bunny

Thank you. I am on this journey, and yes it is scary, I am not going to give up on me. I like me, a lot! The self validation is not all there yet, but just having someone say that is what I needed to hear. Year over year since this started I have grown in my journey and had my set backs. I am in one now trying to find my way out of it. There are lots of tears but I have found that with every setback is a time to stop and reanalyze that road . Because this is my chosen road now. Thank you Kate for your words of wisdom and strength.

Hey Kate you are amazing and I like your inspirational speech. I think I embark my journey to that unpredictable path because I just left my old life and starting preparation for my new life to achieve my dreams. I have completed my masters 7 years ago and i did many jobs but now I left all that things and start to chasing my dreams just like you. So sometimes I feel that fear what you have felt about taking decision. I hope I'll get success in my new journey.

I started my own business at the age of 52. I should have started one years before, because every employer I had, had completely take me for granted. I was not born to work for someone else. I flourished little by little building up my own little successful business. I am retired now living in my 5 acre forest in the mountains. I still have way too many hobbies and dreams to ever finish, but I do whatever I want every day. That, to me, is success.

Thank you for your video, which is one of the best I have seen ... Even if it is a bit dated, it perfectly illustrates that we can want to change our life even though we have all that society think you are well ... This bifurcation is scary, but your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you, thank you very much for this unsteady stimulation and invitation. Dare to live your dreams, there is nothing more beautiful. Fallen under your spell, I will follow you on tweeter from France ...

Good talk, Ms. Drummond. I took the path less traveled once. I gave me 7 enjoyable years of surviving nicely while doing my passion. When powerful market forces made it impossible to continue earn a living working for myself in the dream business, I took a j-o-b for security. Fortunately I can retire in 2 years with a bit of security and head back to the dream!
