chasing my art dreams didn't go as planned...

2023 was a crazy year for me, to say the least. i finally got the courage to chase my art dreams, and after doing it, i realized i wasn't really being true to myself -- i got caught up in what everyone else was doing
from now on, i'm just going to do things i like doing, and be patient with myself while i figure out what my path is going to be :)

I achieved my dreams as a professional game artist. My god, did I not realize being critiqued every day, my art, my identity, scrutinized and questioned would be so exhausting and stressful. Art on my own is really hard nowadays. We are constantly threatened by the idea of layoffs after our project ends. I’m getting better as an artist, my coworkers are kind, but everything I thought it would be is not what it is. Art as a career can be hard.

It's good that you are continue to draw. For me, as a person who has no creativity (or maybe because I wasn't practice at all), I see drawing as a wonderful way to express yourself. It's really wonderful when seeing a beautiful art.

Thats just how „big dreams“ and „goals“ are. So far, every time i spent years towards a goal, my body gave up for one reason or another and made that goal impossible. Use your youth and just do things. Don‘t waste your time thinking about things, and just do them. Don‘t idealize something and only do that, life has way too much to offer to just do one thing. Eventually, you will find things you love that you never considered. And most importantly, if you are able to, see the world. Thats what i would have said to myself, if i could re-do everything. That thought of doing something people you look upto do to become like them, and then the realisation you are still the same person that doesn't compare. I remember volunteering at cat shelters thinking it would make me the more complete person I would admire in others but at the end I had not changed and I had no free time. @@scottlondon8382 I’m struggling trying to figure out what my dream really is what if that be making music or content creating or both, but when you feel your passion and your dream itching at you to take the leap, why not do it? It’s better to try and chase that dream of yours than not trying and regretting it later, ofc it’s a strong possibility that road will be bumpy but as long as keep trying day by day I feel like you’ll realize there is nothing else you’d rather do even if you fail or it doesn’t go completely as planned at least you can say you tried it’s better to try and fail than not trying at all but what i am trying to say is DO NOT GIVE UP keep taking that leap of faith daily because it all starts with you, I hope that all made sense and I hope i gave you the will to take that leap, I believe in you and you should believe in yourself and in your dream too.

Things never turn out the way you expect. Sometimes they are better, sometimes worse and sometimes just different. I sell at outdoor art festivals. When I was closer to your age I would have thought that was beneath me. But I love it. It takes time to find your thing. Be willing to look in places you think are above or beneath you.

Your channel provides me with so much inspiration. I am currently pursuing textile designing and the reason I chose this field because it merges fine arts and design also, the fact that it incorporates inorganic chemistry, (my fav subject back in high school) . i like how short and sweet this video is and yet it helped me. this whole time when something i would try doesnt go the way i planned or i gradually just lose interest, i’ve simply just blamed it on me being lazy. now i realize that i was doing things because i felt like i had to. i can draw well? then i have to post it on social media or it’s a waste of talent. i like collecting photocards & buying things? then i have to make unboxing videos to get my moneys worth. my dreams were being created because i saw how easy others made it seem to accomplish but at the end of the day, i had enough passion to get started, but not enough to follow through.

I think it’s very mature of you’ve been able to begin moving out of it. As a fellow artist, I’ve felt these heavily and all I will say it did take a while, but I managed to find a more specific route within my art that I feel more balanced with “how much I want things” and how it depends a lot on the different circumstances of the project,so I’ve tried to keep a loose grip on it time to time.

Since I was 18 I decided school wasn’t for me. I spent years teaching myself and building a portfolio. Finally, I ended up with my first design job at 23. Left that job for a more prestigious company and…. left that company after 6 months? It was the first salary job I ever had, full benefits, great place to learn etc. But nothing really chalked up to what I thought it would be I’m 27 now and I’m not even sure all the work I put into this journey is where I want to be. I’m giving it one last shot and going fully freelance and starting my own brand before I consider learning an entirely new career. I feel like the journey for me is gaining clarity on what is “peak life” for me. This video is a nice reminder that I’m not alone and other people are going through similar journeys

this resonated so much with me especially since I've been dreaming about selling at an art market too! I'm still a beginner artist and working up to that goal, but I had the same feeling of "is this it?" when I first opened up my etsy shop. I don't know if I like selling prints and stickers either even though, logically, i'm only just starting out and it's "supposedly" a viable starting point. You've emulated a longing that I've been afraid to do -- going out there in the open and finding, crafting, my dream as I go. It's not my first time starting over (I was initially going into the medical field) and I was scared to do it again. Your type of art seems more illustrated than Fine Art, even if you scaled it up. The market seems to be flooded with this type of art. You may want to look into other styles of art that are less familiar. I totally understand your attraction towards this more animation style. Your generation's minds were flooded with animation and illustration through video games and the social matrix in general. Opening your mind into the entire art world, you may find something you enjoy doing much greater. With art, it is massive hrs of hard work and enjoyment (discovery). We actually make art for the sake of art making, selling art is just a bonus. As you have so quickly learned, attempting to force an early art career won't get you very far. Yet it is a good learning experience. Professional artist live on the outside of our social matrix. They don't work to impress others or themselves.They are only in it for the making of art. I hope you find the art making that you will enjoy for a long time!

I absolutely love this video. Coming from a 22 yr old I am in a constant state of anxiety, fear, and confusion. I pat myself on the back for trying two majors but in the end I am still not 100% sure and I realize that you’re absolutely right. I won’t be sure until I actually try whether that be getting a job or internship. I’ve also been having such conflicts abt if I like something I should like doing it right? After these past couple years I’ve come to the same conclusion as you. Just cuz I like it doesn’t mean I want to do it. It makes me feel a lot better to see that others have felt the same way. I keep waiting and dreaming but I need to do more and experience the world. Don’t let your family, society, etc., control you. Like you said there is no rush, I need to keep remembering that. I hope after I graduate I can do more and get out of my comfort zone. And I wanted to say thank you. I have now fully realized and accepted my dream thanks to you. I will get there with effort and commitment and won’t let myself or others stand in my way. I wish all of us luck and hope we all remember that it’s never too late to try.

Hearing others makes me feel less alone so thank you. I’m realizing that life has ups and downs and you gotta ride the downs sometimes. For now graduating is my goal but thanks to you I realized that I have grown up to be something my younger self never thought I would be and it’s honestly something I wouldn’t have accepted a couple years ago. My end goal is to move to Japan and eventually own my own themed coffee/record store. Passion is a feeling and feelings change. We might be passionate abt X career but then it changes and thats ok. In fact it makes life a bit more exciting (although stressful) to not stay in one place. Life is about experiences and that shouldn’t have to be scary, if only more people were supportive. I believe the only thing that can fill that void is God because he is all we could ever want for & he's eternal. I feel like this about my art and writing. I've always dreamed about writing a book and opening commissions but, until last year, I never started on that. I thought it would be... I don't know, fun all the time? I mean, I'm doing the thing I love the most as a job! I figured out that I absolutely DETEST selling things (money... i'll never understand you) and I'm not the biggest fan of making art that isn't what I want to really draw (though art class made me realize that I CAN do it, it just isn't as enjoyable and sometimes it's even draining). However... I also made new friends from it, including my BBNF (best book nerd friend). I love seeing my characters come to life and showing it online in fanart of my own comics or in my writing, even if it needs a lot of editing and work behind the scenes. To me, that work is not what i expected, but what I needed to see the value in MY art and MY writing. It's been through all my mistakes and errors and even if it wont give me a lot of attention or money, it is valuable to me. And I really value the experience -- I don't want to keep dreaming, I want to go out there and try everything out. Will I really take up art and writing as my job? probably not. I might do something in psychology. Or biology. Something stable. Or maybe not, I never really know until I try it -- but i'll never give up drawing and writing my stories. Oops long rant.. I just rlly resonate with this subject haha

This an awesome video and I can definitely relate. I think we all reached our goal at some point and began to think differently about that dream we have. I've had a few art tables and art show in college, and it felt okay. It resonated with me when you said it's okay to like things but not actually do them. I'm glad I stumbled upon this now. I left my full time job at the beginning of this year in hope of finding a better one. Throughout the past few years I've been developing an interest in another field that is let's say quite different from the one I actually have professional experience in. I now want to pursue this new interest and perhaps make it big on social media platform one day with sponsors and all that however, from working almost non stop for the past 3 weeks I actually kind of miss having a full time job and I am now thinking to resume job hunting for what I already have professional experience in, but also doing this other thing whenever I get the time to do it and slowly build it up instead of just focusing on it 100%

this resonates a lot with me! i left my job at the end of last year, and i think its tough...when i started focusing 100% of my attention on my creative pursuits, i suddenly felt all this pressure to make it scalable / monetizable / figure out what i even like doing, which ended up taking out some of the fun of it and i also missed the stability of a full time job all is to say, i'll be going back to a full time job soon. i think you can't go wrong with either decision though, both comes with different challenges wishing you the best of luck in your journey tho!! you got this :)

Majority of those in life are in the same book in having not a clue about it so don’t worry. Life is filled with failures and hoping that when you reach an end you are content. i thought i wanted to work in the animation industry, and i haven't actually tried it but after doing a bit of own animations i realized that i don't want animation to be even more stressful and with a tight deadline. but all i wanted since i was a kid was to be a 2d animatior but now 2d animation is not even the same as in the 80-90s

There are many roles within 2D animation. The actual animation is only one part of the process. You might find you suit storyboarding, layout, background painting, design or some other aspect more. 2D animation is hard!

i'm supposed to pick between going to uni this year and sacrificing all my time or taking a gap year to do the things i really like. I'm really tired of school dictating my free time. I just want to get a part time job for some funding and try all the things i've wanted to do while i still have time. there's so much pressure from my mum to go to uni and know exactly what i want to do in life. there's an expectation for me to marry and have kids young. is it not fair for me to throw away all my dreams before i ever got the chance to try? I feel so guilty for not wanting to go down the traditional path. but i'm just not built that way and i'm so tired. it was interesting to know how you tried the art market and that you are still ok even though it wasn't everything you thought it would be. Even though it didn't meet expectations, i feel as if there would be a satisfaction in at least trying

hmm i'm not too sure yet! i've always enjoyed making things with my hands more than painting / digital arts, so i think i'll probably explore more crafts (i knit a bit, i wanted to get more into sewing too, and perhaps woodworking? also wanted to get more experimental with creating things from a variety of different materials too!!)

Hello, you may or may not read this but this is my take so far on following my journey. What you have stated so far in the video as well as the caption is absolutely the correct way of going about it if you want the result you are looking for. You got this. You also have to note that even if you look at all the great artists out there whether it be on current social media or any time in history, they've developed their eyes, techniques, and execution to their own tastes usually using visuals that they've collected from other artists that they've aspired to be like in the past. And all of this probably took YEARS. In the mean time, like what you love and love the process of creation rather than result for now. You'll get there :)

Yeah....this is really really tough bc it's very hard to stand out now as the sticker/prints/small shop space is so overly saturated now that no offense, everything looks similar.

in My opinion and very poor experience in this liife and after trying/ pursuing bunch of things, i think if we repeat the same thing over and over or in other word do what we love as a job the glamorous starts to fade away slowly not because we no longer interested but because we're humans we need some rest to recharge, it's just liike playing our favourite song over and over we feel the saame way, so i ended up trying to figure out smth that i enjoy doing to some extent because in the other hand there are a lot of things that we don't enjoy doing.. Anyways just try try you'll feel it at some point that this is it but be aware that the glamorous in not going to be forever so that why humanity created hobbies so that we can do from tiime to tiime and enjoy 🤔 I hope this give you some perspective about it.. hmm that's a really good question. i think i'd feel the same actually, since i didn't enjoy the process of making stickers as much as other hobbies i have! (which unfortunately are a lot less scalable than stickers)

Going to be honest, if you can't develop a unique style that sells well at auctions then you should get use to doing commissions and selling small time merch if you want to be a career artist. Seems like you're still starting off so enjoy your time improving and evolving as you work. Also consider doing 3D modeling. Working and selling assets have pretty good potential.
