I may never be the biggest fan of BO3's campaign, more burned by the fact that we got cliffhangered by the ending of BO2 but watching this has helped me kind of "get it" seven years later. It's not my favorite campaign ever but the story is a lot more meaty and full of intrigue to me now than when I felt like I was playing a campaign that felt contrived and full of itself. I hate to say it, but this campaign was smarter than me.

This is why I love your channel so much. I'm genuinely impressed on how you transitioned from point A to point B. To me the reason why you stand out so much as a video essay channel it's because of the interesting opinions you have. For example, you think a game that is horrible but finished is much much worse than a game that is horrible but unfinished, or how you Believe The quiet Man is the worst game of the decade because of of it not being what the Creator supposedly wanted it to be despite all of the right circumstances in place. I feel likerecently in your career you've been playing much more of a devil's advocate. this video and your video on Wolfenstein Young blood being my greatest examples. I absolutely love it though because despite so many people hating those two games, you give a much deeper understanding and even meaning to those games. you're the reason I bought Wolfenstein youngblood 32 hours into and I don't regret it, it was genuinely a lot of fun. DX, you genuinely inspire me, so much that I've been able to give interesting outlooks on certain things. @@DXFromYT well, to give you my opinion to stir up a conversation. I think fallout 76 is the worst game of all time. You've shown me that a game to be worst game of all time doesn't necessarily mean that has to deal with the quality of the game itself. It can even deal with what's happening behind the scenes just like with the creator of The quiet Man. There was many good circumstances where the right choices could have made The quiet Man good or in the least representative of what the Creator wanted. The reason why I think fallout 76 is the worst game of all time it's because of how it blatantly treats it's audience. fallout 76 will eventually become good but I will still consider it the worst game of all time just because of how disrespectful it was to the loyal fans. I'm willing to believe that without you I wouldn't have been able to think this way. To think in a way where or it doesn't have to be with the direct product itself but with the circumstances behind the scenes.

Even though I was 11 when I first played through this game’s campaign, I still knew there was definitely something more to it. It made too little sense to me to not have some deeper meaning. I loved this campaign, though it was probably better served to some other shooter series. COD players never look this deep into things, and most hated it because of how experimental it was for the series. They just want to play the game where you take down the bad guys and win. It truly was a puzzle to put together.

@@ptrcrispy I would disagree that professional games journalists understand game design well enough to comprehend what a game includes content-wise, and would heavily disagree that professional games journalists are capable of telling whether a game is good or not. But I see your point with the embargoes and with how the way they make money is by keeping up with the games that are new rather than actually analyzing them or discussing them beyond how “juicy” they are. It’s just a shame, because I believe that the state of the games journalism industry is one of the biggest things holding video games back from being considered art by the mainstream
@ptrcrispy

@@daytonmargramarnsom1641 the ways you can review a game vary greatly. Most major journo outlets aren‘t THAT competent at videogames compared to hobbyists or smaller KZbinrs, but I also found a lot of competently made videos that give you a simple rundown of the games features, mechanics, and how well they were implemented, over the years. Their point isn‘t necessarily to know every single corner and the in and outs of a certain game. The bar they have to reach is pretty low so some reviewers mostly succeed in that regard. The videos are usually aimed at a casual audience, so a whole essay isn‘t needed. Also, if a game is good or not is subjective and can be for any reason. Anyone can say if they liked the game they played, and if it was well-made in general.

@@ptrcrispy yeah I get what you’re saying, I get that there is and should be an audience for the type of content professional games journalists produce. I guess it’s just that personal wish that every person who loves an art form has, which is that everyone loved it and cared about it as much as they do. And I disagree that whether a game is good or not is subjective (same thing with like 90% of other art forms). Whether somebody *likes* a game or not is subjective, and it’s okay to like bad games and to dislike good games. “Liking” something is a totally separate thing from whether it’s “good” or “bad.” Some of my favorite games are objectively bad. But there are established “rules” of game design that people train and study for years in order to produce a game that is, objectively, good. Same thing with music, painting, architecture etc. One’s personal interpretation of a piece of art is subjective (and entirely valid), just like everything else in life. But art of all breeds must be viewed from an objective lens first if we desire to keep pushing artistic boundaries

Thank you so much for giving your thoughts of Black Ops 3. I love its Campaign. The story was a psychological trip that made me want to go back, look at its attention to details, read the game's information and events, and understand what made the Campaign so different compared to previous COD games. But I must admit that yours was different from mine mostly because of how the game portrays in Cutscenes and Journal logs. I've always believed that Taylor was trying to revive the Player by performing an Interface to keep them together while they experienced an attack. This was after the Player woke up from a short coma, the end of the Training Simulation of 2054 Zurich, as they saw Kane, Krueger, Taylor, and Hendricks in the hospital as the Player was prepped for limb replacement surgery which is the final phase before they officially become part of WA's Black Cyber Ops. Life happened in reality as the ZSF and Kane are trying to stop the terrorist attack that Hendricks had conducted under the control of Corvus. This was when Kane asked the Player if, "They're still in there?" The Player takes control of Taylor's body temporarily to fight their way to Coalescence Corporation of Zurich as it is the place where the Corvus Project fulfills its true potential. Inside the facility, the Memory Palace, the one you mentioned in your video, begins after the Player shot themselves and experiences Corvus's Frozen Forest. Taylor, who was helping the Player fight Corvus, never gave in to Corvus's and the Frozen Forest's influence after he removed his DNI at the Immersion's Lotus Tower. By the time he came back to the Player, they fought against Corvus's illusions to purge their DNI before Taylor controls his body again and the Player's consciousness disappears. I can also understand that both Corvus and Taylor are the same especially how Corvus's voice was a distorted version of Taylor's. But let's not forget that Corvus was born underneath the Coalescence Corporation of Singapore, SP/Corvus. Its birth creates sentience from the minds of the test subjects, including Jae Xiong. Its birth also caused the suffering and death of 300,000 people who were victims to N6 that was leaked in that same facility. The AI was lay dormant again before it reawakens via the Player's attack during limb surgery. Searching for the Frozen Forest, it uses Taylor's memory to find it and use it as a place for DNI users to rest, despite not having the authority to create such an afterlife, playing God to DNI users, or Tulpa in the Data Vault, only to kill more lives than making things better and easier for these people. What really stood out and made it more interesting is the reference to Alice in Wonderland and the importance of Raven in the story of Lewis Carroll and Black Ops 3. What made me understood was how the game references the song, "White Rabbit" and how it has a connection to Alice in Wonderland in BO3 which to me is fascinating. I've read in the game that the Raven has a lot of symbolisms in the Data Vault, one of the the symbolisms in the Vault that made more sense in BO3's theme was that the Raven represents Life and Death. And I've believed in that meaning this whole time. Another fact about Corvus is that the name is a Genus to a scientific name of a common raven, Corvus corax. Coincidence? Sebastian Krueger was the founder of SP/Corvus, so he must had an interest with Carroll's story and using CIA archives of 1960's (Black Ops 1) as reference for the Black Project. I really enjoyed your analysis as I was able to discover something new to BO3's complicated story writing that made me enjoy more as I look into it again. It may not be your ordinary COD game, but BO3 is a special COD game when it comes to searching for clues and conspiracies in lore and history that made me want to go back and be immersed by its deep writing.

this video feels like such a "last piece of the puzzle" for me after playing through BO3's campaign all this time since the game's launch. after i finished the campaign, figuring there was something more than meets the eye, i went and did my research on the hidden lore behind all of its details, and though i did find it amazing that they went the extra mile to make for such an interesting subversion of the story i never figured out "how" and "why" - what was the logic behind telling a second, backwards story and, really, to what end, so i never really reached into the true meaning of "us being taylor". i also never got any of the references to these works you've mentioned (i guess the parallels to BO1's narrative choices did stick with me though). it's really incredible the research and production that went into this. definitely subbing to see more of your content.

if i got the last five minutes right, while the "unnamed soldier" is going through their interpretation of taylor's memories, taylor himself is also reliving them through the soldier's lens, right? that's why "the player is taylor" parallel is made. was he physically experiencing these, maybe as a sort of DNI hack by corvus?

i think the twist of the characters in taylor's memories being switched out with characters that have cybernetics before they're meant to is hinted by the ww2 sequence, with the player character using their tech in the 1940s. it also may be hinted by the fact that the bosses who were replaced by Taylor's team didn't really use their cybernetics in direct battle with the player. The closest to one of them using their cybernetics is when Hall is interfaced with, and even then, that event didn't really happen.

One thing that I find interesting about the black ops series is that there's always some kind of trigger phrase in the games in some form, whether that's because of brainwashing or trauma. in order and Spoilers. BO1: "Dragovich, Kravchenko, Steiner. they all must die." Reznov's brainwashing towards Mason as the aforementioned trio's attempt to brainwash him don't seem to work. "The Numbers." this one is rather self explanatory and fits with BO1's asthetic, with numbers stations being part of quite a few conspiracy theories or even easter eggs (In Fallout 3 one of the radios you can tune into actually starts saying numbers which are a cypher) and there's always that doubt over what happened to JFK with Dragrovich's retort to Mason at the end of the story and whether or not Alex Mason will ever be free of the Numbers. BO2: "Suffer With Me" Admittedly the weakest in this sense, acting more like Arc Words for Black Ops 2. it's the title of the last 80's mission, it's what Menendez says to a young David Mason and that gets him to remember as Harper just randomly says it before sparring with him. BO3: "Imagine yourself in a Frozen Forest" while the "Train go boom" line has gained the meme notoriety, the frozen forest has a massive significance to the plot, being what the doctor used to calm the test subjects, what the rogue agents are looking for and by the end the player is even using it as a mantra of sorts to keep themselves sane but it's slowly falling apart (if you play this as the Male Player you get to hear Ben Browder going nuts and it's beautiful and not the first time he's played a character slowly losing it) BOCW: "We Have A Job To Do." a more straight forward example back to a BO1 style, here it's what is used to control Bell for the story to keep him on the CIA's side by Adler. funny enough in the Bad/Non Canon ending when sending your team to the wrong location you have the option of calling for reenforcements for the ambush and one of the phrases to trigger the attack is for Bell to say They Have A Job To Do, effectively bookending Bell and Adler's interactions.

The player's mind gets absorbed into Taylor's body after Brave New World, with Corvus attached. Through the replay of Taylor's memories, when Hall, Marretti and Diaz died in the memory, they died in reality, as they were all connected to the same training program with their DNI. The mission Life is happening in reality, with the players consciousness moving Taylor's body. After the event in the Frozen Forrest, the Player purges/reboots his DNI, deleting Corvus and his mind, and giving Taylor back control of his body. Whats your name solider? Taylor.... Most Call of Duty players wouldn't be able to wrap their head around a story like this, Jason Blundell was just trolling the community.

After watching this video and replaying the campaign myself I honestly think the solider doesn't die but lives. The evidence for them surviving is pretty strong IMO. First The phrase "stay with me" is prevalent throughout the entire story. This is obviously something said by someone trying to keep someone else alive. It come up A LOT though the story in one form or another. I think this is someone on the outside saying this Second Hendricks' monologue at the start of the final mission works if you view it as him talking to the solider when you consider he was planning on retiring after the Ciro mission. This would imply that the solider is still alive during the final mission which brings me to point 3 Third The text at the beginning of life says the solider is alive. "An error? What do you mean there’s an error? Can't you see they're still alive?? Can't you see they're still breathing! I don't care what the encryption is! Do it! Do it now!" and "Hey are still with us? I need you to focus on me. Come back to me. You can't do this! Don't shut it down don't you dare shut it down!" Someone from the outside (Likely Taylor) is arguing that the solider is still alive. They're likely only brain-dead from everyone else's point of view while the body itself is still active. Forth If we view the frozen forrest as an inverse as this video suggests meaning the frozen forrest represents death, it makes far more sense in my opinion, considering the only way to get to the frozen forrest is by dying. When people who died but came back they typically claim they saw a "white light" in the end. During the mission life after the solider shoots themselves they see a white light that takes them to the frozen forrest. I think this IS the solider dying to some degree. However Hall says "This isn't the frozen forrest, not really. You're still fighting it" meaning the solider isn't quite dead yet but in something of a limbo state. At the end of the mission as corvus approached and is held back by taylor a white light begins to engulf the solider. This is likely true death, however while the white light ALMOST completely takes over it fails to completely engulf him. I believe the Life mission of resetting the DNI to purge corvus was real and the player's conscious or subconscious entered the DNI to fix the problem and fought off corvus (death) Fifth At the very end of the mission when the solider is asked "what's your name" and they answer "Taylor" the screen cuts to black. I think this is the player waking up since it's a contrast to the white light of death we saw before. If you close your eyes you see black meaning they more or less pulled though and woke up Sixth The song that player the moment the screen cuts of black is "I live". If we are to take the songs of choice to mean something like white rabbits, then the final song of the game being "I live" says a lot

Taylor's journal that takes place after the main events of Taylor's journey of Bo3's campaign confirms that the person we play as in the beginning and the other teammates we had are for sure dead. Plus that's that flash in New World with Taylor being pulled away from our body because of our life support being taken off, most likely due to too much bodily trauma for the DNI transplant to work well, and the fact that people surviving that surgery is slim to begin with.

I sure as shit never expected to see this game be looked at in any other way than it has since it's release. Once something becomes widely known as terrible/great it becomes easy content. The essay format has developed somewhat of a bad reputation as of late due to this and it's completely understandable KZbin is getting more and more heavily saturated with this style of content and most of it is delivered by some dickhead why goes into explaining why something already given universal hate/praise is good/bad. I could go on about all that, but I say all that to illustrate why I appreciate this channel and all the work you've done here. You're at the top of the food chain of the best of essay-style content as far as I'm concerned and you set a good example for other aspiring creators to go by. Fitting it would be you to once again provide a new lens with which we can view something everyone had been in agreement needed no further discussion. I honestly hated this campaign more than anything, because to me Black Ops is Mason & Woods and I was so angry and rageful they didn’t follow up with the story (Black Ops 4 was worse) but, with this video it’s shown me what they were trying to do with the campaign and how profound they were trying to be.

I maintain that this is one of the best campaigns in the franchise. The gameplay alone is so much more varied than the others. There are so many more options to kill the enemies besides playing whack a mole with them behind cover. Also, it’s just cool. It reminds me of a good movie you’d see on the syfy channel or something with better writing.

Amazing vídeo. But i have a question. If the memories are modified. That means that Hendricks never went rogué ? We never killed him? That's the only part i can't understand
@CODMWRplayer
@CODMWRplayer 3 жыл бұрын
That is correct, you don't kill Hendricks because the last mission never happened in the real events. In the last mission "Life", we see Kruger get shot by Hendricks, but in the 2nd misson where you see the player is on the operating table, which is chronologically the last mission, we see Kruger alive. Reason for this is in The Lotus Towers mission where Taylor ripped his DNI out and then gets shot by Hendricks, the real events is that Taylor and Hendricks beat Dylan Stone on top of the tower, thus Stone never completed his mission of finding Kruger. Sorry for overexplanation, just wanted to add a bit of context.

Is there a way to compile the audio logs that Taylor has into a google doc or a file(s) to download? I'd like to go through them and listen to them all in a isolated setting. I don't have a PC so I can't go into the files myself.

I hated bo4. This story doesn't have much of a connection to bo1 and 2 other then name and some references, but I think if this campaign got a prequel, which should have been bo4's story, it could've made a nice transition to the campaign of bo3 to the other games, but instead BO4 scrapped that idea and thought that the problem would be gone if they didn't make one at all. BO4 was the one that made stop playing the franchise, and even though that some of it is stemmed in bo3 (with the multiplayer/zombies), the lack of a traditional campaign made me much more distrustful with the series moving on. I hear that sledgehammer is making another ww2 shooter, but that's been done so many times (even in cod itself) that I'd play World at War or Wolfenstein: New Order 1 million times before I touch it.

I appreciate a campaign going far and beyond in terms of its story telling and hidden meaning, however the game should not have Black Ops slapped onto the title. I understand that Hernandez gets referenced in the game and it has some subtle things from Black Ops, but other than that, it isn’t really related to Black Ops nor does it feel like the kind of story that would be told in something like Black Ops. Black Ops, I feel, does a better job of leading you onto the game’s final twist. I’m not referring to what really happened with Reznov. The game’s final cutscene sets up the open ended idea that Mason may have killed JFK when it cuts to an image where Mason is present at that moment. Even Cold War does a decent job with it’s main twist as well. While not nearly as good as Black Ops 1, it does have a good set up and an interesting payoff when you consider that it’ll affect which of the three endings you pick. I feel like a theoretical alternate history and alternate outcomes help what made those twists work so well and how those two games guided you to the answers and leaving open ended answers. Did Mason truly kill JFK or was it all a massive coincidence? There’s no concrete answer. The major issue with BO3 os that it pretty much relies on references to delve deeper into the game’s meanings past the true twist that your character is dead and the entire game’s a flashback. Call me a fool, but I don’t think something like BO3 tried to do doesn’t really work as well considering that, in my opinion, you have to go through a repetitive campaign to get to that realization. Also, Nightmares, as a mode, feels more like a “Oh, you didn’t get the story, here’s all the answers” thing instead of good additional content considering you have to go through the repetitive campaign for a second time but just slightly different and character interactions that made me think that they were referring to me as a moron.

Neat stuff as ever- the split second text in the ending was always a neat brain worm. How does all this tie in with the massive pile of soundclips and text files unlocked in multiplayer by dark mattering the various character unlocks? iirc all the operators are trapped endlessly in a simulation controlled by one of the characters (initially it's implied it's reaper, but later implied this was probably to wrongfoot you) and there's all these mentions of someone else invading the simulation.

The campaign is interesting but the presentation and execution made it just really confusing. I hate the fact that I already knew you were Taylor because someone else figured it out years ago without going this deep. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpmmeoiCqs-CsKs I think the link between the Matrix and Alice was meant to be analogies for the happenings of the campaign and not how you solve it because of the aforementioned video. Despite that I think adding in these nods without any clear answer in the game itself still made it confusing. Great findings though. This is like red line conspiracy shit and I mean that in the nicest way possible. These are the kind of stories I find interesting but God, they could've done a better job.
