I would recommend Rick Worley's expanded youtube essay "How to watch Star Wars". But you could also read his -online-text version "The Force Awakens vs. The Prequels, or: So this is how personal expression dies, to thunderous applause". Most of the expanded universe's comics and novels isn't worth it, especially since most of it was written without Lucas being invested or onvolved. For example: Boba Fett had an entire backstory novel series prior to attack of the clones. Very different. There are, however, very few books that Lucas was actually involved with and that therefor count. The movie-novelizations, sure. But not only them: Involvement "Darth Plagueis" "Shatterpoint" "Labyrinth of Evil"

While watching this video, I actually completely forgot that Palpatine made Snoke and kept thinking "Yeah, it is really weird how they never explained where Snoke came from." Cool that such a heinously terrible movie could also be so forgettable.

Imagine the story being the Yushaang Vong attacking the galaxy and Luke's new jedi order. Ben solo and Luke's daughter are training, but after Han and Leia's deaths to the Vong, Ben goes to the dark side. Then they unite after inner struggle and defeat the Vong. This would be refreshing since there is a new villain, but keeps the whole balance of the force thing going on and new characters related to the OG's

Yep its really quite pathetic, and tbh this is ultimately what JJ. Abrams was shit-scared of making the Sequels about ANYTHING, i.e. something DIFFERENT. There could have still be lightsabers, space ships and weird looking aliens, and it still would have felt like Star Wars if they just gave us a interesting and "original" story with compelling characters.

@@SAMSARALIVEEEEEE And yet ironically, by them making it ever so "SAFE", and trying to make them for "EVERYONE" i.e. "Mainstream Audiences". They ultimately made most people dislike them. Because fans want to be taken to new places and be immersed in a new and exciting story that expands the Saga. In the end fans went from being underwhelmed to angry and hugely disappointed, to eventually simply not even caring and all the hype and excitement dissipating. Mainstream Audiences are conditioned to like anything that basically has loud noises and action, some violence, sex and comedy. But mainstream audiences do also greatly pick up on something that generates alot of hype, positive feeling and excitement. When they hear on the news or internet that hundreds of fans are flocking to see the latest movie in a franchise, and they're all camping out and stuff; its things like that which attract mainstream audiences to kind of jump on the bandwagon, maybe not necessarily camp out too, but they want to be a part of that hype and huge excitement surrounding that movie. This is why its always important to get the Fans hooked and excited first and foremost, because if the fanbase is excited and really happy, its gonna generate that huge buzz and will draw in the mainstream audience.

My main problem is how it undermines everything from the original movies, just so they can repeat it all again. The Empire didn't fall, just re-branded. The Jedi didn't return. The rebels just carried on being rebels living on forest moons. Han went back to being a smuggler. Even Palpatine didn't die! The original movies and characters now accomplished nothing! Just so a lazy disney could repeat the same story rather than evolve the universe and have to be imaginative and creative.

Steve J The prequels were smart, they decided to make the conflict unique. The Jedi are in power with the republic and the Sith work to take control. Instead of a small rebellion working to fight a massive empire, a clone army fights a droid army across the entire galaxy. In fact, the prequels have the entire war under the influence of Palpatine, playing both sides to grow his power and continue his plans of forming the Galactic Empire.

@Dark Woods I feel this was in part because Kennedy and Co. tried to appease the minority of prequel haters. Think about it, the sentiment largely echoed by these fans were:"We hate the PT and love the OT," for roughly a decade after Revenge Of The Sith was released. And even though I'm a casual who hasn't seen the OT in its entirety, IDK who TF was like:"Yeah Han and Leia should have split up," or "yeah Episode VI should be undone."

1:05:46 It's worth mentioning that Leia had a traumatic moment on Tatooine too: She was taken hostage and used as sex slave by a crime lord who just so happened to be a large slimy slug (not that it would've been any less traumatizing if Jabba were human, but a sex slave for a slug is quite disturbing). And you could mention that the sabers were buried near the same house where Luke found the charred remains of his aunt and uncle. Nothing good ever came out of the Skywalker family when they were on Tatooine, and the writers of the sequels clearly missed all of that. But if you were to talk about every inconsistency with the writing of this trilogy, this video would be another hour or two.
@deathstrike
@deathstrike Жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly argee with you!! Also, Tatooine is where Anakin Skywalker fell even further to the dark side when his mother was tortured and killed by Tusken Raiders. He killed an entire village including women and children. Tatooine was a lawless, crime ridden wasteland of a planet. So when the writers decided to let Rey bury the lightsabers near Luke's adopted family's house, it was a cringe moment because of ALL the terrible things the Skywalkers endured and caused. If this was going to be the case, why didn't Rey just use the force and fly to Dagobah? It has more symbolic meaning and it was where Yoda literally revived the Jedi Order when Luke became his Padawan.
@spongebobfan190
@spongebobfan190 Жыл бұрын
@@deathstrike My blind assumption about the last statement is that the writers wanted Tatooine to have the distinction as the only planet to appear across all trilogies, as it was the most recurring across both the originals and the prequels, with Empire being the only film in which it doesn't make an appearance in, and was only mentioned once by Luke at the end of the film. In fact, correct me if I'm wrong here, but Tatooine was also the only planet that appeared in both trilogies before the Disney buyout, when you exclude the Revenge of the Sith deleted scene where Yoda travels to Dagobah to begin his exile. In short, Tatooine's appearance in The Rise of Skywalker was just the writers lazily forcing it into the trilogy. Lazily because they disregarded the nature of what Tatooine is like you said: a lawless, crime ridden wasteland of a planet, (and they ignored all the bad things that happened to the Skywalkers on that planet, and the harm Anakin caused himself) yet they wanted it in the movie somehow. Even though the trilogy already had two other desert planets that are really no different from Tatooine down to similar geologies. At least Geonosis tried to look different from Tatooine.

Abraham's had a full arch of the trilogy. The problem is when Abraham's schedule was busy with making other films before and while the Last Jedi was being produced and filmed. He gave Rian Johnson a brief description and plot points that needed to be explained and shown in the second film. Rian Johnson didn't like what was given and wanted to make a film that felt like his own instead of a Hamby down and started to write the script before the Force Awakens was ever finished and never even watched the Force Awakens. That's why there are so many incoherent plot holes and loose ties in the Last Jedi that doesn't follow through from The Force Awakens. If Disney would have been more patient and let Abraham's actually direct and write the Second film of the trilogy I think we would of gotten alot better sequel trilogy than we got and fuller and better arch of each character including Ray. The Rise of Skywalker was essentially two films in one. You are seeing what Abraham's had planned all along for the second film and the un expected rewriting of snoke death as well and fill in a gap to try to explain things best he could with limited resources and time.

@@MrJedi-gi1ed Alright what did you want from the Sequel-Trilogy? Fanservice? Or an actually good story? Yeah, i know it's sad that we didn't get all three of them on screen together again. But it's not their trilogy anymore. They've had their time to shine. Han and Leia reunite. Luke and Leia reunite. And those scenes are great. But Han dies in The Force Awakens which is important torwards Kylo's development. And since Luke was gone it was just never possible to have a complete reunion. It also sends the message that not everyone gets to say goodbye. And while that sucks it's part of life. Imagine if Luke came back and they all had a scene together again. Then what would have happened in the other movies? Luke would be back just like that and there would be no satisfying resolution to the problems raised in The Force Awakens. Everything and everyone would be exactly the same as we left th in the Original Trilogy with no character development. A lot of people critizise the sequels attacking small details within the movies without looking at the overall picture. Yeah, I know a reunion would have been amazing. But then the to films in the series would have been f*cked. If you have to manipulate your story that much in order for some fanservice then you fail at storytelling. There was enough time in the Originals for Luke and Leia and Han to shine and they even had individual moments to shine in the sequels but focusing on them too much wouldn't have done anything new or interesting for Star Wars.

@@AE_Sunset-Nutrix_AE Just to be clear, you are actually saying there was no way possible to have the three main characters from the original trilogy in even a single scene together and also have a good story? That is the absurdity you are pushing? Everything you just said was wrong. You keep saying a reunion in the movies would have ruined the story of the movies and that is an extremely flawed argument. The overall story was only arranged in a manner that made a reunion difficult *because* they did not want all three on screen at once. You say that to have those three characters on screen at once would have made for a bad story, even though that has absolutely nothing to do with story telling and the last trilogy is far from a master class on story telling itself. It was an intentional choice to not allow all three on screen at once because they would overshadow the new characters, but they could have just as easily had a story that did not involve Luke in self imposed exile and did not have Han be a deadbeat dad and did not have Leia be rejected from a galactic government that she surely helped to build and also not overshadow the new, terribly written characters and give the old characters a good sendoff. They also could have had a story with anywhere near a believable antagonist, one that did not involve the same exact tropes multiple times, one that did not contradict itself so often not just from movie to movie but from scene to scene, all that stupid crap that is lazy, terrible story telling. There were HUNDREDS of loose threads and nonsensical side plots to nowhere that can be completely cut and not change the still awful story at all! "Palpatine has returned somehow" is literally all that is said about how they pulled this character from the grave, and that is the best that they could think of, the writers themselves could not conceive of any amount of BS to even come close to explaining it so they just shrug and move past it. And you say I fail at story telling lol I am not saying the movies should have been about those three, just that it would have been nice to have the three main characters of the original trilogy on screen one last time. Fan service? Yeah. So what? Who gives a f**K? All movies should be about serving the fans at least to some degree, yes? That's what gets them fans. Why would anyone adore a movie that intentionally makes meta nonsensical story choices purely to intentionally slight the people that want to like it? It is a literal insult to us just because we liked the movies that came before it. That is the epitome of terrible story telling and bad movie making. And they did it for an entire trilogy.

@@AE_Sunset-Nutrix_AE Why should seeing those 3 characters on screen even be thought of as "Fan-service"!?!? Its referred to as "THE SEQUEL TRILOGY", it is a story continuing on from the past. In order for us to embrace and get behind the new characters, it was imperative for us to be given a full understanding of what occurred in the past with the previous main characters. beginning A scene like this could have even been used in place of the Han-Ghost, showing Kylo just standing their, having that fond memory of his mother, father and uncle together, and him remembering kind of redeems him and brings him back to the light. But we didnt even get that!! Even the OT honors the past in that brief scene showing the old gang of heroes from the Prequels, when Luke leans on the tree, looking on at the Force Ghosts of Anakin, Yoda and Obi Wan and its awesome! You feel this togetherness, the past generation and the new heroes of that time. But the Sequels didnt even do this, not once!! Showing our past heroes of the OT era together, it just feels like a complete dissjoint, it feels jarring like alienating even, not seeing them all together in just one scene. The Sequels made so many flaws and mistakes but this is the biggest of all, and its one main reason why i think we'll never be able to look on at the Sequels differently over time. The way inwhich the Sequels were executed has forever alienated and segregated themselves from the other two trilogies and the Saga in general.

54:27 - Obi-Wan Kenobi not healing Qui-Gon Jinn is a small problem about Force healing compared to the far bigger one: The whole reason Anakin turned to the dark side was out of fear that Padme would die - fear that was made all that more extreme due to the death of his mother. These filmmakers had over 300 books and other pieces of media to cherry pick the best bits from. Fans would have wept with joy if they got to see the Thrawn Trilogy, the Yuuzhan Vong, Jacen and Jaina Solo, Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker as benevolent Jedi Masters who ran a school with Kyle Katarn, Darth Caedus and Darth Revan etc. You could have taken any one or two of these ideas and refined it into a hell of a great trilogy. I don't have a problem that Palpatine returned, I think it's fine. The problem comes from how they handled it, barely explained how he returned, didn't explain where he learned it. And Rey is the one to kill Palpatine for good. Dark Empire did this better by having it explained how his power works. DE Palpatine actually was a major threat to the Galaxy by unleashing his forces and causing a full on war. Rey killing him ruins Vader's sacrifice, but in DE Luke finishes Palpatine off with the help of a Jedi Master sacrificing himself to pull Palpatine into the afterlife for good. Thus Vader's sacrifice is still meaningful for DE as it allowed Luke to survive to stop Palpatine.

The Death Star was the culmination of 19 years of Empire supremacy, only becoming fully operational at the last minute. The rehashed Death Star 2 from Return of the Jedi was one of the weaker points of the film, but that concept only got worse for The Force Awakens. And on top of that, while the First Order trumps the Empire's abilities, then Palpatine's army trumps the First Order. When the stakes become so unrealistically unbalanced, it just loses all believability. Trying to do everything bigger and better than the original trilogy removes a lot of the relatable human elements.

The sequels offered nothing new to the universe and made it feel small and everything that was built up in 1-6 was essentially meaningless, Episode 7 essentially ends in the exact same place the galaxy was in new hope, its just the same old lazy repeated story of rebels v empire again and more death stars and Palpatine coming back, boring as hell. I wish we had got to see a new threat and Lukes jedi order and Han and Leias kids, seeing Luke as a dumbledore like figure in the new trilogy, focusing on this time period instead of skipping over all that and just rehashing the original trilogy again with a lone jedi finding a master who exiled himself after the jedi fell again, why I dont consider them canon in because it doesn't evolve the story, it ruins the legacy of everything that came before

Luke in the EU/Legends is too damn OP, he was supposed to become more powerful than any Jedi was before. Initally, Lucas's plans for the ST were to continue from EP6 with Leia rebuilding the New Republic after defeating the Empire, Luke finishes his training to become Grand Master and starts to form his Jedi Academy all while Darth Maul comes back Yes, Darth Maul, Back from EP1. Teamed up with Darth Talon( A Sith Twi'lek from the EU/Legends) alongside a Crime Syndicate for revenge. Grandchildren would be introduced too, but not too many details were specificed. Honestly this is a really basic idea, and Darth Maul's return is the most WTF thing I have ever seen. Of course this should be noted that Lucas thought of this in the very early stages of the TCW(When the movie released and before the series, hence before the canon return of Maul) But still returning a side character and suddenly just placing him so many years later, makes no sense. So honestly the Force Awakens should stay as it is, with EP8 and 9 completely overhauled, maybe with a unified vision this time, and Trevorrow's idea for EP9 is honestly imo amazing. You should check it out, just search "Episode 9 Duels of the Fates" here on YT and you'll see SW KZbinrs going over the script and concept art. But yea, all of your other points, I agree, they massacred Luke so badly here and Rey... what even is her purpose? Finn got more development than Rey herself in EP7

He just did not know how to pace something like this where we had multiple story threads going at once and didn't have the experience to know when an idea wouldn't work before shooting it. Alright. Let me be honest. Having witnessed too many rewrites of the sequel by now by Cardinal West and a few others, I think there's one thing that we can mostly agree on: Anything...Literally...anything with passion, thought, consistency to prior lore, actual choreography. THEY COULDNT SCREW THIS UP IF THEY TRIED. But they did, because fundamentally Lucasfilm couldn't understand what Star Wars was about. Garret in the comments puts it best. Why did they get rid of JJ? Why did they not have AT LEAST A ROADMAP of how this was going to play out? Even the canceled episode 9 sounded LEAGUES better if they would've taken the time to setup everything. I just don't understand what was the directive behind anything here. When you've got Mark Hamil, the man who plays the character, talking to you uncomfortably about his role in the story, and you just waive it off as an old man who knows nothing about your vision? Do you even have a setup for the next movie? You can't even give the NEXT guy working of the series room to finish what you continued. In hindsight, this trilogy was an absolute atrocity to the intelligence of its audience and not only that, but the messages its trying to convey to the audience. Because Star Wars is about family, not a bloodline, or a heritage. But the family we make along the way. Its why KOTOR works. Its why the prequels work to some extent. This trilogy lacked anything that could've made it worth a next generation of SW fans.

That's why TLJ fails. It's pretty clear JJ was setting up that Luke had gone there for a reason. If Luke wanted to go there and die alone, why the fuck would he leave a map to his location? Leaving a map indicated he intended to return one day, or that his friends could find him if they needed him. Plus all we saw of Luke in TFA was simply him turn around and look at Rey with a stern face, clearly not expecting her. There was no set up that he'd be a grumpy old ma who'd gone their to give up and die. It shows that Ryan despite being a good director (Knives Out), clearly doesn't know how to flow off other's work.

TFA was very vague, if I recall correctly. They kinda just said he ran off. It implied he went into hiding/exile and set the stage for what happened in TLJ. "The Mandalorian" is a perfect example of how to tell a unique story that is clearly set in the Star Wars Universe (with nods to the original trilogy not done for "fan service", but to give a sense of the space the story is unfolding in...)..."The Force Awakens" was nothing but JJ's version of, "A New Hope"...but this is what he does (plagiarizes, this time with a huge budget...)...couldn't agree more that they clearly had no real vision for what story they wanted to tell, so it all "looks and sounds" like Star Wars, but has none of the originality or cohesive of the 1st trilogy..."The Last Jedi" did me in- had no interest in seeing the last movie after that dumpster fire...

Weak character developments, missing or irritating plots, refurbishing old Star wars scenes by exaggurating. The Death Star is now a planet, it can destroy 5 planets instead of 1, the list goes on and on. For me Rogue One is probably the only Disney Star Wars Movie, that somehow feels right. I've always considered first six episodes of Star Wars as a biography of Darth Vader. Childhood, beginning of training, adolescence, building a successful career as a Jedi, corruption, ultimate downfall and finally, redemption. The story arch was complete, and they should've left it at that. Spin off stories was a good idea, well, not without flaws in execution, but still a good idea. Basically, next trilogy could be about anything, anything but this. Star Wars universe and lore is so huge, you can point your finger at any time period and find an epic story there, hmm, well, maybe not epic per se, but still, one worth telling and showing. I for one, wouldn't mind for film creators to delve into ancient times before Sith and Jedi, where first prototype lightsabers only began to appear, first fighting styles started to emerge. To see, how it all began.

Honestly, I was SURE, when the first sequel movie came, that Rey was Luke’s daughter. If you think about it, it would fit perfectly. The reason why the lightsaber calls to her, is because she is actually a Skywalker, and it would also explain why she can use the force as well as she does. I always imagined that she managed to use the force that well, because she was actually trained with Luke’s younglings, and when Kylo turned on them, Luke used the force to erase her memories, and she manages to use the force well because it’s kinda subconscious, or because she trained enough for the force to be really in sync with her. This way she would not only have a pretty good backstory, but she wouldnt be a Mar Sue

I also like to point out that Luke recognized flaws of the Jedi long before TLJ. The entire point of prequels was to show how flawed Jedi were and how Luke can build something better. One of the main flaws - ignoring the attachments rule. In prequels, Jedi are forbidden to form attachments. Anakin who has so much baggage, needed someone to talk to, but Jedi told him to ignore it. He decided to go to one person who was willing to understand - Palpatine. Palpatine used this massive flaw to his advantage and turned Anakin. It's especially shown well in Clone Wars. In ROTJ, Luke goes against the advise of his masters and tries to understand Vader. His attachment is what saves the galaxy. Unlike Anakin, Luke had people who listened and understood. This shows that he realizes that his masters failed his father and he now knows what's the right course of action. TLJ acts like Luke learned non of that. He makes the same exact mistake Jedi made in prequels, put pragmatism over their morals and beliefs. This makes no sense because he did the exact opposite with Vader and succeeded. Wouldn't it be a much more powerful story if Luke used the same method with Ben, but it didn't work? Imagine how his world would have been shattered. Sequels could've been a story about how there are no absolutes.

This is exactly why I have embraced the EU so hard in the last year. What you described is exactly what happens. Something JJA will clearly think should only be learned by Rey and not Luke in future stories. Thankfully we will never see that.

How can anyone grow up with a character and yet fail to understand who they are and what they stand for so completely? When Mark Hamill himself tells you he disagrees with every choice you've made for his character and has to explain to you how a Jedi would actually behave, maybe you should go back to the drawing board. The thing about TLJ is that it’s more a JJ film The basis stems from the fact that Rian is required to adhere to the mystery box approach Basically JJ insisted on postponing the story, essentially, to keep the audience engaged. This is why Snoke goes out like so with out a name. He may be officially dead or he may not: nothing is set in stone. This is also why Rey is a “nobody”: we’re saving her official identity for the last installment. Sure it’s an arguably clumsy approach and you can’t be faulted for assuming what the film presented was indeed official. Nevertheless, they had no over arching story whatsoever and, again, the whole point was to write/produce the first two installments in such a way that remains vague on the main plot, essentially saving it all for the third installment. Rey being a Palpatine was the plan: it may be shoehorned but it fits in with the approach because Rey being a “nobody”, that is declared by an unreliable source like Kylo Ren can at least from an angle be “walked back on”. After all, to quote Nerdnonymous, they could have revealed Rey’s surname but they didn’t, they could have showed her parents likeness in the cave but they didn’t and he’ll, they could have had the flashback with Rey’s parents in TLJ, but they didn’t

I think this may be your best video to date. The editing and the way you articulated your points are top notch. You've expressed legitimate storytelling criticism brilliantly, without delving into the political aspect of it. An excellent and wonderful job you've made, DX. As for the sequel films themselves, I think the best way to really approach them IMO is to look at them as optional side material. The general Skywalker story began in 1977 and the final piece of the story came out in 2005 when Revenge of the Sith was released. Everything else is just head canon. You could watch the sequels if you really want to, but you're not missing anything by skipping them entirely. Imagine if George Lucas's original 6 films were a fully completed game, but then out comes a crappy epilogue section that ruins an otherwise great game as DLC. The DLC is the ST in a nutshell. @@joeandrew8752 Except the context being used is flawed because it is from the perspective of a screenwriter and a viewer. Yes, "we" know that the writers can pull a second one out of hyperspace at the drop of a hat, and generate however much resources they need to make whatever scene they want. But in universe, the characters are operating using logic and tactics that the First order is an opposed faction with actual limitations and resources that take time to move and build. Similarly, the film pointed out that once the land base was destroyed the guns would be turned to the fleet, and it was heavily implied they would be fired upon and likely damaged or destroyed before they would even be able to jump to hyperspace, and only didn't because they became distracted by the oncoming bombers. Now these bombers are incredibly ineffective and useless, so trading them successfully for /any/ large ship is a massive win. I mean, literally one TIE fighter destroyed three of them, what would any of these ships accomplished anywhere else, their existance is a waste. Now while it is true, the other ships could destroy what is left of the resistance as well, it is pointed out that the dreadnaught is far deadlier at much longer range compared to the star destroyers, as seen later in the film when the other ships are "too far away" to do effective damage. Both in the short term and longterm, Poe saved what was left of the resistance. Even if you want to make the argument that they could have escaped if he hadn't engaged, their fleet would have been wiped when they were tracked, ultimately resulting in him having made the correct choice. Poe is punished throughout for making the best choices he could in the situations he was given, until he made a stupid decision to accept the death of the Resistance in the end as "character developement".

@@snperman2721 In short, Poe is written to be a reckless strawman who ends up doing more harm than good in the long run, only for the writers to accidently paint him as the most rational character in the movie. It also unintentionally makes Leia look ungrateful for physically attacking him twice, first after he destroyed the Dreadnaught that likely would've killed them all, and later for pulling a mutiny on the (seemingly) traitorous Holdo when the only other option was (seemingly) to patiently wait for death.

@Dread StarZ was it known that all first order ships could track though hyper space. It was only shown that the supremacy, snoke's shop, had that tech. Also as others have pointed out before why didn't the fleet just blow up the resistance fleet first and not the bases that was just abandoned? Like I said, given the context the resistance shouldn't even be an issue really, just evil empires being incompetent it seems.

Thrawn. No need to go for the Vong right away (keep them for later, once your new setting is properly developed). Adjust the Thrawn trilogy to take place 20-30 years after Endor and start from there. An old Grand Admiral comes back from the unknown regions, with a mid-sized but heavily damaged fleet, where he was sent by Palpatine right before Endor to face an unknown threat. His motivations are unknown (did he succeed in his task or is he retreating ?) But he sees the New government as totally unprepared (either to face him, or to face the foes he is retreating from) and decide to take matter into his own hand (either to restore the Empire out of loyalty or to force the new republic to restart the war machine in order to face the unknown threat). As for the force side of things, just assign said grand Admiral an inquisitor or two (who would be no joke anymore seeing that they would have been engaged in battle constantly for the last 25-30 years).

I’m not a story writer by any means, but, when TLJ was announced, I was hoping based on the title that it would have been about Luke being the last Jedi because he recognized the value in and necessity of balancing the force within himself, effectively neutralizing and “killing” both the Jedi and the Sith by removing the divide between them. The plot would come from Luke helping Rey achieve that balance within herself, perhaps through the journey of discovery of who Rey’s parents are, the conflicts she faces and the decisions she makes during this journey, and her learning who she is in the process. Then things would end on a positive note a la New Hope with the two of them working together to train force users in Luke’s new balanced philosophy in support of the new republic.

I disagree with one thing: Poe's choice to take out the Dreadnought doesn't get the bombers killed, the bombers, being an incredibly idiotic design would have died in any engagement at all they attempted to carry out.

Has no-one noticed that the First Order recovered from the destruction of Starkiller Base, and now reigns in exactly the amount of time that it takes for Rey to offer Luke his lightsaber at the end of TFA and for Luke to take it from her at the beginning of TLJ? Perhaps Rey being the granddaughter of a genocidal psychopath explains why she falls in love with a genocidal psychopath!

@You tube "Fascinating how Johnson is such an atrocious writer with his last three films scoring a 93, 91 and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Almost as if internet dwellers are not professional film critics." And? So what if he made 3 films that have scored over 90? Since those 3 films did so well, then TLJ should be good too? I don't know what you're saying and I'm not a professional critic. I'm some guy who's frustrated at how bad TLJ is. "Did you people have a problem with how absurdly lucky Luke was in New Hope when R2 saved them from the trash compactor and how illogical that was?" Yes. Good thing R2 was there. That's some real luck. Oh and that's done to cause tension. Ya know, the thing that makes you concerned for our heroes if they can get out of a predicament? "Or how Luke's plan in return of the Jedi to save Han Solo was a holocaust of idiotic bad decisions? " Yes. Even Yoda was like, "No, Luke" but Luke was like "YES LUKE" it's called being impulsive because God forbid we have a flawless protagonist "Oh right, because narratives are more important than objective facts." I don't know what you just said because I don't care about fancy words such as "narratives" and "objective facts." TLJ is badly written. The story still sucks and you gotta go for 3rd party sources for it to make some sense "At least the Holdo Maneuver had narrative and symbolic weight" Care to explain how it had narrative and symbolic weight when all Holdo did was look at her people die because she couldn't trust Po enough. Ya know, the guy that fights for the Resistance since forever? but nope. Let's not trust this guy and make him look like a raging idiot. "Luke's plan is frivilous and redundant and the New Hope stuff was just plot plot plot" Yup. Plot plot plot. It's like the original trilogy cared a lot about the story huh? "None of it made sense, no person with an IQ above 50 would ever come up with Luke's plan to save Han even when he had a year" no u The whole Disney star wars made no sense at all "the focus of star wars is character drama not plot consistency" Didn't the episode 1 - 6 focused on both though? What are you talking about? 'they only started paying attention in the sequels thanks to the misinformed internet" Nah. A lot of people reacted because the Disney Star Wars trilogy is a mess. Why even call it Star Wars if the characters don't act how they were and made sense in the 6 previous films?

about poe's attack on the dreadnought , i think the idea behind him mentioning it was a fleet killer isnt that it would destroy any fleets of in the future but rather if it had warped along them it would have just picked them off with its long distance cannon right then and there, and getting rid of it meant the chase would have to follow

This is by far the best critique I've ever seen on this trilogy. It is honest, thoughtful and interesting. Each time, you manage to nail down what actually went wrong with the saga, instead of focusing on meaningless plot holes like others who are too focused on Star Wars a universe. When you talk about a plot hole, you don't do it just to say it's a plot hole and therefore bad. You show how this plot hole impacts the stakes of the story and why it damages it. Even I who tend to be rather defensive of the Last Jedi completely agree with your critique. You manage to understand and explain that "desecrating" the character of Luke was not a problem in itself, the problem was what these changes brought to the saga. I'll link to this critique every time I have a debate on the Star Wars sequels. Thank you for this video, it had to be done.

Additionally, I appreciate that you're not trying to say "what" it Star Wars. Some say Star Wars is before all the story of the galaxy, others that it is about family, others that it is about faith, etc. You say that Star Wars is before all a good story, and not a set of tools, which is (in my opinion) the objective truth and the problem that plagues the sequels.

One of my biggest issues with the sequels (and I have a lot of them) is the unoriginal world building. Oh look the Rebe- I mean Resistance is hiding on Yavi- I mean D' Qar. And oh there's Luk- I mean Rey isolated from the galaxy on Tatoo- I mean Jakku. See what I mean? These movies had literally all the money they could possibly need and they decide to have literally 5 grassy/foresty planets (Takodana, D' Qar, Ahch-to, Ajan Kloss, Kef Bir), 2 planets with other great locations but JJ decided to just go with a boring old forest (Starkiller Base, though I prefer to call it Ilum, and Mustafar), and 2 desert planets (Jakku, Passana). One of the reasons I like The Last Jedi more than The Force Awakens is because Rian Johnson gave, in my opinion, the only 2 interesting sequel planets, Cantonica and Crait. Again, all the money in the world and they just gave us places you could find on Earth. I understand the original trilogy had heavy limitations on what it could do but with the prequels George Lucas did everything he could to make his universe interesting and it really payed off.

39:22 So far this is the only point I've disagreed with in your video. Finn wasn't being selfish by wanting to leave. There was no reason for him to stay on a ship he believed was doomed, and he was leaving to go make sure Rey was alright. When Finn was slashed by Kylo and knocked unconscious, the last thing he remembers was Rey limp in the snow. When Rose zaps Finn, the message I got from her is: _"We're all in this together whether you like it or not, and you're going to die on this ship just like the rest of us. No escaping is allowed. You have no free will."_
