Chasing UP 9771 (CNW PAINT C44-9W) Trailing on the UP MWTFW!!!

This was absolutely insane…
I got a tip from a friend on Friday night that UP 9771, one of the final remaining locomotives on the UP roster in C&NW paint, was in Herington trailing on the MHNWT heading to Wichita, most likely enroute to be rebuilt. The next day, on my way home from chasing the Big Boy, I decided to try my hand at catching the unit on the MWTFW. Luckily, they had already started building their train when I arrived, and had even completed the train, so I didn’t have to wait long before they got their warrant and headed south!

Were in Wichita. We seen this unit and got our photos as well right before it left this weekend. My son has never seen one of these units. And was super excited to see it here currently in this day.

And rightfully so! The first time I saw one of these CNW units (which was 6706 a really long time ago) I instantly recognized what it was and was super excited to finally see a CNW. I’ve had the privilege of seeing both 6706 and 9771 twice, as I saw 9771 in Wichita in 2018.

@@BNSFrailfan01 I've been doing some research and was told there is possibly one more running around. UP 9741. There's also that 6706 running around but it's an ac4400cw

Awesome! I saw it about a month ago; sadly, I heard it may not come out of Little Rock in CNW as it may be receiving a repaint. It’s already been there for a week so who knows.

It was dead in tow, got moved to Wabtec this morning. Was definitely a cool sight to see on its final journey.

UP 9741 maybe the very last, I've been looking around now trying to see if it didn't get repainted yet. If so. Then 9771 was for sure the very last one.

The one you’re talking about is probably 6706, 9771 hasn’t even operated since 2019.

UP 6706 was the only UP (EX) CNW but now 9771 is back in service.

@@RAtheGoodRailfanner_888 The Dash 9s aren’t great units due to their age and DC traction motors. They are being rebuilt into a new variant of the AC4400CW, the C44ACM.
