8yrs later and this is still just as amazing as day 1. It's the gold standard. Hearing him say that he got to the river (down the 6.5mi S. Kaibab Trail) in 39-40 minutes, just further shows the insanity of this FKT, and Jim's incredible trail running skill.
@wcomalley

what was the previous record? how long should it take to get down to that river?
@austinado16
@austinado16 2 ай бұрын
@@wcomalley Please be more specific with what you're asking: 1) The previous record for what...an R2 or an R3? Jim holds both, from just this one run. 2) How long does it take to get to the river, from which trail, and which side of the Canyon? Hiking? Backpacking? Normal trail running? Or full send sprinting by an elite like Jim? You can hear Jim say in the video that he went down S. Kaibab Trail, (which is 6.5mi to the entrance to Black Bridge, and 5,000' of elevation drop) and that it took him 39 to 40 minutes. This is so fast, that it's just impossible to fathom. Look at the trail conditions as shown by KZbinr Rubi Hammer, in 4K, and watch my recent run there: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJndaGWNlMaNgck and you'll see how incredible Jim's run is. 3) They mention the previous record at the start of the video, and it was several hours longer than Jim's 2 and change.

Jamil, Jim's achievement is impressive, but it is personal and ephemeral. What you have created here is athletically impressive, in keeping pace with the fastest person ever to run the Grand Canyon, but it is also artistically impressive. As a work of art, rather than being only personal to Jim and you, and rather than being only ephemeral, available to experience just in the moment of its making, in this short film you have created and shared something that is potentially accessible to all and enduring through time. I'm not denigrating athletic achievement in making this comparison. As a life-long athlete, I deeply appreciate this fundamental aspect of what you have presented here. I celebrate the embodied excellence! But I can only do that, in this instance, because of your work of art. Art is the symbolic communication of individual human experience, making the embodied and particular moment universal and available to all. Thank you for doing this, Jamil!

I ran the Grand Canyon years ago, and it was a peak running experience. Looking at the scenery now, I'm stunned at the beauty. Thanks for reminding me of the wonder of the Grand Canyon. A tip for those planning to do the run: Leave at early dawn so that you meet the mule teams going down as you go up. You don't want to be caught by them going your way since you can't pass them.

In 2002, at age 50 I backpacked from the South to the North and back. I was a fit 3:12 marathoner. I stayed one tent-camp night at the ranch then up the 15 miles to the north rim (brutal as this was around August 8). I rested and enjoyed the north rim for 3 days to recover and then ditched some of my weight (the tent, etc.) as I got a room at the ranch lodge near the river. I was still carrying almost 30 pounds (which was 20% of my body weight) I stayed the night and the hiked up to the South Rim lodges the next morning. I took one day to recover and went back home. The notion that someone could run R2R2R and not fall to serious injury or death is beyond me. But seeing is believing. Right after the video stops, where there is the bridge in the near distance, at some point one has to traverse a section that is literally cut into the (is it?) granite (rock wall). Imagine a tunnel drilled through the rock that is I guess 200+ yards long - about 4-5 feet wide and maybe 7' high or less. It is almost straight. HOWEVER, it isn't a complete tunnel as the entire "left" side (east=facing) is open to the chasm. I heard it is a 400 foot drop - almost exactly vertical and absolutely no possibility of surviving. So one is running along a 4'-5' wide "trail" cut into the rock. There are a very few sporadic small bushes just to make it interesting and they are sometimes close to the wall side - moving you to the cliff. There are also those angled logs ON the trail that divert rainwater over the cliff - to minimize erosion over time. Just walking over those is scary. I cannot imagine even slow jogging that section. It is so scary that a man, a dentist who was with his teenager kids (2) warned me at Phantom Ranch as I was heading north that i was at risk of falling there with my back-pack extending above my head a bit. So he purposefully got behind me and grabbed a strap hoping to pull me back from the bring if I happened to trip or the top of my backpack scratched the wall or the "ceiling'. This is truly an amazing feat. Kudos to Mr. Walmsley.
