Hi there. I have a 2020 Topps Opening Day “Diamond Autograph Relics” JD Martinez SSP #’d/15 (odds of pulling it are 1:127,000!!). The card contains actual dirt used during a game at Fenway Park, and it’s autographed; very tough to find. Just listed it on eBay if your dad is interested….

I came across your channel from current to past - I'm watching every video when I can. This negotiation is one of the best I've watched. Both of you knew what value was there, even if he started high, and still came down with negotiating other cards or boxes into the hand. Amazing - from watching current videos to 2 years ago - I love them!

That negotion was rough. He seemed like a really good dude and you handled yourself very well. You guys started really far apart and you had a lot of skin in the game before you even made your first offer. Well done sir, hopefully he'll sell you the "good stuff".
@burleycardboard2 жыл бұрын
Great episode! I have so many observations! The first is that it seemed like one thing that was making negotiations tough was that Joey was having a hard time separating market value from dealer value. You both agreed that the one section of higher end cards had a market value of about $16k. However when you were offering $15k for everything he was saying that you would only be paying for the high end section and getting the rest for free. However, once you remove the percentage from the market value because you’re basically a dealer and need room to make money, you’re paying a lower amount for the higher end cards than the $16k and you’re paying a few grand for the rest. So, I think maybe he realized that in the end and you guys made a good deal for both of you. I really liked how when you realized that you were way apart from each other in price, you broke it up into sections so that you could get on the same page. Once you both walked through each section Joey went from thinking everything had a market value of $50k to closer to $20k. Finally, I disagree that a modern PSA 9 has the same value as a raw. I think the more commonly accepted idea is that PSA 8’s and raw are the same value. I know you showed an example, but I think funky things happen sometimes with sales. I just looked up the same Bobby Witt Jr. card you guys were discussing, and there was a raw and PSA 9 that sold on the same day. The raw sold for around $650 and the 9 sold for around $850. Especially with 2020 Bowman Chrome, I would never pay the same price for a raw as I would a 9. 2020 Bowman Chrome has so many centering issues it’s a tough set. You’re definitely taking a gamble buying raw. I think a lot of people buy raw with the hopes of getting it graded and having it come back a 10, but that’s highly unlikely with the 2020 Bowman Chrome set. Keep up the great work you guys!

The negotiations were my favorite part of this video and you could teach a class using just that part of the video. Very fair on both sides you both left thinking you did well plus when the negotiations started to get heated you both were able to diffuse and sidestep the issue coming back to it later. Both got a good deal and that’s good to see now-a-days I’m the hobby, well done.

I’ve collected my whole life. I can’t even begin to comprehend trying to put a value on a collection like that. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, but at the same time I’m a collector. I only know prices of stuff I collect and I’m looking for all the time. Can’t imagine trying to have a little knowledge on everything out there ….. when the sellers of these massive collections start pricing stuff they don’t understand the massive amount of time and effort it takes the potential buyer to even get 85% of value

Good video to show how proper negotiation should be done, kudos to both parties. There have been many times through the years, where buys have been clouded by the sellers emotional connection to their collection. Sometimes, this will create an unspoken animosity in the seller. Sadly, once that happens it is almost impossible to close a deal. When "price" is attached to the intrinsic emotional value the seller has for their collection. I can respect and understand their emotional connection, but there is no way I can pay added value for such a thing. Thanks for sharing.

The negotiable with Joey was super interesting and really helpful for me to understand. He is a totally good guy. I think it’s a big difference between a seller/ collector/ buyer and someone who is a pure collector. I’m someone who is a pure collector so far and trying to get better at selling some cards at shows and eBay, but it can be hard to sell not just from an emotional attachment but from a point of view of what you think it’s worth because you paid for it, you’ve had it for a long time and you’ve worked a lot to organize and care for them. But from the buyer/ seller side I 100% understand the approach and offer. I really appreciated your descriptions and definition on market value and everything. I think it was a completely fair and good offer and I like how you kept engaging with him for a good deal. It was very helpful seeing his thought process and yours on all of this. I hope you’re able to do another deal with him soon!!

Thanks for watching, and the input! This is one of those collections that we look back on, and we’re so happy we did not pay more than we did, some of these cards are still in our eBay store and have not sold, and as you know, the card prices are dropping like crazy. So you have to think about the future and your inventory if reselling.
@ryanfitzgerald28162 жыл бұрын
I think Joey needs to setup at a decent sized show one weekend with his extra inventory to see how he'd do. Not sure if he'd get close to what he thinks stuff is worth or if he'd be way off. It's hard to know those things until you've really put in major work to sell a lot of stuff in that fashion.

Yes at times it can get uncomfortable but that's just the name of the game, as long as you're still being respectful and reasonable. Watching these negotiations are crazy. Understandable that time to sell is something you need to price into your offer, but time can also be a benefit as much as a detriment. I think with PSA prices coming back down any bulk sale of non graded cards that probably have mostly $1-$5, but include $20-$200 cards sprinkled in is a steal. My bet is you end up making 2-3x on this deal over time.

Great video. Many guys just don’t understand how to sell and what it means to sell out a collection vs listing everything yourself.

Or…that “value” doesn’t mean much until you actually sell the card

Crazy how people will not take into consideration their own time to part some collections out to y'all. 60% of Market value is what any seller should expect when selling in vast bulk amounts. I just sold a fat lot of magic cards for 50% off of the low end market price and was happy with that. If I sold those 380 cards individually I'd have them for months... I'd have a lot more money. But no free time.

No doubt, you are definitely right in that regard. Joey was awesome....glad we could work something out with him!

Your production quality is outstanding. I feel like I am watching professional discovery channel or something. Great job.
