IMO this is the right move for Mazda, regardless of execution. The Chinese are coming, and in 10 to 15 years they will be pumping out cars every bit as good as the market leaders for 10% cheaper - exactly the same as the Japanese did in the 70s/80s, and the Koreans did in the 2000s/2010s. Mazda is a small carmaker. They don't have the economy of scale or the R+D resources like Toyota/Hyundai to take on the Chinese in the mainstream market. If they are going to survive, they need to operate in clearer air, with greater profit per car. If they can make a car that is 95% of the equivalent Audi, BMW or Merc, but for 75% of the price, that's something worth buying. Volkswagen has similarly moved upmarket; people have forgotten now that they used to make *the* economy car of the 20th century.

So long as they don't get an equivalent "Toyota" tax they'll be good

Lol VW downgraded the entire model range after diesel gate. Mat Watson from carwow talked about it over and over again. Cheap nasty hard plastic interior with capacitive touchscreen. They no longer produce flagships like the W12 Phaeton, V10 Touareg or V6 Golf anymore. I would not call it as "moving upmarket". And before you say it's emissions, flagship engines are still equipped in other VAG brands like Bentley, Audi and Lambo. V10, W12, inline 5 and what not.

@@SilverwarhawkI’m talking about their moves in the 70s, and early 2000s. Golf still starts at 40k for a base model, no options. Definitely not mainstream prices

Ngl but they already are. Mazda and kia/hyundai is overpriced for what they are.

Right move 😂😂 just look at the cx 60 sales, until June they only sell 1820 compare that to 11,920 cx 5.. Now compare it to NX 2767 and even RX 1413.. Mazda only save by their single digit cx car. They actually become the old Nissan so many car variations with little difference that cannibalise each other.

In simple terms: Large SUV wth 5 seats - CX60 (6 cylinder petrol or diesel, or 4 cylinder PHEV) Large SUV with 7 seats - CX80 (6 cylinder petrol or diesel, or 4 cylinder PHEV) Larger (wider) SUV with 5 seats - CX70 (more powerful 6 cylinder petrol, or diesel) Larger (wider) SUV with 7 seats - CX90 (more powerful 6 cylinder petrol, or diesel)

Doesn’t the cx-90 have a chassis and suspension identical to the cx-70? So all the issues in the 90 should now be ironed out?

Mazda have handled criticism with the cx60 and cx90 very well they have been fitted with all sorts of upgrades free of charge from dealers and they are great now. The naming scheme is abit dodgy but I think this car will punch above its weight and if your not a brand snob why not buy it over a merc glc, x3, x5 Audi q5? It’s got a I6! Mazda have spent the money where needed apart from the ass of the car it doesn’t look that great but it grows on you good car though well done Mazda

They have resolved it in the CX60. The issue wasn't the engine. It was the transmission which had been sorted (via recall to all Australian delivered vehicles) as well as suspension upgrades 👌🏼

Nice car but crazy marketing strategy. The goal should be customers to easily understand lineup. Having cars which look identical and are pretty much the same except for a third row called different things is silly. It also means that they have to double up on marketing spend and for a Small company like Mazda that will hurt. Differentiate with model trims instead if they really want to highlight the 7. Versus 5c difference.
