Watch cute newborn Cavalier puppies nurse from their mom, as you learn about how to determine who the father of a puppy is, especially when there is more than one sire of the litter.

The puppies are adorable. So happy with mum, having lots of milk. Apple is so beautiful and a very good mum. I've had 5 cavaliers in my life and totally adored them all and still adore the 2 I have now. I have a ruby, with a very rich red coat. Her name is Holly Rose, she's 1 year old and I have a beautiful blenniem who's 14 years old, called Lulu Kate. She's still doing so well for a grand old lady. We recently lost our sweet tri colour, Lily, she was 1 week away from her 15th birthday when she had to be put to sleep. We were blessed to have had her so long. I miss her so very much. I'll see all my girls when it's my turn to go to heaven. Bless all the cavvys of the world. They add a warm sunshine to a sometimes not so nice world. ❤❤❤

We love all the updates on Apple's puppies! Thanks for all the work posting! We have watched all your videos for many years and Apple is our favorite, with Jamba close behind. We knew she would be a special mommy.

Another wonderful video , but a special TY for sharing this experience . I feel like part of this experience because you are so generous to share it . Have your other Cavilers been interested in these puppies . I haven’t seen them. I own a Cavilers 3 year old Bella ,the love in our lives, but before watching and listening to you I really didn’t know anything about them except of course that I fell in love with this breed the first time I met one. Thank you again❤️🐾

Thanks, Charlie (Katie) too. Obviously she plays a huge role in raising the puppies. It’s easy to see they are loved and raised with every advantage. Do you think you’ll choose to breed Apple another time due to her first one being still born? Do you know what causes that very sad loss?

In this case, I believe that the first pup was poorly positioned in the uterus, and he wound up spending about 2 1/2 hours in the birth canal. That alone can cause death, either by suffocation, or (more likely here) poisoning from meconium in the sac.

The puppies are beautiful. Excited to see them grow and see how their markings change, especially the lighter one. I was surprised that Apple's DNA had not been tested prior to breeding. Wouldn't that uncover potential medical issues that could be passed down?
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 Ай бұрын
The DNA screening is for parentage only, and it's required by AKC and our breed club. For the diseases that are most commonly a problem for Cavaliers, especially heart disease, there is no DNA test.

@@chaskat35 thanks for the info. I’m no expert so this will be helpful when I eventually adopt one.

What kind of testing do you use? Is there a specific brand?
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 23 күн бұрын
AKC has a terrific Office of DNA Operations. They sell the collection kit, which I use to swab the cheeks of the dog and send in. They recently upgraded their DNA profiles to include over 200 markers (it was previously just 14), and a comparison of those will determine parentage.

When you breed are you hoping for certain coloring? I assume much like the human world puppies often take after one parent or the other. Apple's coloring is so beautiful. Would it make sense to breed with a similar colored male to increase chances of that color offspring?
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 Ай бұрын
We knew the genetic background on the parents, and there was a 50-50 chance of Blenheims and Tricolors.

I just do not get why you would ever do something like this. One great sire would be enough and I'm not a fan of line breeding. Was the line breeding a mistake? Anyway, looking forward to them developing overtime. I have a beautiful two year-old Cavalier, who is champion bred, and importantly all the genetic testing done for three generations so she will have the best shot of not getting any genetically transmitted diseases. I hope you will talk about how you test the adults before they are bred.

I generally don't use line breeding - probably 95% of my breedings have been outcross breedings (stud no relation to dam). In this case, there were some nice characteristics in Apple's line that have carried through several generations, and the grand sire was still producing. I wanted to see if we could double up on those good characteristics. We used the 2nd sire as a cover, because the grandsire is 9 years old, and his semen is not as potent as it once was. When we breed, both parents are cleared for heart disease, eye diseases, hip dysplasia, and patella luxation.
@janhankins911
@janhankins911 Ай бұрын
I have some questions (so what else is new?). Did you use artificial insemination? Why two sires? Does that increase the chance of pregnancy? I know multiple sires are common in cats (usually unspayed cats that are feral or are allowed to roam at large), but I've never heard of it in dogs before, especially in a planned litter. Not being judgy, just curious (or perhaps, nosy).
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 Ай бұрын
We wanted to breed back to her ancestor, but he is 9 years old, and we wanted to maximize the size of the litter by covering with a second, younger sire. The older sire was bred to her using side-by-side AI on 2 consecutive days, and the next day she had a trans-cervical insemination using shipped semen from the other.

Well that’s very interesting to do that form of Breeding , it actually makes sense as you may get rid of the defects of mitral valve disease in them ?🤔 that would be brilliant ,wouldn’t it ? Of course maybe it will and then no more suffering on both ends, with the cavaliers enduring that and us Humans as well ❤️🙏🫶🤗🐶😇👍🏻

Yes - our hope is that, in addition to doubling up on the structure, type, and temperament qualities that are in the line, we will also double up on the good health they have.
