Hi guys, welcome to a film by antiquesarena, in this film we have a chat about charity shops and buying from them. I always felt bad when I bought from a charity shop for re-sale, I used to think I shouldn’t be making money off them, and some charity shops get quite nasty when they know you’re a dealer, however after years of trading I now know that most charity shops are happy to have dealers come and buy as it gives them a chance to sell thing they wouldn’t necessarily be able to sell to the public, in adition most charity shops have their own dealer / expert telling them whats a fair price to get the item sold, anyway in this film we have a chat, a look at should you feel guilty when you buy from charity shops so I hope you enjoy.
My business is small and simple, I buy from charity shops, car boot sales thrift stores etc to sell in my shop and on eBay, amazon, facebook and other platforms, and make films that I hope you enjoy , please feel free to comment and give your opinion and experiences. its a little look at buying and selling what to buy and sell . My name is Antiquesarena and i have a pawn / antique shop but have sold for many years at car boot sales, antique fairs, auction houses, i buy and sell antiques and collectables and show you my finds every week, in this chat i talk about the different ways to sell to maximise your profit. do you hold out for the most money you can get from your antiques and collectables or do you take less money and deal in volume. Should you Specialise or be a general dealer. here are my top tips to help you understand how much to sell for to have the best results and most profit. This advice will work no matter if you sell on ebay, Amazon, Etsy, facebook or any other platform, hope this advice is both useful and helps you make loads of money. if you would like to see more films on my antique finds, advice on how to sell or buy and book reviews please visit my channel for hundreds of films.

Great topic Walter! I have felt guilty only one time at a benefit sale for a family that had a sick child and they were trying to cover medical expenses. I bought a large crock for 20 dollars that I suspected was worth a lot, and ended up selling it for over 400 dollars. In this case, I did go back and give them half of what I made. I felt it was fair and the right thing to do. I was happy with the deal and they were thrilled. It worked out for both of us.

Hi Starwarsfanboy501 . firstly that was a really wonderful thing you done there, not many people would have bothered going back and you didnt do it because you was forced, but a good cause like that isnt the same as a charity shop, that is a business same as us and at a boot sale they set the price we pay.

Well said Walter - I always think to myself if I don't buy the item can guarantee somebody else will. At the end of the day it is the seller who is responsible for setting the price.

Hi Chelsal, Thank you for your comment, i agree with you totally, i do try to pay a full asking price if i can tbh, unless its trade then i will ask for trade price.

I have been subscribed for a few weeks, and this is the best antique channel I've seen. Slice of fried gold. Invaluable knowledge, and thoroughly enjoyable. You are an honest, down to earth person. No matter the topic, I watch every vid all the way through. I am working my way through the vids trying to like each one, but thought you could know beforehand. The shop is breathtaking, truly a work of art and a gem of the community. The welsh countryside, the carboots, the antiques, the family life, all wonderful. More to say, but in short thank you so much for the effort you have undergone for the channel. Always tuned in and learning here in the U.S.

A difficult subject covered well, Walter. My approach would be that you should never feel guilty about providing for your family. You are also providing a service to your local community - sourcing interesting items for them to purchase at reasonable prices and allowing them to turn unwanted items into cash. You should definitely feel proud, not guilty.

Well said Walter one should not feel guilty if they pay the price asked by the seller. Personally I have educated lots of first time sellers at car boot sales to ask more than they think something is worth, you can always come down in price you can't go up that is the buyers job if someone wants an item they will come back at you with an offer or walk away it's all part of the dealing process give and take from both sides. Keep up the informative vlogs, untill next time Happy trading, Colin.

I used to feel guilty when I bought from charity shops but I don't now. I buy large auction lots and anything below my minimal selling price or worth a couple of pounds goes to the charity shop. Some charity shops send you how much they have raised from your items and in a year I donated items worth hundreds. So I say what goes round comes round

Hi Linda, thank you very much for your comment, i totally agree with you, dont know why people would think they can say what you can do with it once they sell it, but even now i still wont buy from the charity shop next to me as i dont want to offend them.

Don't worry about the negative comments, some people are just envious. They have no knowledge about the items and if they sell them too cheaply that's their fault. Many people don't like if somebody is successful.

No guilt whatsoever. I will pay the price that an individual, charity or other organisation is asking for an item and, if I sell it at a good profit, it's nothing to do with them. In the same way it's nothing to do with them if I ever made a fiscal loss. Anyone who complains on grounds of morals perhaps need to be reminded about what 'business' actually means. I'm sure some people relish in attaining the higher moral ground. Problem is, they achieve such a great altitude that the Oxygen is obviously very thin!

One of my pet peeves is when a car boot seller raises the price of an item if they think your a dealer! Some regular sellers do this so I avoid them... their loss!
@AntiquesArena
@AntiquesArena 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Anna, Thank you for your comment, i agree with you that is frustrating, and what they dont know 75 percent of car booters all resell it on even the ones who look like public.

Good explanation. Some people just don't know how much work is put into reselling. If I go to a sale and the seller starts quoting eBay prices I leave. They do not understand the risk, the work involved to list, and the amount of money you have in inventory as you wait for a sale. People sell what they do not want for the cash in hand. Or they sell regularly and know how to discount, again, for cash in hand.

Hi Aunt Zif. Thank you for your comment, this job is rewarding but very hard and full of risk. i hate when people quote ebay also i say go sell then and walk away too. its also not fair business sellers pay more to use ebay and public.

I know what you mean, I would go to charity shops and when buying something I get asked is it for yourself? Or something similar, I always want to ask them why is it your name over the shop or is my money different from someone elses money? Gets annoying when people judge.

No guilt. My boot sales have dealers, house clearers and people desperately wanting to get rid for money or de-cluttering. I sell depending on what it cost me or what it's worth to me. If I have had it in my house for two years and I haven't used it it has a low use value. If I got it cheap or free I will sell it cheap because other people a long the chain can make money on that item. It's a win win. Charity shops get it for free. So anyway they win. We recycling people or dealers are making an Honest living. No guilt I

As bootfairs are mainly summertime do you have any other suggestions besides charity shops for finding stock in wintertime? I don’t know enough to feel confident to go to antiques fairs / auctions etc yet. Have you tried facebay market place? Or is it too hard to tell quality from a mere photo? Curious. Thanks in advance x Jane
@AntiquesArena
@AntiquesArena 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Hun, tbh when the car boot sales thin out in winter time, i try and find under shelter ones as there will always be car boot sales on even in the winter, but if i am short of stock i go on charity shop runs, you can pull some nice bits out as cheap as car boot sales, dont be afraid of auctions they are not that scary, if your worried stick to misc boxes that are cheap with no risk or stick to what you know and set a price and stick to it. i can tell off pics if something is quality or not but i havnt tried facebay tbh.

Great topic! I have bought items on eBay and relisted them to sell usually with correct descriptions, cleaned and polished, improved photographs, in the correct category ect.. and received abusive messages from the seller. These are the same people that go to high street coffee chains and pay £4 for a large coffee that has a 99% margin while looking at their new £600 iPhone made in China for a fraction. One thing you didn't mention in this video was the items you may have sold that could have been worth a lot more. Ignorance is bliss. What is the channel of lady you talked about?
@AntiquesArena
@AntiquesArena 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bigcreator, thank you very much for your comment, i know what your saying, i tend to hold stuff for a little bit before moving it on. but once you buy an item dont know what would give people the idea they can have control over what you do with it. i agree i have made mistakes myself and sold stuff too cheap, and taken many losses but no one gets pissed over that lol.

Not me, I give people what they want, still at a fair price.. I think if I knew I could get loads for something, i'd be decent and up the money I give them a bit. But i'm the one who's out early, sourcing all the lovely goods. He who dares, wins and there's a lot of busy people, with money to buy, who don't mind paying extra, for something they want. That's if they even realise, i'm charging more. I never assume that everyone is on the same financial level, than myself. There are a lot of busy people with money to spend and buying from ebay, makes life simpler for them.
