The Kardoen is beautiful, and the blue Geranium loves the place. To get a Beech that majestic and big it takes a century or more. As it loves no shade on its trunk cutting it back drastically isn't wise. I am glad you asked for a tree surgeon. He knows what he is doing.

I came in part way through the post. At first I thought you three were cutting the tree by yourselves! 😱Thank goodness for James. As you all are clearly aware and suggest, it's part of your responsibility as a property owner to take care of your trees. It's so good to see that you take it seriously and that you're doing this before the planting starts. All three of you always think of most everything before a job starts, that's one of the reasons I love watching your channel. It really gives some respect for the job to try to hold part of the tree up by ropes doesn't it? Another wonderful post. Thank you for sharing!!

Our 1898 house is 4 stories, basement to attic with trees overhanging the roof. Trees are owned by the neighbors, good friends of ours, who keep them trimmed. They cause a lot of issues, like plugging our gutters then sprouting in them. Our roof is only a couple years old. We just paid it off & don’t want more damage. It’s the water pouring over blocked gutters causing us the most trouble. It’s a very good thing to keep up on them. And YES all that hardwood will be free heat! Use all the assets you have on your land!

Glad to hear that the overhanging tree on Paula's cottage has also been cut back - can we see pictures. Trees too near to buildings can cause damage to both top (roof) and bottom (footings). Advice from UK Insurance companies is leave AT LEAST 6 metres between house and planting and more if it is a known large species such as chestnut, sycamore etc.

The tree look beautiful. You are creating a wonderful backdrop to complete all your hard work. When it comes to the flowers, shrubs etc, if you like roses but perhaps you do not want too much yearly ongoing work, I have found the Rugosa Roses to be a very good choice. It is quite a large family of roses actually… some of the rugosas are single flowers, some double. I love the dark red, double flowered ‘Rugosa Roseraie de la Haye’ the scent is wonderful too. An excellent single rose in the same family is Blanc double de Courbet… I fantastic white rose, also heavily scented. The Rugosa Roses grow quite large. They can be chopped around or just left to grow large. Probably the best way is just to leave them to their own devices and just to cut out any dead. If you try them, I think you might enjoy them very much… I certainly love them all ! Mike.

It is good to know someone who is an arborist. We had to remove an Apple and the remainder of a Manitoba Maple tree this fall. The Apple tree was loaded with apples but the apples began dropping early, then we saw the branches were dying one at a time from blight. The Maple we knew needed to come down. Some trees do die back and become dangerous, others do not have very long life spans, then you have others that live for hundreds of years. It takes a lot of interest to grow a channel, you have done very well. It is a shame that Lesa and Ted have to sell Chateau de Montmagner. They have done an amazing job on a tiny budget, but their channel did not take off in the 4 yrs they have worked on the Chateau, as yours has done. Ronnie in Saskatchewan

Isn't it great how easily the weeds pull from the wood chips areas? I can speak from some experience - the thicker the chip layer, the fewer the weeds each year and the easier to pull out the few that get started. We've renewed our chips every 2 years - always untreated of course - and now after the third layer, we can clearly start going a bit longer between applications of new chips. Good luck!

Hi Terry, at 12:15 there is a sapling behind the cut branches beside the chestnut; if it is a eucalyptus tree be careful that it is not what we call 😮here in Australia a mankiller. For obvious reasons they look great but can drop an entire branch that looks healthy . Thank for doing what you do ,the whole family and friends are a joy. 🦘🐨❤️D.D.

Aussie here, we knew them by the slang term of “widow maker”. We had them in our garden too. One of our eucalypt trees dropped a huge branch (almost half the tree) straight down. It took out the top of our fence, the neighbours above ground pool, clothesline, outdoor dining setting and garden shed. Our neighbour called in his firemen mates and all was cleaned up before we got home from work. Our neighbour’s insurance covered everything as the damage was done to their property. They were really happy as they got all brand new replacements. Their previous above ground pool was second hand one so they were thrilled. We had all our other trees assessed ongoingly and then we had the arborist maintain them and take down any that were in decline.

You should paint the bear stump wood endings, where the limbs were cut off. It prevents insects and tree rot from setting into the wood stump ending. Speaking of trees, Christmas is on the way. I just had to make a comment about something I learned today. There is a castle or really large house in Dorset called Mapperton House. They have a channel and I've been watching so I could learn about the Earl of Sandwich whose house Mapperton is. Anyway you can stay there for a few days if you choose and they have pictures of the guest bedrooms on their site, just follow links. The ceiling in one of the bedrooms is unbelievable. I can't explain it, I'm just begging you to go and look at it as it's magnificent. When I saw it I immediately thought of you all and the fact that you are redoing suites. If you have questions, please ask. I can't wait to see what you think. Thanks!
