A lot of question on time limits. I will provide the statement from OpenAI. They have not been clear about limits. I believe it’s because they want to dynamically adjust based on capacity. Here is what they say: “Your daily use of advanced voice for Plus and Team users is subject to a limit each day, and daily limits may change. We provide a notice as you are approaching the daily limit. Plus and Team users will be notified when they have 15 minutes left of advanced voice for the day. Free users have access to a monthly preview to try advanced voice.”

As a lifelong homeschooler, I'm beyond excited at some of the things I can do with this. One of my new favourites is looking at old maps of the world (1500s era) and asking about different cultures, and poetry from different countries, and individual stories each, and what other people those individuals met - and then what their life story was. It's exploring history based purely on my interest from each thread.

I’m an English teacher. I’m not afraid of ChatGPT; in fact I enthusiastically recommend it to my English students. I see it as another tool in my arsenal. It does mean ETs will have to adapt as ChatGPT can do a lot of the grunt work in language learning. But there’s still plenty it can’t do.

I'm a English student and I assure you, when I go to classes I look for more than just a grammar or vocabulary lessons, much times I search the ways to learn English more easily and improve my level in the shortest time posible. When they can do this, we will all be concerned. And even if they can, it will never have the feeling you get when you go a class in person with your teacher. No one knows what will happen NOT EVEN OpenAI

As long as you organize your own learning, it seems to be working fine. I expect, many learners would like teachers to prepare a full course and manage the learning, activities and so on rather than doing all those things on their own. I hope in this sense, teachers will keep their value, hahaha.

...except that you can have GPT do that for you as well, quite easily. It wouldn't even break a sweat. And if you were going to come back and say that it wouldn't be a good course, I highly recommend that you do some research before you bark up that tree.

@ficklefox2171 I experimented with creating different courses, I tried to teach myself fitness using gpt. It is kind of fine, but I feel it doesn't reach the level of a good course on udemy, for example. I use gpt for the syllabus and other things related to planning. It works great. But when I want to revive my Spansish speaking skills, I will create a program myself (using gpt) and just give instructions to gpt to follow them. So, it's like, I use gpt to do everything, yet I manage all requests and small details.

Its not all there yet, but your video does a great job of showing what is possible today. You correctly identify that the real breakthrough is that it is now longer speect-to-text to speech. It's infinitely amazing to see an LLM to teach English pronunciation. This feature has never been possible before. OpenAI has put tremendous effort to make it possible. I believe this ChatGPT advanced voice mode has the potential to help language learners master pronunciation. However, I feel a lit a bit worried about whether it will make the role and business of language teachers, especially English language teachers, less important or obsolete over time. I'm preparing for the IELTS exam with a view to become an English teacher and an IELTS trainer one day. Can anybody provide some advice on my concern? Do English teachers now need to find another way to make a living?

There was an early version on 4o where on voice mode it would type what I said and what GPT said as we each talked. I'm learning German and it was SO USEFUL to read what it said (for learning) and what I said (for proof and learning the spelling). It all of sudden stopped working. Now 4o is half as useful for language learning. This would be so easy to turn back on, as one you hit the "x" it's there. Just not while you are in mode. Any ideas here?

Still aways to go. There are too many limitations to say THIS will change English Learning Forever. Advanced Voice Mode is only available to Plus and Team users so if it's not on the free tier, many students will not have access (OpenAI's pricing is too prohibitive for many). It's very powerful but limited use right now. There's also a time limit to how long you can use it (many are reporting only being able to use it for 30-40 minutes before it switches to the older mode). Advanced Voice Mode will not work with Custom GPTs so the Custom GPTs I previously made for my students are useless as there's no voice component at all. Currently, there are a LOT of bugs but even with the bugs, it's obvious that there's a lot of promise. This is not yet the inflection point for the bright future ahead but it's obviously getting there.

I believe in 2-3 years when more powerful GPUs are available and highly powerful models are rolled out, the model shown in the video will become old and cheap. Who knows, openAI might make it open source and can be run locally(unlikely tho).

I think the type of teaching that is easily replaced by ChatGPT is the one-to-one tutor role. Large lessons have a social component that is important and not easy to replace.
