So I thought about this one a bit. It actually makes a lot of sense how Pestilence lost to Goblins. Basically Goblins is just a burn deck. And Pestilence also burns the Pestilence player. So the Pestilence player is basically just helping the Goblins player. I think that matchup is highly dependent on who is on the play.

Carl's misplay- if you want to call it a misplay, is an interesting lesson in that making the "safe" choice- manamorphose into double chatterstorm, isn't always the correct play. sometimes you gotta pray for topdeck lethal and go for it when you're facing down an opponent who is also popping off.
@finnpeterson43358 ай бұрын
Yeah, it is such a fascinating example of playing to win vs playing to stay alive. In this scenario, making two green is on average what keeps Carl alive for the longest amount of time, but that is almost a guaranteed loss for the storm deck playing against elves that are popping off. But making red is playing to win, playing to draw another mana producing spell off the top of his deck, and in my opinion, has a far higher chance of victory than just casting two chatterstorms.

People forget about the alternate mode for Learn, which can often be very relevant in chatterstorm. You can opt to loot instead of pulling in a lesson. I don't think it would've mattered, but that would've been the line I'd go for in the second game. Make the red mana, plan to loot away the chatterstorm in hand and see what you get. Of course with hindsight red mana was definitely the right play.
@alexkuzela92668 ай бұрын
Learn doesn't loot, it rummages. That's probably why he didn't go for that line.

That is why the mechanic is 11 on the storm scale, not because the mechanic is too complicated, but because it is impossible to explain without taking up an entire cards worth of text, and it isn't impactful enough to justify that design cost.

Reworking it to actually work like it sounds like it should i.e. "bands with X" means that it can band with X instead of things that have the same "bands with X" ability, as well as changing damage assignment to be closer to the way it worked originally at least makes it a lot easier to explain either "bands with X" or "banding". The original rules for "bands with X" was written the way it was because of the funky way the Legend creature type worked everything and the extremely narrow number of cards/variants that used it. The only varients were "bands with legends" and tokens with "bands with Wolves of the Hunt", so it mechanically didn't make a difference and avoided the complexities writing it in a way that could work with a pseudo-creature type Legend and/or with a token's name. I think the biggest issue now is that "banding" is most useful as a defensive ability which tends to especially bog down environments like limited; so it's a bad mechanic to include on a lot of cards in a set. Maybe we could get a few cards at rare or mythic in a set though, but then that feels like complicating a set just for nostalgia.

I just got unlucky with my Galvanic relays and thoralf drew the absolute nuts with the Elf deck :P
@dashkatae8 ай бұрын
@@CardmarketMagic How? You have 5 mana after casting Cabal Ritual, you use two to play night's whisper, drawing two cards, putting you at three black mana. You drew into rite of flame and manamorphose, you play the chromatic star, for one black, now you have two black left. Use the star, make a red, draw another card, now you can cast rite of flame. With two other rite of flames in your graveyard you add 4 red. Now you're back at four red and one black mana, a card deeper than you were, then you can cast manamorphose for another card, and even if you couldn't win right then and there, you could cast the two chatterstorms and put even more squirrels out than what you got.
