I feel like you should correct 00:08 legacy CAN be fast, but a control mirror for example can be painfully long to play. The image of legacy is that its super fast, expensive and skill intense, thats true except for the speed. Imo that cliche is a bit harmful. In reality most matchups go for longer than just one or two turns :)

@zetekpl2 ай бұрын
@@philipyoutube8720 If you gamble for karakas right away (there is 1 in deck) you have 1/5 chance of discarding it and insta losing. If you tutor crop rotation you have 1/5 chance of discarding the tutored target, but you still have second gamble in hand. So even when that 1 in 5 situation happens you tutor for karakas and have 3 in 4 chance of not discarding it. So you have higher odds of not losing when choosing the line of tutor for crop rotation (1/5 chance to lose vs 1/20).

Fun fact: You actually are allowed to tap the Karakas for mana in response to the Wipe Away. Players are allowed to activate mana abilities with split second cards on the stack so that triggered abilities that ask for mana payments can still function.

ah yes, was waiting for someone to point it out!
@CardmarketMagic2 ай бұрын
Yes you are absolutely correct! We missed that on the spot 😅
@liorramati2652 ай бұрын
It's actually more subtle than that. There's no special carve-out for mana abilities in split second. What's actually going on is that split second prevents you from taking any game actions that put things on the stack, but there's an entire category of game actions that _dont_ put things on the stack - special actions, of which mana abilities are sub-category. Unmorphing permanents is another sub-category of special actions, which is why you can willbender a spell with split second

@@liorramati265 There absolutely is a carve-out for mana abilities in split second. "702.61a Split second is a static ability that functions only while the spell with split second is on the stack. “Split second” means “As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t cast other spells or activate abilities that aren’t mana abilities.”" also, mana abilities aren't special actions. That's why Cursed Totem and Null Rod stop creatures and artifacts respectively from tapping for mana. "605.1. Some activated abilities and some triggered abilities are mana abilities, which are subject to special rules. Only abilities that meet either of the following two sets of criteria are mana abilities, regardless of what other effects they may generate or what timing restrictions (such as “Activate only as an instant”) they may have." "116.2. There are eleven special actions:" Feel free to check the comprehensive rules yourself-- activating mana abilities are not one of those 11 special actions.

Yes! Love to see some Lands getting played. One of my favorite Legacy decks of all time. Also, very slick plays with the double Gamble and the Karakas on Vendillion!
@bwen18Ай бұрын
There seems to be a few misconceptions about Karl's Gamble, Gamble line. His line does not play around FoW. Having 2 Gambles and 2 red sources is what plays around FoW. If Thoralf has 1 FoW, he will almost always be countering the 1st Gamble since Karl can potentially just Gamble for Karakas, which if not discarded, cannot be countered with FoW. Next level Thoralf with 1 FoW (if he knows exactly what Karl has planned), would let the Gamble resolve and then 2 for 1'ing Karl by countering the Crop Rotation; but even with this next level play, Karl still has the second Gamble which would give him a Karakas 75% of the time. Karl Gambles for Crop Rotation as a round about way of getting Karakas without risking the 1of Karakas being discarded. In a lot of decks, it usually isn't ideal for key cards to end up in the graveyard; but the Lands deck is different because the Card Advantage engine of the deck is Life from the Loam. So if Karl Gambles for Karakas and it is discarded, his next Gamble will be for Life from the Loam (which in the Lands deck is akin to Ancestral with dredge3). This line of play conserves material (by not having to sac a land to cast Crop Rotation) vs. the weighted average of Karl's actual line of play (since with Karl's line, some % of the time will end with Karl sac'ing a land to Crop Rotation into Karakas. Additionally (and more importantly), there will be a Life from the Loam either in hand or in the graveyard; which as mentioned before is the engine of the Lands deck. With a looming Emrakul attack incoming without Karakas, Karl is essentially on a 1 turn clock to get Karakas; but if Karl was on instead a 2 turn clock, the line of Gambling for Karakas with the plan of Gambling for Loam if Karakas is discarded with the 1st Gamble, Karl is guaranteed a Karakas in 2 turns. Karl actually had the time/mana/opportunity to setup a guaranteed Karakas on this pivotal turn. In Karl's previous turn, he could have deduced that Karakas was central to stopping Thoralf's gameplan and Gambled for a Life from the Loam. By doing so, Karl guarantees Loam in hand on the pivotal turn (either by successfully gambling OR dredging during his draw step) thus allowing Karl's 1st Gamble to guarantee a Karakas (either by successfully gambling OR targeting Karakas along with up to 2 other lands with Loam). The pre-emptive Gamble the turn before has the potential downside of discarding away Krosan Grip; I do not think this is that big of a deal because Grip does not stop SnT into Omni into Emrakul. Grip does stop SnT into Omni into a draw spell digging for Emrakul though. Karl's line is not strictly worse/better than my proposed line of play. One advantage of Karl's line is that it plays around Daze. In the most mana intensive outcome of Karl's line of play, he casts Gamble > Gamble > play Karakas and will still have 2 mana to pay for 2 Dazes. After some research on the OmniTell decks of the DTT/Gitaxian Probe era, it seems that most lists do not run Daze though.
@IIXzmozXIIАй бұрын
I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole play. His first Gamble can either be for a Karakas or a Crop Rotation. If he wins the Gamble, then he has a Karakas either directly or by a fetch. But more importantly, if he loses the Gamble, then whatever he tutored for is now in the graveyard. If this first Gambled card was a Karakas, he can Gamble again for a Life from the Loam, play it, get back the Karakas, and play that. and establish his Life from the Loam engine. If the first Gambled card was a Crop Rotation though, he Gambles again for a Karakas and gets it, but misses his engine. After reading tons of comments, I still don't understand why he doesn't just Gamble for Karakas anyways. If he wins the first Gamble, great. If he doesn't, then it's better to have it in the GY for the 2nd Gamble for Life from the Loam. Why was his line to Gamble for Crop Rotation first if it seems strictly worse? I'm missing something somewhere....

Excellent stuff as always! In game 3, was that a misplay by Thoralf to play Show and Tell so quickly? He put an Emrakul into play on a turn when he already knew Carl had Crop Rotation in hand (from G Probe) and he had open green mana to cast it for a Karakas if he wanted. Thoralf had no counterspells for the Crop Rotation. Carl went a different, but still effective route. But Thoralf had all that information, unless I was missing something.

As someone who follows mtg but doesn’t know this format super well, this was really entertaining!

Oh my god, Carl is such a master with this deck. That Tabernacle line made me cheer out loud. I love Lands, and this was a great showing.

0:07 I love that you said the decks are “insanely expensive,” but none of the cards in the graphic are on the Reserved List. 😂

Carl, you're no micro celebrity to me (amazing hat by the way!!) Best Deck Ever is such a great series and this opening match was PHENOMENAL. I cannot wait for more if this was just game 1!

YOOOO LETS GOOO! I was cheering for lands to take this but I was too confident since this is a rough matchup for the deck. Carl piloted real well, and the double gamble line was a great play! I'm real excited to see how far lands can go!
