Back during Christmas I drove across China, and while in Chongqing, I sat down with my friend Ben to talk about his life and experiences living in China.
I love watching these type of videos where it's unscripted, raw and down to earth. Being a foreign born Chinese descendant, I've always appreciated perspectives from foreigners who actually live in China. I am proud that my people are so welcoming and that there are opportunities for people from all over the world. Mutual respect and harmony is what we strive for.

It's remarkable you found it... Most videos that show up in Google's algorithm are negative about China... Coronavirus videos (or any type really) that say something negative about China have 500,000 to 1 million views. People who write anything neutral or positive are usually under 100,000.

Talk about a small expat world in China! I met Ben in Chengdu in 2014. He was working at a company where I did English training for some of the Chinese staff members. I met Ben at the company, and he's a nice guy. I spoke to him only once or twice, but he certainly stood out to me because of how well he spoke Mandarin and also how he adopted the Chongqing dialect. Plus he had a noticeable Minnesotan accent! I saw his desk, and he had Chinese flash cards and notes at hand. He certainly put in the effort, and as someone who was learning Chinese myself, I thought he set a good example. Ben probably wouldn't remember me, but because of how unexpected It was to see him in Daniel's videos, I thought I'd share my story.
Really enjoyed the video, As an Aussie living in Chongqing since 2000 its funny to hear some of the stories that sound so familiar. I have also spent time other provinces in China but I think Chongqing is not only one of the best cities in China but in the world. Some of the friendliest most welcoming people you will find.

yup.. it's quite common.. the scariest part is that so many people actually believe reports like that and have no clue they are being fooled... they believe it because they supposedly live in a "free society" with "freedom of speech" and "no censorship"... very very sad. and if you point the truth out to them they call you "50 cents army" or "ccp shill" or "wumao" or some other nonsense.

Very good format, as an expat myself from the West coast of Canada with an anthropology background, been coming and going to Asia since 1987, really good to hear that friend of yours. Especially the "fight" with the wife. I think it comes down to non verbal communication, what is unsaid is the most important thing in Japan (where I'm at now) and not verbiage. Take a look at this theory of high culture, low culture, it pretty much explains a lot of things. Personally, I try to explain our ways and at the same time, explain the fact that I respect their ways too. www.thnk.org/insights/communicating-across-cultures/
