I feel you so much on the fear of making bad art. Even though I know it's the only way to grow and get better, it still sucks to create something and feel like all you can make is ugliness and that you just want to draw like the people you admire. Your style is so whimsical and dainty and my stuff never seems to capture that simplistic joy that yours has. Sigh... Guess I'll just have to keep trying=)

the "you have to make bad art" part hits close to home 😞 as an artist myself, i sometimes find it very difficult to be completely satisfied with the works i produced.

Your comment hit home for me. I often ask myself too, "Why is it so hard to be completely satisfied?", then I feel bad about not being satisfied on top of my feelings of dissatisfaction.

As a baby graphic designer who just graduated uni last year I work in a pretty similar colour scheme when doing personal work because I love the way it looks and conveys my ideas! Like warm reds, yellows, oranges, pinks gives me sunset fantasy on a beach somewhere in the tropics haha. Every single time I try another colour combo or try to step out of my comfort zone it's SO hard, but slowly I've been trying to integrate more colours and styles and it feels really nice to expand my practice but also has helped to be really confident in what already works for me! Feeling really inspired by your videos recently and I want to thank you for that! I find it's so hard to come by moments of full on creative inspiration, watching your videos lights a fire under my butt to make more work, and keep going, even if it's not perfect!! Much love to you and yours

Cecilia Salcedo Maybe you could keep the colors you are comfortable with, but then add a color every time, get used to that color, then add another, and try to find color schemes that match. Like if you tend to do a lot of tropical colors, maybe add a turquoise to it. Or look at a scene of a landscape you like, then take the colors from it and kind of keep that same aesthetic of what it attractive of that landscape or artwork. Just some advice! (Idk if it’ll help you, but it helped me come out of my comfort zone with colors.) ❤️

Ok so I’m a writer, and in the world of writing we talk a LOT about rough drafts and how messy they are. I love the idea of you having sort of “rough drafts” of your artwork and then going back to do “second drafts” of them to make it better. Anyways your art is SO delightfully whimsical and I love it.

i'm 100% relating to everything you're saying about imposter syndrome and trying new things/making the "bad art"... and stylizing. gah. stylizing is so hard for me. i feel so drained when i draw lately, 'cause i feel like i'm trying to be the people i look up to and that it's not a world i should be in... like i should look in from the outside, and that i'm not deserving of being in it myself. this world being the artist world. like. oh my god. just make the art! it's so exhausting for me. so exhausting. i feel you.

when i first started doing a sketchbook i thought that everything had to be a perfect finished masterpiece in it. it was so stressful and i was never happy with with I did. recently tho I’ve just been doing anything, and trying new things. wether it looks amazing or bad it’s something to improve on and way less of a pain.

Chey, I've been feeling EXACTLY the same way. Over the past few weeks I've been plugging away at my art with no real love for it or particular direction. I've felt so disconnected from my style and the direction I want it to go in, and also suuuuper insecure about the place my art has in the world and where to take it, and wanting to push myself out of my comfort zone without quite knowing how! I think it might be a quarantine thing. I also think it's a mark of an artist bettering themselves because it's almost like you're aware of a plateau you've reached, and how you need to get better in order to progress both technically and stylistically :) So I want to THANK YOU for talking about it right away in your vlog, because I've been feeling quite thoughtful and down about my art for several weeks. Makes me feel like I'm not alone in this whole thing :)

I've been doing a lot of my usual resets and they just weren't quite getting me out but watching your creative process good and "bad" (I think what you make is stunning) helped me to refocus and calm. Thank you for being you and open about your discomforts, you are so brilliant ✨❤️

I’m started out on my art instagram and I always have this voice at the back of my head that I’m not good enough because I don’t necessarily come from an art background. I study engineering and so I’m not pursuing an art degree so I always feel like an imposter trying to become successful in this field. Especially since I mostly do abstract and so I don’t feel like I’m making solid work of art, when I know that’s not the case. It’s so absurd to think that you can still feel insecure or not good enough, when I consider you an established artist. You’re amazing and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

it's really good that you talk about these things because I feel like us artists will always look up to people, that will look up to other people and no one is ever satisfied with their art 100%, it's an endless cycle, but it's good to just try to love the "bad art" as hard as it may be because at the end of the day it's still what matters to improve!! I guess I just wanna say thank you for being so open about all of this, I look up to you a lot and it's humbling to see that everyone is trying to improve and that everyone goes through the same problems, you're amazing and your art makes my heart warm every single time I see it, so keep up the amazing work ❤

As a beginner artist, I’ve been having the same problems these days where nothing seems to work in my drawings, but I’ve had to just try and turn my frustration into lessons learnt and just take time to draw for fun and let loose- that seems to be working a bit more to just get out of my head but your videos are just so good for curing art-block too! 😊

I've been following you on yt for three years, I found you because of the bujo community, and I have loved to see you grow as an artist and as a person and I love your aesthetic and how beautiful and bright your house is. I was so glad you redid the painting because it really shows that we can't give up on ideas that we like just because they don't turn out perfect from the start. It's one of my favorite drawings of yours and it has such a beautiful meaning. We try and try again. As they sing in Lost in my Mind by The Head and the Heart, "we can't stop moving forward". Edit: It's something I was talking about with my therapist this morning; about getting out a harmful mindset and trying to make progress on the topics we were discussing and how much of a battle it is to not see a past version of myself as "better" than what I am now and trying to get into a mindset that is accepting and encouraging of the path I am on, and then also working on maintaining that. and boy is it hard.

So I have been feeling very similar, especially what she was saying about being scared to make bad art. I am generally happy with the things I make and enjoy the process of making them, I only begin to think that they are bad once I post them on social media and they don't get the reaction I expected. For now I am just making art as a form of therapy for myself as it helps with my anxiety. I think if art helps you, do it! And try not to worry about the finished piece or what people think of it, just enjoy the process (easier said than done I know.)

Hi there! I'm loving the direction of your style with these new paintings. I feel ya though, imposter syndrome sucks, especially when we have so much inspiration to look at, at our fingertips. I do the same thing when watching other people's drawing vids...but for you only being about 2.5 years in and already have 100k subscribers and a community that loves your work I think you're doing just dandy!! : ) Keep doing what you're doing, it can only get better : )
