Couldn't agree more about Blonde. It was nothing but darkness. It seems many things focus solely on the mental health. They fail to show what people are capable of despite the illness. It portrayed her as a sad little lamb. I had to turn it off. Love your new hair! You're not alone with being sick and feeling totally over it. Hope you feel better soon 💕.

Totally agree Bee that it’s ok to feel how you feel! Social media is so full of people who seem perfectly put together, and us normal folk really appreciate you being honest with us and living your reality rather than hiding jt under a brave face. You share so much of yourself, and we really appreciate it. Feel better. ❤️

As a fellow yellow-olive-fair-skinned lady, I greatly appreciate your videos. 🥰 Trying to find the right makeup/hair colors for my skin color has been an unsolvable puzzle for all the 2+ decades I've been messing with my hair and face. Sidenote: I have had food poisoning for at least 36 hours now, and I had 3 different appointments today that I couldn't miss and have been running around in a sweaty, dehydrated daze trying to do what I gotta do, so I am very comforted by this video..😂.. but I'm sorry you're going through that, too.

Stunning result Bee, super authentic! You and Sofia are both Soft Dramatics through and through so it's no surprise her style looks amazing on you. I think your idea of a "Blonde" film about, say, "Mamie Mansroe" would have been perfect and much more respectful.

I do wish there was a movie where they showed more of her intelligence and her career moves. Maybe a different film of her would be great. However this film seems to be made to focus on how awful the industry was to her and women in general in that time. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues I was okay with the stark brutality of it all. From the opening scene I understood that the fire was a metaphor for what Hollywood could really be, then/now (native Angeleno here). The cinematography was stunning! Ana De Armas was amazing. In the end it’s an artistic piece and we shouldn’t take it so literal yet if we do, it shows the power the filmmaker was able to convey on the viewer.

Great review, couldn’t agree more. I’ve never been so conflicted about a movie. I think the colour/b&w scene thing is because virtually every scene comes off the back of an image of marilyn and if colour faithful to the image

I like the point you made when you said she was abused as a child, And now years later she or at least her image is being abused by a fil company. I agree very strongly also with the point you make that we as a community and as filmmakers have a responsibility towards the artists we portray. Netflix responsibly could’ve made a disclaimer that this was purely a work of fiction. ❤

The only reason that I think the Dove commercial was okay, was that her family approved it and she really did love Dove chocolate so it didn’t twist her image in any way. Not that I like it. But it didn’t upset me like other horrible portrayals of famous deceased people!

I haven't seen Blonde because the one friend who tried said she couldn't get through it. Based on what I've read about in reviews it seems like the director didn't even like Marilyn or her films (he called Gentlemen prefer blondes a "movie about well dressed wh*res.") He seems to be trying to make the point that men hurt her and exploited her, but then films it all in exploitative ways. It's almost as if he wants to punish her (and he alluded to that in another interview). Personally I think it would be very different if a woman director directed it. Someone who actually cared about telling Marilyn's story--yes, her sorrow and her mental health and substance use problems, but also her achievements, her friendships, her triumphs. Marilyn is so much more than the worst things that happened to her--and this movie also apparently invents bad things that did not happen, or have never been adequately verified.

I would love to see you go all blonde! I feel you on the maintenance, though. I went Marilyn blonde in college, and while it looked so neat with my Asian/Mediterranean skin tone, I can't imagine the work it would have been to keep it up long term.

I felt completely repulsed by Blonde. They made Marilyn so incredibly one dimensional. It felt like a sideshow of every awful thing that could've possibly happened to a person with none of the reprieve. They violated her. After watching for so long I wanted to turn it off but I felt like it was too late. Even though it was largely fictional, it's not how I want to look back on Marilyn. Afterwards I felt incredibly sad and like I needed to watch an actual Marilyn movie.

I agree that we should let the woman rest. The movie should’ve focused more on Joyce Carole Oates I think. Seems few people realize that it’s based off of JCO’s novel, and I would much prefer to see how this iconic author was moved by the legend of Marilyn Monroe rather than another regurgitation of that dead horse of a legend that Hollywood keeps exploitatively beating. But, I also haven’t actually watched the movie or read the book 😳 I’ve just never been interested in any fictionalized account of Marilyn. I genuinely enjoy her work and think she’s very underrated as an actor, so I much prefer learning about the real person and her artistic development. She created an entirely new and distinct interpretation of the bombshell archetype, and I can’t really think of any other modern artist who can match that achievement. Those mannerisms that have become so iconic- the doe eyes, the breathy voice, the quivering lips, the sensual physicality- if you watch her films you can see that she practically sculpted that character out of her raw talent. Pretty fucking cool. If someone wants to tell that story, I’ll watch it, but until then, I’d rather spend my time just watching her original work.
@MissBeeTownsend
@MissBeeTownsend Жыл бұрын
That would have been such an interesting take to focus on Oats! You’re so right about her reworking of the Bombshell archetype. That’s the other thing that is frustrating - defenders of the film say it’s an artistic interpretation but it’s not. It’s based on the book, and the mini series starring Poppy Montgomery made when I was a teen told almost the exact same story. Not original at all.

This is why I personally like to not watch “Biopic” movies, it’s almost always Hollywood bullshit. I’d much rather watch a well done documentary or read a book about the person. I think I’ll pass on watching Blonde and just enjoy watching her work in Don’t Bother to Knock, Niagara, The 7 Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How To Marry A Millionaire, etc… the list goes on.
