So, I had to look this up on Google. You are absolutely right about the mold. “All silicone should be dried thoroughly after each use and stored in a dry area to prevent mold.”And the silicone on the pots are unlikely to be food grade as they can also leach something called Siloxanes.😱 Hopefully your Black Cat can be restored.

@soberplantguy Bonjour from NYC mon ami! It seems we are in the same boat... with the chores, not your black mold of death sitch. I have had to cut, prop, repot so many of these (insert spicy words) plants, I started rethinking my position on other medicinal plants. I feel like every time you post smtg I have a new fear unlocked, and my OCD brain (lacking the benefits of medicinal planty goodness) starts bouncing off the walls. Not me scream-whispering, "No, don't do it! Don't do it, Dave!!!" when you cut Cally. I realize that I don't need to imagine what it feels like being in a scary movie; if you're a plant parent, you already know. Commiserations and salutations from NYC my friend. Here's to hoping you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I love the fact you are not afraid to share your opinions with other growers that want the best for our plants. You have saved 3 of my rarer plants from tragedy. I had seen you using those pots and bought some myself. After watching, I quickly looked at my collection I found my hoya coriacea silver, begonia ginny galaxy and my multiflora variegated albo planted in those pots. I took them out and sure enough black mold. My begonia was actually starting to look a little dumpy. If it wasn't for you, I am positive I would have lost them. Your opinion may not matter to a few but it means the most to me. Keep doing what your doing. I appreciate you and your knowledge. Thank you my friend.

I live in central MN and I’ve had about 8 of my established hoya in my cabinets rot in the last couple of weeks. They were all in clear orchid pots and I check the roots every time I water. There were no issues the last time I watered. I think the temp going from 50ish with sun to below freezing and overcast suddenly triggered it. In the winter the cooler night time temps causing the humidity in my cabinets to spike from around 65% up to 90% (this doesn’t happen in the summer) and the coir mix hasn’t been drying out as fast. There also seems to be more condensation trapped inside the orchid pots lately, which could certainly be a low temp + high humidity issue. The ones in semi-hydro and living outside my cabinets all seem to be unaffected.

I think those pots are typically used for potting on seedlings after they’ve germinated but before they are transplanted outside, may be 4-6 weeks. The silicone base is there to push it up and out easily. I don’t think they are meant for long term house plant use. My best educated guess is the silicone base moves/adjusts to fit the shifting settling soil, thus it continues to shift, eliminating any porosity in the base as time goes on, as you previously mentioned about coco coir. Without the porosity, air cannot move through and mold & rot develops. The stiffer plastic pots do not adjust and it is harder & takes longer for those pockets to fill in. That’s the only thing I can think of that may be going on. 🤷♀️ Take it or leave it.
@soberplantguyКүн бұрын
Could well be, but the manufacturer gives no indication that these are only to be used temporarily, so who knows? Be well, Amy, and thanks for the nice comment 😊

Ack! It totally sucks that you're going through that, but glad that you ID'd the problem. I don't really understand why people get their noses out of joint about an honest review. It is not a personal attack on them or their growing methods. Sounding like all 56 of my years, I think that people are a little too influenced by "influencers." It's totally okay to keep using a product that is working for you even if it isn't working for someone who reviews it on social media. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing. I've been using Pure Crop I for several months now and have had a good experience with it. I'm going to keep on using it. I did decide to make some modifications after Miro voiced his concerns recently, but I didn't chuck it just because you didn't love it and Miro has some concerns. I'll keep it in mind, but will continue to do what has been working for me. (But I won't be buying the silicone-based plant pots. haha.) Hey, Happy Thanksgiving, Dave!
@soberplantguyКүн бұрын
This is the only correct reaction 🤣 Doug Chamberlain says that terracotta pots are a poor choice for Hoya. Well, sir ... 😆 And I'm going to keep using the PureCrop1 I have, too. I just find spider mites on a lowly green carnosa. Blasted 'em but good with it. And it will absolutely take care of it. (And Miro didn't have it quite right that PC1 is "just corn and soybean oil" as you know. Pretty fancy processing they do, and most importantly to me: it ain't greasy!)

I’m glad you like your shepherdii. It’s was one of my earlier Hoyas in my collection, simply because it was available in a store. It just started blooming this spring, and it’s my favorite bloomer so far. I like the smell enough that if it was perfume I would wear it. And I like the little bell-shaped flowers. I think they are nicer than the button-shaped blooms lots of Hoyas have.
