This true Cebuano/Bisaya is being spoken now by younger generation also the wave of muslims living in Zamboanga speak Tausug. Cebuano is the de facto lingua franca of almost all of Mindanao

True filipinos can easily adopt other country language I have compatriot here in the remote area of Philippines he went to taiwan with illegal papers and not even know how to read and write he was lucky because he stay there for a long years but when he was caught for illegal alien he was deported but when taiwanese people went to our province he is the only one communicate and interpreting what they are saying to our compatriots.

I am a nurse in the US and I speak Chavacano to my Mexican and Puerto Rican patients and we understand each other well. I’ve always thought that if I brought my Mexican buddy here and left him alone in the city, that he wouldn’t have any problem communicating with people, because of our Spanish creole, Chavacano.

Dear Sol and Luna, Huge thanks for bringing it to the mainstream consciousness of Filipinos in general the fact that there is in fact the existence of Spanish Creole language in the Philippines in the form of Chavacano. And it's alive, not dead which means it is still in the circulation in the larger Zambuagueno society in Zambuanga Peninsula in Mindanao. Its so sad nowadays that some if not a large number of Filipinos don't even know it existed and not aware of it. Hopefully thru your channel, your penchant to look into the Spanish and therefore Hispanic influences in the Philippines serve as an impetus for revivalism of the language be it in Chav or in it's original form, the Spanish one. I still remember my grandparents told me Spanish is being taught as a subject in college back then so that Jose Rizal's patriotic poem " Me Ultimo Adios" is being required to be recited in Spanish class by all students. And it is true even to the provinces nationwide, say for example in my home province Masbate's Osmeña Colleges where I graduated. Sadly it was an obligatory subject up until 1986 when Tagalog and English was established as an official languages during the administration of President Corazon Aquino.

It is important to preserve chavacano... I hope Zambo LGU will take action in preserving this... Butuanon language and Surigaonon language are dead... The whole mindanao (except Zamboanga City and BARMM area) speaks Bisaya Cebuano language... We boast to have a lot of languages here in the Philippines. But, anytime soon, the numbers of these will be lessened... A lot of kids too only speak english, i dont know why new gen parents are only teaching their kids English😢

This is fun! i have been fascinated with Zamboanga ever since i knew they were speaking Chavacano. Whenever i see videos of people from there that speak "Spanish" it makes me proud that there is a place here in the Philippines that speaks like that. Hey! have you heard of the vlogging channel "Pinoy in Equatorial Guinea"? I think that the family there is residing here in the Philippines for good. Maybe a collaboration with them and you guys would be fun because you will be able to communicate with them properly!

It's a good thing that Spanish didn't take over the Philippines ... just look at the Spanish colonial legacy in Central and South America ...many indigenous tribes there have lost their native languages and culture. It's a miracle that many native Philippine languages have survived to this day (although with lots of Spanish loan words, but that's a given).

I’ve visited Davao & love it. I speak Spanish & Portuguese so am anxious to visit Zamboanga. Considering the role of Spain in the formation of the Philippine nation & identity, and the incorporation of Spanish terms in virtually every Filipino language & dialect, it’s hard to believe so few Pinoys actually speak Spanish. Other than Zamboanga, Chavacano is also native to Cavite, though I’m told its usage is decreasing there.

I feel like its not just about kids being ashamed of speaking Chavacano. Zamboanga City is just a diverse place ethnicity-wise because it is surrounded by provinces and cities that each have their own languages. When these people migrate, they bring their own languages with them hence the significant number of Cebuano, Tausug, Yakan, Samal, Badjao, etc speakers in Zamboanga. Some of the kids from the interview may have come from those ethnicities hence they can only understand Chavacano and not speak it. They might be like me who is still yet to be fluent on that language coz my mother tongue is Cebuano since my father-side is from Zamboanga del Norte. It's harder for us to learn Chavacano coz growing up, we are required in school to learn Tagalog as the 2nd language and English as the 3rd language. The only way to learn Chavacano is to have Chavacano-speaking friends

In zamboanga, we say ustedes instead of kamo when you are speaking to someone you are not very familiar with. Contigo, con uste (you) when you speak to someone who you just met, speaking to the elderly, speaking to someone who is higher in social standing, Con vos when you are speaking to someone who is of lower social standing than you or younger than you or to someone who you are very familiar or close to like friends otherwise it is bastos. We also use kamo when you are talking to friends or younger siblings.

My grandma is from Zamboanga and my grandfather is from Cavite City. There's a difference between their Chavacano language. Zamboanga Chavacano is mixed with Visaya and Chavacano from Cavite City is mixed with Tagalog. I use to speak Chavacano, but now, I'm more for the Spanish from Spain. I grew up in California where there's lot's of people that can speak Spanish from Mexico, since California and Mexico are neighbors. I consider myself from Cavite City since I was born there and have never been to Zamboanga. I'm "Caviteño". Thanks for the vlog!

Ya chavacano will not be forgetan coz I was there in 1975 n revisited zamboanga again n 2015 n off course every bodyspeak chabava n am happy to hear the dialect of zamboanga ones more couse right now am staying here in Los Angeles US of A n you know mucho latin american live here n thier spanish s almost semilar to chavacano gracias

I still hate whoever those Government Officials in 1987 who agreed on removing Spanish Subject in schools here in the Philippines, it just doesnt make sense, if their point is to erase any traces of Spain in the country, then they shouldnt also make English as our 2nd national language because US also colonized the PH for 50 years, why not teach Tagalog, English and Spanish in school all together? my point here is the JOB OPPORTUNITIES it will open for the Filipino people for being trilingual speakers, just imagine...just imagine the investments of not only English based company businesses but also Spanish businesses from all around the world. dumb patriotic Government officials, not using their head.

You should go to Sangali, Curoan & Vitali to experience the deepest chavacano speaking people. The metro Zamboanga has been long mixed with Visaya and Huloano speakers.

I was good in Spanish 1,2,3 and 4 with almost 95 as my grade. But I was not so interested until I migrated to the USA and I don’t know I can encounter Latinos at work. They were aghast at me but tell them I know just a little bit.

You should do a collab with the Equitorial Guinean vloggers (who speak Spanish) with their Filipino friend. It’s interesting when you do a collab discussing about your Spanish slangs and words with different meanings as well as the accents. I’ll be waiting. They’re also popular vloggers en Filipinas.

I was amazed that you understood each other without translating., i think the Spaniards who ruled Zamboanga during Spanish era taught Spanish there.,and did not prevented Zamboangeño to use it., unlike in some area in the Philippines., i learned from history that Spaniards did not allow every Filipino to speak Spanish because they say we are “indyo”., and Spanish doesn’t suited us., i’m glad Zamboanga adopted the Language (broken Spanish) because its very useful now a days and upto the next generations

Originalmente, mi padre fue de Zamboanga pero habla Visaya. Pero es dificil para me a entender chavacano. Creo que las reglas de chavacano son muy confusando 😅 Lo siento mucho. Mi idioma primero es ingles. Pero entiendo español mas o menos. Español es mi tercero idíoma.

In Chavacano language they said “Tienda” as store In Spanish also “tienda “ in my province Isabela we call store as “Tienda “ too ! It’s nice to listen to Spanish and Chavacano language ❤and it’s also good that lots of people in Zamboanga that can speak Chavacano and some even they can’t speak fluently they can understand!

Maganda naman ang wikang español pero mas maganda pa rin ang English kasi malaking tulong ito sa ekonomiya natin, gaya ng BPO. Nagpapadala rin tayo ng mga English Teacher sa mga karatig bansa gaya ng Thailand.

Its flattering and its heartfelt when foreigners cares about other cultures. Philippines is colonised by Spain for 333 years and they bring the religion christianism. Many people died because of how they treat Filipinos before as alipin in their own land. Even its the case, Filipinos still proud of getting a little bit of Spanish culture which was preserved for many years from their history.

My Grandmother speaks Mandarin,Chavacano and Español and she really sound like native Spanish just like my great Grandma when she was still alive. I hope Spanish language will be back in one of the school subjects.❤
