something i'd like to point out about medibang paint pro and firealpaca is that they are made by the same company, which is why they feel similar. medibang is in general the more professional feeling of the two and that's on purpose. Another thing is that firealpaca does actually have an animation feature. a very crude one, but it's there. Going into this i kinda wished you'd have covered sai, but after seeing the video i have a feeling you wouldn't like it much, and for reasons i get. in its current state, sai is ancient, and doesn't look like much, but SAI2 is currently in development and i'm curious to see what you'd think of it once that is out. I use SAI 2 development build for most of my artwork so it it's quite functional, but again, i doubt it'd necessarily be to your liking.

You can use sai2 right now, it's kinda early release but I've been using it for like 2 years... Small changes from sai1 but not terrible. Much bigger brushes though, and actually works with my ugee tablet on windows 10 for pressure sensitivity.

Having worked professionally with both GIMP and Inkscape I can say for certain that they shouldn't have been on the list for "Photoshop alternatives". GIMP is for editing photos and retouching images, you COULD create art with it, but wouldn't necessary recommend it. Inkscape as you correctly assumed is for creating clipart and similar artworks (for prints and such), you shouldn't really be creating the original artwork in it from scratch, but rather bring in a sketch or reference image from another program and work from there.

just to add on: if you want to see GIMP and Inkscape used the way they're meant to be, watch some videos from Logos By Nick. Inkscape is a graphic design program. It's for designing logos, brochures, posters, business cards etc. Gimp is primarily focused on photo editing.
@JazuNeon7 жыл бұрын
I think some of you missed the point of this video. Jazza is a professional artist who has used professional programs. The point of this video was to find the "best" program out of the cheapest art programs. That program would have the best qualities/highest potential to create "professional" art work you could possibly even sell. (Like big complicated backgrounds etc you know what I mean) So pretty much a program closest to Photoshop and other professional programs. Now that doesn't mean you shouldn't use FireAlpaca and other programs Jazza didn't like. Those clearly aren't Photoshop or nowhere near it. But if those programs fit you and the ways you use them then go for it. People make amazing stuff with MS paint and the program is just crap. Jazza clearly has high standards and a mindset of how an art program should work and how it's best for him. But that doesn't mean it's best for you. The review was from professional's prespective, there's no way he could demonstrate how a complete newbie feels. If you have never drawn before picking up a very "complicated/professional looking" program like Krita could be a challenge. But when you learn how to use a complicated program properly, it's already better than you knowing how to use MS Paint cuz the program itself is very limited so your knowledge would be limited as well. So you draw with whatever you like but be open for reviews and opinions. Try different programs and find best for you. So what if your program wasn't his favourite? You who have used programs that are more limited and simple probably feel like the more advanced programs are confusing and way too complicated with way too many features. Where as Jazza who has used Photoshop feels like those programs lack a lot of things. Even though he tried to find programs that are good for newbies as well he maybe failed a bit cuz of how much he knows about art programs. So in conclution Krita is probably out of these programs the most advanced one and probably the best for more professional use and for those who already know the basics. If you wanna sketch or draw comics that are simple and don't need much of the advanced features or you have never drawn on a computer before then using a simple program is probably your pick. Again try out different ones and explore! :) Edit: Just wanna point out more, you can draw with whatever program you want and the program doesn't tell how good of an artist you are. The art is what we "judge" and base our opinions on, not the program. The program you use doesn't make you any less of an artist than anybody else. //Sorry this was a rant 😂

Macromedia Flash MX 2004(which is free from adobe now)is a fantastic animation program that many people have used before it was just named Flash 8 and up(now renamed Animate CC) Basically it's V7.0 plus it uses ActionScript 2.0. Now days 3.0 is used but I don't think anyone should have to many issue making a flash game with it. Now it is a bit outdated but it should satisfy a animator fairly well. has onion skins, tween, fps you can change,Layers, etc Honestly it isn't to much behind from it's time for what the newer flash is/Animate CC it might not have a few things. but for the most part it should do for quite a few people. It also supports pressure pen's/screens and it works fantastically once you turn down the smoothing a little bit.

You're missing where he basically pointed out that it was an okay tool if you're not looking to do anything professional but if you're actually looking for something to work with or look to upgrade from professionally it's bad. I've used Fire alpaca myself, and while it's a very usable program getting something to the point of where I would charge someone money for it has taken not just hours, but switching the piece to different programs to touch up, add effects and other polishing techniques. Jazza's looking at the program from that view point, which is why it was rated lowly, as a complete package when it comes to professionally making and polishing artwork, not just for the drawing aspect.

I first used FireAlpaca for making digital art but then I encountered an error in saving my drawings so I switched to using Krita. Krita was really difficult to use the first time I did because of all the different panels and settings but once you get used to it, it becomes sorta easier to use. The brushes have a wide range and you can customize your interface to how you like it. I actually used Krita to draw my profile picture, hehe. I think Krita is a really good alternative to Photoshop because it was designed to look like Photoshop and you can produce really cool drawings with it even though it's sorta laggy sometimes.

Medibang is good for beginners honestly. At first I was confused since Medibang was the first program that I started using for digital art and I used my phone. But later on I found it a really easy program. Then I got my mobile tablet and I really enjoyed it. (Do note I made my profile pic with it) and when I got used to the watercolour it was really smooth. There's also this program called Ibispaint X which is way more advanced and... I didn't like it, I'm still getting used to drawing on a really smooth surface, so, without the sharp pen brush from Medibang, lineart is hard and the blending in my opinion is better with Medibang's wet watercolour than with Ibispaint's various watercolour based brushes. Overall I feel like Medibang is better for beginners, mostly because of the sharp pen which, in my opinion, is very very helpful.

His review of Inkscape really seemed like: “This wrench makes a terrible screwdriver, but I guess you could use it as a hammer if you really wanted.” It doesn't work for drawing like that because... it wasn't made for drawing like that at all. It also creates scalable vector images, which none of the other programs he reviewed can do even passably well.

@Null8fuenf104 жыл бұрын
Jaza expects Inkscape to be a Photoshop (bitmap) alternative, when it's an Illustrator (vector) alternative... I personally love for example to convert (low res) bitmap linework of comics into vector, scale them up to any size and either color them in in Inkscape for a very clean look, or use another bitmap program for a more natural look. Or to draw the whole comic in Inkscape, since it allows me to manipulate the lines I've drawn more easily, fluently and precisely, since I don't have to deal with pixels but nodes. From their ground up, bitmap and vector are two completely different systems, have different techniques, thinking and philosophies, though both are equally creative and 'professional'. Was excited for Jaza to share his experience with vector graphics, sadly he treated them like bitmaps. And for Gimp, it's an alternative for what Photoshop actually was and still has in its name, to manipulate photos.
@Kasiarzynka4 жыл бұрын
Yes but he *did* saggy GIMP was for image manipulation and he *did* say that Inkscape was for vector graphics so... what's your problem, people? He said he'd be judging whether or not these programs were any good for drawing the way he does. And to be honest, when I got my first graphic tablet years ago, I searched for programs that had pressure sensitivity and where I could draw some cool stuff. Inkscape was on the list of recommended and despite knowing that it was primarily a vector graphic program, I thought it could do both. Boy, was I wrong. So it does make sense to put it in this comparison, as there're sources that claim it can do this kind of stuff.

Inkscape is actually a pretty powerful tool for logo design. It's not the most polished or well designed, but there's a lot you can do with it. It's just a replacement for Illustrator, not Photoshop.
@RailRide7 жыл бұрын
I could see where things were going by the time he got to Inkscape. Even though he pointed out the "elephant in the room" of it being a vector graphics application, he then proceeded to (attempt to) use it like another Photoshop-esque raster-drawing application. Using Inkscape that way _will_ drive you to drink :D. I put that effort up there with re-creating Jazza's opening animation with oh, I dunno...Blender. On the other hand, once I understood the limitations of vectors--(I never used Illustrator)--by using Inkscape to ink penciled sketches, I was eventually able to do some pretty nifty tricks with it. My personal pinnacle was vectorizing a photograph of an automobile. By using color samples from the original and applying them to appropriately-shaped and stacked gradients, I was able to re-create the image at near photo-realism, with fewer than a dozen of Inkscape's tools, if that many. But it required a _completely_ different approach to achieve that result than one would use in a Photoshop work-alike. Something else I learned while doing vector inking, at least in Inkscape, not only do you have layers in the traditional sense, but each shape you put down _is it's own layer_ . So they can be stacked and rearranged on an X, Y *and* Z axis--even within a defined layer, which probably explains why he was unable to move some of the scribbles he was trying to grab. What I'd like to see though, is how Photoshop _itself_ would fare in terms of usability from the perspective of someone who never used it. (FYI: I typically jump back and forth between Krita, Clip Studio Paint EX, Inkscape, and the extremely ancient Micrografx Picture Publisher)
@MusicalRaichu7 жыл бұрын
his focus was very narrow, basically, i work one way and does the tool work that specific way. out of those i've tried gimp and krita only, and found krita utterly useless: i could draw nothing, i couldn't pick a colour and see its rgb, i couldn't crop an image. so because it doesn't work the way that makes sense to me, i rate it 0 but i know someone who does great work with it. i also know someone who does stunning work with paintstorm, which jaz also rated poorly.

I agree it’s powerful. But it is even more powerful, not only for logo design. There are millions of tutorials out there for hundreds of aspects of the program. I use it for years now and I'm quite sure I used not more than 40% until now. Also what is important for you depends very much on what you want to do with it (paint, photo edtiting/retouch, composings...) If I were you I would look into the free demo and play around a little. There should be tutorials on youtube like "How to start with PS" or "Basics of PS". Maybe that's a start for you and if you like it and you want to work more with it you can find more tutorials for any question you might have and everything you want to do with it.

Both are meant to be used for editing photos (photoshop especially, I wonder if any of you forgot about the whole thing about photoshopping something to know being a metaphor of editing something? and the fact that adobe has a program for drawing and digital design called illustrator, I should know because I use it in my computers class), but can be used for drawings. It is primarily an image manipulator, but it has all the tools to be used for art, just like photoshop does.

I make props and prop templates and inkscape is pretty ideal for that sort of work! I definitely wouldn't try to make any art with it, but it is really nice for working with a specifically sized area for templates and making exports of certain sizes. Inserting an image and scaling it to whatever size you need is really easy and drawing over it in another layer is probably the best use for it, as far as I've experienced

Wow I'm.... genuinely surprised about your reaction to FireAlpaca. Of course my opinion might be biased because it is my favourite program and I have been using it for years (I tried a lot of others and came back to this one everytime), but I think it is one of the best and easy free drawing programs out there. As you said the grid system is amazing. But the one thing that has me worry, is your circle test. Right after I saw it, I opened FireAlpaca and drew a bunch of circles... which turned out great ! It follows my line exactly. It's even what I like about this program : you get *exactly* what you draw. Pen pressure works great, there's a "correction" feature if you want to make straighter lines (in which case it will of course not follow your pen as exactly as the 0 mode), and I was even surprised to see that there's a clipping feature, that I usually use on Photoshop. I personally recommend it to any beginner - same goes with Medibang Paint. It's made by the same people and is pretty much the same program, except it's black instead of grey (the only reason *I* see a difference is that I haven't updated my FireAlpaca since 2015 and my version of Medibang is fairly recent). So, I really, really don't understand your circle test. It might have something to do with your tablet, or I don't know, but that is the one thing that works great with FireAlpaca, at least for me. It's a simple program and you can do great things with it, for the reason that most artists that use it feel very comfortable with it. (Man, the "right click to take the color you're hovering" is by far my favourite and it always upsets me to not find it on photoshop) ... I was not paid by the company to say all that, haha. I usually would not defend a simple program so much, but I'm genuinely surprised that you had such a negative experience with what I feel is the most intuitive and comfortable to use free drawing program.

Corel is actually ok once you've had a lot of time with it. It's like Illustrator in that way, it pisses you off and is extremely confusing at first but after enough experience it becomes useful. My only problems with Corel is that you need to download multiple programs to use it and that once your time runs out, you're fucked. I forgot my account login and couldn't use it, so I had to uninstall it.

A bit disappointed with the FireAlpaca review, I understand that you felt this way about the program, but as someone who had never done digital art and started out with FA, I like it a lot, and managed to grow using it. Also, I thought the circle test was a bit unfair, it's common knowledge amongst FA users that you need to set your correction to a slightly higher value, and you will get gorgeous results :)

I have used Firealpaca a few times before jumping to Krita some days ago, and I must admit that Krita feels much more comfortable, easier and fun to use, but Firealpaca had a nice curve tool (can't get the Krita curve tool to work as I wish >_>) and was a decent opportunity to get into digital art for the first time, I learned some helpful things about layering and stuff ^^ but right now I'm pretty happy with Krita, I kinda loved it since the first second using it, but everyone has different needs and expectations in terms of the different features all the various programs provide :) even MS Paint is a great tool if the user knows his/her stuff ^^

If Jazz’s does do this, I recommend using the MediBang Paint app. Besides having to manually put on pen pressure and having a different format, the app is almost identical to its PC version, so it should make this a little easier.

Been looking for a good allrounder PS alternative for a while now due to the whole subscription thing. Just tested Krita and it actually seems really good and has a really intuitive workflow that feels quite natural as a PS user. Can't believe how much better than GIMP it seems to be. Might really end up being my default image editing program from now on. Thanks for the great advice! :D

@@VintageMemory I personally use Krita myself, I was just suggesting pirating Photoshop, especially since they do charge an exorbitant ammout of money for their program that is above what the average is usually willing to pay. I had several friends back in high school who pirated it for that exact reason.
@CertifiedSunset4 жыл бұрын
@@VintageMemory How do I feel? If they were going to pirate it then what could I do to stop them. On top of that, if you create a good product then they are more likely to go ahead and buy the legit version when they do eventually get the money to do so. That is the exact same case with the Witcher 3 , the devs said that they don't mind people pirating their gamebecause so many people later on end up buying it anyways.

Photoshop is not at all beginner friendly. After having a considerable ammount of experience with both, gimp and ps, I honestly prefer gimp for the simplicity. Once you know how to use the tools right, you can easily create some masterclass images with gimp. I really feel like he misrepresented the program in this video,especially the circle test where suddenly he was able to draw perfect circles around the bad circles afterwards :D
@ninja_tony4 жыл бұрын
@@TheShiranuii I feel like you both are living in opposite world lmao. I've used all of these programs and about a dozen others, and Gimp is easily the worst I've ever experienced, AND the most UN-user friendly lol. I agree that it technically can do just about anything you need it to, but almost everything is more difficult to do in the first place compared to other programs. It is definitely better as an image manipulation software, but as an art program, it's a joke. It's funny that he mentioned how he actively hated using it, because I always feel like I'm being punished every time I try to use it.
