I bought my wife a really well kept 2010 (K12) Nissan Micra 1.2 with 89k on the clock last year from a local car dealer. It has a full service history, but i gave it a full service myself at my works garage anyway and i put a set of 4 Falken tyres on it. All in it cost me £2280. It's been an exceptionally good car! Zero faults have occured since owning it, plus it's flown through almost every MOT it's ever had, including the one it had a fortnight ago. Zero advisories again. I can't recommend this car enough! Does 40+ mpg effortlessly and although theres no power house under the bonnet, it does a great job at keeping up with traffic and it's surprisingly fun around the bends. If you're looking for a dependable runaround then look no further. The Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris of similar years is also highly recommended.
@732davenАй бұрын
the K12 Micra 1.2L is a very reliable car indeed. I had a 1996 1L K11 March imported from Japan and the engine was rock solid, but had to get rid of it due to an electrical issue with my tail light. Electrical issues seems to be the weakness with some nissans... On top of the fit/jazz and Yaris which are defo top notch, i would add the 1.3L (pre 2010) and 1.2L swift (post 2011) and the mazda 2/demio 1.3L, also with a petrol engine. I had them both, and you can reach 300,000km on the clock no bother.

A comment on the Z4. I had one for a couple of years and just sold it about 6 weeks ago. £5k is very strong. I paid £1750 for mine and got £2k when I sold it and even that was pushing it. People assume they're expensive because it's a sexy little car with an endearing badge on the bonnet but unless it's a stunner you won't be paying over £3k (In southern England at least). I believe the 2.5 will be slightly higher than 177bhp (should be around the 190 mark), I believe it's the 2.2 thats 177bhp which was what I had. It was ample for such a small car and the short gearing made it feel very lively albeit a bit buzzy at motorway speeds. The issue with the roof tends generally to be related to the motor being located right where the water drains down from the roof and over time if the drainage ports get blocked the roof motor gets submerged and rusts. I and many others have been lucky enough to fix the motors by removing them from within the boot and flushing them through with WD40 or similar, which can sometimes be enough to free the motor up and bring the motor back to life. You then relocate it into the boot or elsewhere to stop it from rusting again. It takes about an afternoon to do. Aside from this, very sturdy engines with a multitude of parts available from the shared 3, 5, X3 and X5 series cars. Easy to work on and pretty reliable, excluding the typical BMW ailments (coolant expansion tanks, DISA valves, VANOS etc). Sort those things out and they're essentially as robust as a 3 series.

@paultasker778828 күн бұрын
The problem with the mini was the 1.6 petrol I think not the diesel as here. This petrol engine was shared with PSA and the N14 did have many issues. The facelift petrol is N18 which fixed some of them but is still a bit troublesome. Having owned one (cooper S 2012) for 18 months you get very familiar with a reduced power light coming on. Became obvious why the car was sold by previous owner.. The reasons for this so far include 2 new coil packs, new thermostat, new intake vanos solenoid, new exhaust vanos solenoid. All in all quite a complex engine. When it's fully working it's a fun punchy engine. When it is in reduced power mode it's like a 1.2. It seems to resume full power if you turn it off and on again and the last fix (vanos intake solenoid) has given me 2 weeks without it going into reduced power at all. Touch wood!

@paultasker7788 I knew the n14 engine was bad.. but I thought n18 sorted many of the problems out. I love R56 design but those engines for copper s put me off. I had 3 1/2 years of trouble free motor with my 1.6 copper diesel. Oil change every 7000 miles no problems at all.

avoid any turbo 3 cylinder 1.0 petrol, anything with eco boost, buy a normally aspirated petrol or a big diesel if you do long journeys.

If anyone is looking for a cheap and reliable hatchback I would recommend they look at the Hyundai i30. I bought a 2014 1.6 CRDi diesel for £5k in 2024 and it has been a great car. Reliable, not too gruff for a diesel, does around 45-50mpg around town and 60 mph on the motorway. Has bluetooth, cruise control and speed limiter. Not much else I want really. Build quality is good and no creaks or rattles when I bought it at 70k miles. I'm going to run it into the ground before I buy another car!

Cheap modern diesels clutches are around £1000-1500 in a garage to replace.. people need to stop buying these cars if they can't cover the costs or do some diy maintenance to save elsewhere. Glow plugs, dpfs are all astronomical costs.. Stick with petrol

my first car was diesel yes old it was good but was in often for egr. that written of by old lady on false plates. went to petrol small i20 1.2 it had same torque as my old diesel what really sold it to me and 5 and half plus years dam reliable i went from 2011 gen1 to the 2015 shape same engine. was a little shock with mpg changing from very eco 1.4tdci to a 1.2 petrol but 1.2 needed working. 1.4tdci drive it like i stole it it still get close to 40mpg a long run ive had over 60mpg and day the turbo pipe gave up and 8 hour drive home must been close to 80mpg amazing fuel usage. my old i20 2011 1.2 i was lucky to get 40mpg and as low as high 20's very low 30's mpg it drank fuel so a huge difference from diesel, then fuel almost double so i lost half my mpg and double the cost it really was two hits, but now its normal to use a bit more fuel and newer i20 wow its great on fuel like where i would been getting average 35mpg this getting 44mpg and that mostly in hills my old car could got 30mpg and a long trip on easy roads less hilly thing can get 57mpg so a huge improvement mpg over the old i20. i could so easy went for a modern diesel but no not with all the modern issues they come with i want a simple engine to maintain and one easy to work on and i20 that fits that bill and old one dam reliable so hope new one just as good

Mods were huge in the nineties and early noughties but new car mods done subtlety are good but lowered with tints, massive rims is not a car most people want to be seen in. And yes there are car enthusiasts who really pamper their car but don't usually sell for 5k or less.
@tecdesigns818329 күн бұрын
Too be honest the wheels on the merc aren't big they're probably a inch or two bigger. Oem wheels always suit mercs and bmws better. The tints are what make it look awful. I've never paid more than 3.5k for a car and one of my best was a very pampered one. Too be honest I deal with customer driving at work everyday generally I see a total lack of car for standard cars unfortunately now they're not something to treasure they're the equivalent of washing machine you throw away when ur done.

Think you might have dismissed the mini unfairly. The problematic engine is 1.6 petrol not the 1.6 diesel. N14 Cooper S in particular known to have many big issues. The N18 is the Cooper s facelift which i own and I like it but wouldnt recommend it to others as it is too complex and pretty much all faults result in you often being in reduced power mode with half an engine light on the dash. The fix is to turn it off and on again. My mini specialist keeps a spare coil pack in the boot as a maintenance item like screenwash or oil! After swapping quite a lot of parts (vanos solenoids, thermostat, coil packs, all of which were faulty) I've finally got full power back! Sum up. A lot of extra stuff to fail and at over 10 most parts will be starting to fail. The diesel though ive heard much better things about and the 3rd generation mini is far better than 2nd. Couldn't afford one of those but in the long run probably spend as much in repairs on a 2nd gen so save up for a 3rd generation.

i20, yes timing chain issues but only 100-120k miles if looked after. and lots room to work on so job to fit new one is really not an issue just fit a new one before it goes bad at around every 100k miles is my answer and had one priced up its around £500 maybe up to £600 depending where you go and chain kit you get, my mechanic told me around £500-550 what really is not that bad for 100k miles. and pretty good compared to 1.5 Renault engine with two belts my brother got quoted around same as chain cost for mine and it requires two belts in a horrid place. owned my old gen 1 it 2011 but not face lift but cheap £35 tax for over 5 and half years the most reliable car ive owned and it was only a stop gap car but ended on keeping it for years, engine needs a bit of a work but never had issues keeping up with people its lightweight 1.1 ton with tank fuel helps. impressed me so much ive gone got my self a 2015 i20 with same engine but this time premium se spec it has everything i know now what required to stop chain doing damage so ive already planned to do it at 100k miles but still got 47k miles to do, old car i did not burn oil. only thing to be weary off of rust but you keep on top that and protect it what my plan is in jan . the gen 1 inc face lift id say esp face lift protect where seal is on back window under the wiper they love to rust in that area and my 2011 was far better than guy across the road with 2013 face lift his very bad rusted. but did not stop me buying another one i knew it flaws and most very simple to solve a chain at 100k and rust protection and do what you can o protect body, i know my old car it was dam reliable and even at 13 years old 8 hour thrash over welsh hills and mountains on it last run it did not miss a beat it was still spot on. 2 days time doing my 2nd big drive 8 hours through center wales, one thing id say 2015 shape is sure better more stable at higher speed corners but it is a bit bigger wider and tad more weight but adaptive cruise will get some use in wales in the horrid low speed zones and lucky cruise works as low as 19mph so enter one those zones sit back relax

@@732daven if buying used and it close to 100k you factor that in to price, get it fixed for £500 maybe tad more that prob see the car out , just see a good service history, and good mot history i feel you be good. a chain kit f fit yourself £300 that so cheap for another 100k miles is reason id say nothing to worry about, if buying a car close to that miles factor it in to the cost prob get a good discount then fix it with discount. mechanically they pretty good and mine very reliable, only thing id say look out for rust that i feel far worse thing to look for than engine. maintain them well im sure you have little issue, im on my 2nd one but newer version and engine i know and when it gets to near 100k miles i book it in for new chain if it needs i or not but still 47 k miles yet to do so for now no need to think about it, a full dealership history, was owned by ex staff who retired, one garage looked after car for the last 9 years so i feel ive got a good one it runs like new
