Cheap DIY lavalier & shotgun microphone for smartphones | Homemade camera gear #2

Here is how I made my own lapel and mini shotgun microphone for filming youtube videos with a smartphone. Comparing multiple salvaged electret mic capsules to find the one with the best sound quality, and making the microphones using literally scrap material only.

It's worth mentioning that the lapel mic doesn't actually sound as bad as it seemed in the last clip, it still sounds better than the shotgun mic does.

It's worth mentioning that the lapel mic doesn't actually sound as bad as it seemed in the last clip, it still sounds better than the shotgun mic does, I just did a bad job at using it. 🤣 Still need to learn how to do that properly 😉

I suspect that clip of the lapel mic was a little muffled just due to the direction the capsule was facing. Still sound great though!

@@ConorFenlon No, actually there is a little dark secret I never got around to exposing in a seperate follow up video: The mic you see me using in all videos since isn't actually the same electret capsule used in this video - just after posting I realized a flaw in my testing method. The generally best sounding mic at a certain distance from my mouth isn't the best sounding when clipped to my shirt, since bass frequencies are a lot more prominent close to my throat than somewhere else. Instead I ended up replacing the microphone head with an identical using capsule #1 that I immediately ruled out in this video. It responds much less to bass frequencies which shifts my voice to a more natural sectrum making it sound less muffled. Sorry for deceiving 😔

Wow, thanks! Glad you like it 😊 I'll definitely look into the wireless lapel mic! I've been using the lavalier for the upcoming video, and the cable really ends up getting in the way, so thanks for suggestion!

@@ChronicMechatronic Yeah, I just use a second really old Android phone to record lavalier mic audio and sync it in editing using the three claps technique..

@@edwardfletcher7790 That's probably the easiest way, though I wanted to avoid the hassle of editing in all the separate audio. I've got two ancient phones lying around, but those are even too old to record usable audio... Nonetheless I'll see if I can make at least some sort of wireless microphone, maybe a handheld one would be nice (although useless).

@@ChronicMechatronic I'm using a 2011 Motorola running Android 4.1. It's much easier to synch audio than you think. Three claps make it easy. I look forward to your future videos !

No, it's the raw sound directly as recorded by the phone. The recording app I used at the time might've had a bit of auto gain, but that's about it
