The is some good cheap options. Mora springs to mind, but there are others.

Excellent pragmatic balanced advice Allan. Being a woodworker I use all sorts cutting edges. Hand forged laminated Japanese chisels, cheap nasty ones for hack work, carbide, high speed steel etc etc. But my camping knives are an opinel no8 and a folding olive wood handled Spanish job. That's all I've got. Laminated carbon alloys can chip and break. Damascus frankly is a bit of a wank. I use a Japanese saw for cutting firewood. Never found a need to split. Exotic cutting edges have their place but the camp-site I don't find is one of them. Hard steels are difficult to sharpen in the field. Sharpening is a skill that many are deficient in and finding good Sharpening stones is a trick in itself. You can use your leather belt as a very handy strop in a pinch.

Spot on mate. Mix of tools is always the best bet. For a long trip in the woods, I would take my British army knife for chopping and splitting because its a beast. Back it up with a Opinel for small tasks and all the bases are covered.

@@frogmaster83 I would like to get my hands on a British army knife. Cudemon makes reasonably priced hunting knives. In Oz it's not worth trying to split dry hard wood. It's to tough or interlocked. My daughter has more knives than I do. She really likes knives. She pinched my opinel when she moved out ! Have to get another one now. Most of the time I use it for slicing open chicken feed bags and cutting bailing twine. It's been accidently washed a few times too. I do prefer the carbon blade to stainless. It holds its edge better. Stainless isn't the best knife steel really. It's a bit of a stodgy edge. Chrome vanadium is far better.

I bought the bushman cold steel last year, thanks to your recommendation. Great bit of kit for the price. Easily clips to your belt too.

Quite a mix of knives you got there, which reminded me of the gaw I won over in the USA, which was a superb knife in it's own leather pouch. I also remember winning a backpack from you, which I still use on overnight hikes to this day, cheers Alan

A great video Allan. Sound advice. Mora's are always talked about as a standard budget bushcraft knife. However the Companion and Basic models are not full tang. Me personally I think for the majority of bush / campcraft tasks, a full tang knife is best suited. In terms of reasonable price and quality i think you can't beat the BPS Knives range. I've got 2 of them - a HK1S which is more of a hunting knife and a B1 which is a dedicated bushcraft knife. Full tang knives, walnut handles and quality leather sheaths.

Nice bit of knife porn to end my utube binge for today. Gutted that pbk one isnt getable anymore. It was a good idea to wrap the handle of the cold steel, I do like those, sturdy knife and ready made spear head :D I had a quick look to see if I could find a pbk and ended up buying a jack pyke savanna and the jack pyke hunters knife set..... I blame you 😝

Its the British army smock. It is one of my issued pieces when I was an instructor for the MTC. Google British army smock in MTP and you will find loads, new and second-hand. 👍

Great video Al. Shows you don't need to spend a fortune. I still use the classic Mora companion. Works great for under £15.
