Rescued a old 318 that was being loaded into a scrap dumpster, didn't know much about them at the time but i saw it had a Onan in it, and had used many gas drive welding machines on welding jobs and the older Onan engined units ran around the clock for weeks without a failure, unlike the Chinesium equipped newer welding machines that constantly puked out, I carefully went through and put the 318 back together, been a reliable old war horse ever since

We had a 318 with the snowblower and cutting deck attachments for 30 years and it was still running strong when we traded it in to get z track. Those Onan engines are bullet proof. I also really liked the hydrostatic transmission and power steering.

Taryl, I used to work in an old car shop and we learned that it's very difficult to find decent points nowadays. Sometimes we'd just take the old points apart and carefully file them clean and flat instead of putting the newer crap points in. I hear a lot of good things about Isavetractors. A little pricey sometimes but they sell quality stuff and that's what we want. Oh by the way, Happy Birthday. Looks like you got a lot of cool junk😂

I love these onans I have 4 machines that run them and probably have a combined 5000 hrs on them, all P motors a couple 224 one 220 and one 218. I've seen issues with them all easy fixes the 220 have the governor issue but I fixed it without removing the cam drill a small hole thru the fingers that hold the balls at an angle into the camshaft and drive a properly sized roll pin . That was about 500hrs ago and it's still running the generator it's on just fine

Very interesting video, I bought my 1983 Bolens eliminator 1700 about 10 years ago. It has a KT 17 Kohler. I used it for many years with the tired engine. after three years of use, I tore it apart and overhauled it with two used pistons, two new exhaust valves, rings and gaskets, spent around $500 and my time to make it right. It is my plow machine. I looked into the ONAN engines, and I am quite happy with my series 2 KT 17 is a beast and it gives me next to no problems! Thanks for being you, Taryl

@TheOzthewiz8 ай бұрын
The old GM vehicles of '60s vintage had those same type of "points". You didn't need a feeler gauge, just turn the allen screw (through the distributor "window") until engine starts to misfire, then turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE about a turn. And there you go, there's YOUR DINNER. GM REALLY did have a "better idea" back then!! Keep these videos coming. I REALLY am learning a lot. THANK YOU!

Really enjoyed this video. I've seen a 318 in the background and have hoped you would some day make a video on it. I have a 89 318 with the p218 engine in it. I have about 500 hours on it and have not had any major problems with it. I am concerned though that new parts are few and far between. Alsp with your series on ethanol, I am worried if I will start having problems with the fuel system. In my area non ethanol is no longer available and the % ethanol is slated to increase from 10% to 15% in the coming years. I am considering getting a tractor with either an EFI or diesel engine. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge of small engines with your viewers. Your tips, tricks and stories are much appreciated.

I was lucky, when I put a Kohler engine on my Murray mower, no one told me it wouldn't work. I knew it would, so I did it. The Briggs has a separate starter solenoid, the Kohler has the solenoid on the starter. I just took the cable off the solenoid used a smaller wire, ran it to the starter and it works fine. Plus i went from 12.5 horsepower to 25. That definitely makes a big difference.

I've been watching the other videos with that 318 just sitting. wondering what's up. I bought a 91 jd318 8years ago, 516hrs for $300. It needed the starter improvement kit and the mower deck was rusted junk. I took all the brackets off the model 46 deck and welded them on a model 47 from a 214. I'm mowing my lawn with a JD Gt 275, I like the foot control better.
