The customer that brought it in didn't realize it had caught fire until this thing was burnt bad and wanted to know if Taryl could bring it back. How much you wanna spend? Taryl can fix ANYTHING if you're willing to spend the ca$hola. Stick around til the end where Taryl comes up with a cheap and effective hillbilly fire alarm incase this issue happens again. So the estimate of the repair AS I STATED IN THE VIDEO was at the high end of the estimate. If I had to replace the starter,battree,regulator,alternator,or any other unforeseen damaged parts it could have been that high. AGAIN the customer is aware of this and they make the final decision on whether to have it repaired or not. Luckily for them it was repaired for a lot less. The final cost was $1175.00. The customer was very pleased.

I picked a free Kubota because the mouse nest under the shroud caught the engine on fire. Melted all the hoses, fuel pump, coil. Also un-seated the valves. Put about $130 into it to get it running again. Had it for the last five years.

Andy having another "I believe I can fly" moment, priceless! Great video guys! Sell that man a seat cover! It is cheap and would hide the seat back. You could tuck the hilbilly smoke alarm inside and preserve that safety feature nicely! Also, some aluminum heat tape would hide the burn spot on the left side and look like it was supposed to be there too. (3M™ High Temperature Aluminum Foil Tape 433)

I’m always amazed at how people will buy expensive equipment and then never service it like it should be. Money comes hard for me and I’ve been accused of being obsessive about maintenance on my cars, trucks, and equipment. I keep meticulous records of all the maintenance and repairs that I have done over the years on my stuff and because of that I can get top dollar on any of my equipment that I decide to sell.

Good Video Taryl. Engine fires on Zero turns can be deadly. Two years ago an 86 year old neighbor had his to catch on fire. Before he could get away from it he was badly burned. He was sent to a burn hospital where he died in less than a week. RIP Hariel Crowder.

hey taryl...you can save the contents of the can with the broken nipple by using an awl in the opening and point it into a container. it'll empty the contents that way allowing you to use it using a brush. there's YOUR dinner. :)

Hey Daryl, Jr., Slippers and Skippy... This burnt mower fix reminds me of a time that MY spare car caught on fire. I would loan it out for months at a time, to help friends out. Whatever, that makes no difference. So my car was on fire and I pulled over to the right shoulder. I attempted to extinguish the fire, but the flames and smoke grew. ...time to start yanking anything of value out! The smoke and fire was really raging. 5 news helicopters were circling, because the freeway was jammed by looky-loos. The smoke cloud was huge and the flames were so tall that I had to move further away. The CHP rolled up, and asked if I wanted him to call the fire department. I said, "Yeah, sure...ask them to bring some marshmallows." The cop smiled.

Yup, retired electrician here. Don't call when your breaker keeps tripping. Don't call when your breaker stops tripping and the front of the panel starts to get hot. Call when you smell something burning. That's when I find out the breaker is now a welding breaker, and the insulation has burned off the wire up to the end of the cable where it enters the panel.

Well contaminated oil is a carcinogenic. It can cause health issues. Mechanics tan can be kind of nasty too. That black dirt in the cracks of skin that never comes out.

I was a caretaker for a ranch and the owner used an old L100 until the spindles started to go and the deck started to rust out. His son bought him a new D100 but after a time it bogged down in some high grass, caught on fire and was destroyed. I found the old L100 in pretty bad disrepair, but with some reinforcement rings, new spindles, blades and other various repairs got it working again. The owner bought the L100 in 2004, and even though it's the old style splash lubricated (no oil filter) it continues to run to this day and I just used it to clear the grass around my property. It's like the Energizer Bunny👍.

As long as you keep fresh oil in it *that can still be splashed* you will do well. There's some that neglect oil changes but just add more to bring it up on the dipstick and then wonder why it lasts only 5-7 years. Well, that oil just got dirtier and dirtier, thicker, sludgier, so much so that the dipper just couldn't sling it around anymore and it was resistant to flow. Death to the engine will come prematurely.

Harbor Freight fuel hose pliers are excellent for the marine boating jobs as well. Some of that boating stuff is twice as difficult to access as the lawn equipment or automotive situations.

But, I beg to differ on the insurance. I have n j m insurance and they told me that mowers are covered under personal property of a home owner's policy. Always blow your lawn equipment off after each use with your leaf blower. And make sure you blow your engine finned cylinder head area off to make sure your engine can cool properly. In the fall when the leaves are dry, they can defiantly be a fire hazard. Taryl's video sure made that abundantly clear. Great stuff Taryl.

@@1pcfred The hole in your plan is that green grass isnt going to burn that good...so if its FRESH grass...it's not a problem. If you blow off the FRESH GRASS before you store your mower away or AFTER you mow...there is no grass to wilt and then catch fire. Go try to burn some green grass for me.

Winter is for getting your equipment repaired, running right, and ready for the mowing season. I never have any issues with my equipment during the winter partially because grass and weeds never stop growing down in the deep south so it gets ran all year round.

Hi Taryl N.O.P.E. is so apt. So many problems could be stopped with a bit of simple after using maintenance. Lube hedge trimmer blades as they may stick after cutting sticky greenery. Clear the crap around a chainsaws discharge area and add extra lube if you've been cutting resinous material, as I had a chainsaw oiling mech stop working because it was gummed up. Maybe a series on simple after work maintenance ?😁

On connecting wires like you did, solderstick makes a connector that looks kinda like a butt connector. It has a clear body. In the center there is a solder strip. Slide your stripped wires in from each side. Use heat from a lighter or heat gun to melt the solder. As you do this the body shrinks and has a water proof seal at each end. Does everything at one step.

Hey Taryl! I have owned my John Deere since 2006. It is always in the shed when it is not in use. Why knuckle heads leave power equipment outside is beyond me! I am with you on cleaning the mower after each use. I always use my leaf blower and blow off everything top to bottom and make sure fluffy doesn't have any extra debris to build his nest anywhere. A little extra time spent cleaning after each use, makes things last longer. And another thing, wash your equipment at least once a year grass rats! Take pride with your hard earned dollars you spend on this stuff!!

You made have made a video already on a decompression valve. I have a 25 hp break then scrapem that’s hard starting and turning over. Seen single cylinder cam replacement. Is this the same on a twin? I did adj the valves and is a bit better. Wondering about decompression… thanks!!!

Taryl good work on that mower. I wouldn't have the patience to deal with that amount of repair for sure. One question for you though, with the heat on that engine isn't the crank seal under the flywheel a concern? I would think that seal could have potentially melted or deformed as well as the lower crank seal too. Just a thought. This video is a good reminder that keeping your equipment clean is worth the time.

Oh yes-I have had “muffins” ignite leaves and when I was finishing mowing a lawn near dusk with a B7S motored mower-that muffin was glowing and blue flames coming out of the muffin-this was like 40 hrs ago. Moved the mower and stomped out the flames. Then finished wetting the area with a hose. Also have had B&S motor burn up-the local mower shop rebuilt it! Ran like new!

Talking about idiots , My neighbor who is not all there kept putting oil in the mower each time he mowed the lawn and it smoked the whole neighbor and I told hem just check the oil once in a while but he kept doing it any way. When you open the oil cap oil just blew out but he thought you had to keep putting oil in it. The only time he cut the grass in was a foot tall and he asked me why it kept stalling. And I said too much oil and too tall grass. The HOA gave him 10 tickets which added up to 900 dollars. Then one day I heard a loud noise, and he blew up the mower which was only about 6 month old. They finally moved to a different state.

Those hose pliers are great! Mustie1 showed them a few years back and I immediately ran out and got me a set of 3. Anyone who works on equipment of any kind need a set.

I have the crimp connector kit that is also heat shrink for male,female, and butt connectors. This makes it easier than soldering. I do still occasionally solder with an iron if neeeded.

I always blow off my Ferris after each use. I park inside, so no leaf issue, but I have found that fluffy is much less likely to build a nest in the engine if she doesn't have a bunch of perfectly cut grass laying on the deck, just a foot away.
