Dear Tartyl, from a guy that has rebuilt many car and racing magnetos. The points are probably where the difference is and the difference in cost. Chinese points will probably have Tungsten points, the US made points will be Platinum Iridium. So what is the difference? Platinum points will not pit and pile with reversing current and tungsten points will still work but will erode much more quickly. Platinum also has a much higher oxidization resistance. We had to spend 1000's each year getting platinum Iridium points discs made and I developed a process to silver solder the new discs on. Magneto points must still be available because small aircraft engines still use points magnetos. Tungsten is a grey color and Platinum is more of a yellow color. When I was doing them the discs were about $30 each so $60 per set.

Good observation on the material difference. I would figure that the price difference would be on the manufacturing process and materials used. Then again, nowadays the parts could be exactly the same and the company just upcharge due to its brand to make money lol. And yes, small aircraft engines still uses the old style mags with points. Mainly because of FAA regulations since no modifications can be made from original equipment. If you do said modifications, or other upgrades, you’ll have to fill out appropriate paperwork like the STCs and whatnot. Hell, we even still use the old updraft marvel schebler carburetors on the engines. The system is reliable, simple and somewhat forgiving which is quite critical while being in the air. And the fact that the mags with points have its own way to generate electrical energy and provide spark, this is a sure way to keep the engine running during a electrical power loss like a dead battery or failed charging system.

Ready with the tiller mounted for spring garden tilling. Ive always set my points just by the sound and responsiveness of the engine. It has always worked for me whether its right or wrong IDK.

I had the predecessor to the 318, a 317 powered by a Kohler with points. John Deere quickly realized the 17 hp Kohler wasn’t made for lawn tractor duty and switched to the 18 hp Onan. That’s what I put in my tractor to replace the Kohler when it blew up. I always had trouble with the points on the Kohler. They would constantly get dirt accumulating in the box that covered the points. The Onan replacement motor came with solid state ignition and I never had a problem with the ignition again. Other improvements over the Kohler was higher oil capacity and a filter. The Onan just worked better.

i always preferred the John Deere 322 if i was to get a gasser in this frame size, the onan always seemed like it needed all the maintenance when the yanmar gas and diesel would be the ones you would never see in the shop because they always worked. the 332 being the diesel variant would often times need work to the glowplug control timer but otherwise are mowers running in which i never see because i know they are out there but rarely break down.

Another thing you can do with that shorter spring is just put one or two little washers above it.. which will make it compress a bit more and make it stronger; it should still have plenty range of motion to still work correctly.

I Taryl. I found that the cheap points have a dimensional problem with the point spring making contact with the frame of the points. When the points open the flat spring comes close enough to short on the frame. Took me a while to figure it out. Some of the points say "remco" ( I think it was) and they seemed more like OEM. Happy wrenching!

Taryl, I’m sure you know this, but if you didn’t know- Onan used to be its own company. They used to make all their own engines and generators. They were acquired by Cummins and a that’s why a lot of the Onan parts are hard to find and expensive. Seems Cummins doesn’t care much about Onan, even though they make a really stout engine and generator. They were the best for decades

I always use OEM if I can find and afford them. Onan parts are not cheap but they are made specifically for there engines. I have had problems with aftermarket points sets falling apart and shorting out. I've had a few that the contacts actually welded together which overheated the spring and took the temper out of it. Most aftermarket points have some sort of softer steel contacts instead of Carbon steel contacts.

It's just an electronic ignition module in the shape of a condenser to make it easy to fit on most cases where the capacitor was bolted to the coil clamp. It should reduce the wear of the points because it runs a smaller current through them, the spark should be somewhat stronger too. The light makes it easy to adjust the timing without external tools but I don't like the idea of such a big light, if I had to use one I think I would paint most of the translucent side with black "liquid electrical tape" leaving only a tiny hole for the light.

What about the thickness and quality of the plating on the contacts? Should be cadmium plated. That will affect how long they'll last. Also the quality of the material that rubs on the cam? You have no real way to measure the difference of those important aspects in your fine shop. Springs because they're made of metal become more brittle over time. It's why we find broken springs. They're only going to work for so many cycles before they become work hardened enough to finally snap. Armed with this knowledge is it really a good idea to used the spring in your old points? I know, I know, one could argue about the quality of springs coming from Chynah, and you would have a good point, so it's a toss up.. Just food for thought.

The composition of the actual contacts might not be the same. I have a Wisconsin TJD with a magneto and changed out some old points that still worked fine. The new points if the engine sits for a few months you have to use some 1K grit sandpaper on the points to get spark at the plugs. Cheap junk IMHO. Had an aircraft mechanic tell me this is not uncommon in aftermarket Chinese point sets.

I bought a set of points for my '67 Larson Eagle snow machine with a 9 horse JLO engine in it. They were made in China. I put them in and gapped them and the thing would not start. I tested them with a continuity tester and they failed. Completely useless. I cleaned up the old ones put 'em back in. Never bought snowmobile parts from them again.

I use a dollar bill to clean points, they are printed on non fraying paper.

I've had the same problem with points in my car. You think they're clean but they're not🤔🤨

grouse video content there Taryl Dactal mate and yep a good difference in these points and condenser and yep the differences are well the differ between the real deal and of course cheap as Chinese garbage for sure in this case even on those dud spark plugs we have over here by comparisons which are Torch and Denso type which are poor qaulity plus it does not fire up a engine for sure from what i have noticed and even on our 2 stroke Victa P/T (Power Torque) and other forms of outdoor power equipment we have over here too and yep my mate who also lives in NSW (New South Wales) will agree with me too as we both hate em for sure but yeah your video is a good top notch one on those famous farmers tools known as John Deere 🦌and yep no kidding either and i,d happily use their stuff any time for sure if i was offered a test run for sure and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🌳🌏🇦🇺 or the land down under to your area and i hope your keeping toasty during your annual Winter/Flu Season too.
