I like the 996 as much as the next guy, but they are not even close. The 15 year difference shows everywhere.

Oh don’t get me wrong, the 981 is the better car. But is it about $20K - $30K better and that is where I think the 996.1 is the better value. Now if I had a 981 Cayman S in my garage I wouldn’t be thinking of trading it for a 996. The only reason to consider that would be for th back seats or the cable driven throttle body, but outside of that of money is no object then the Cayman S is the clear winner. @@madfemurfast you never know when a good deal may come your way, and perhaps in another ten years the 981 will be more affordable than the 996. Life is kind of crazy that way.

I'm debating If I should get a 996.2 CS or a 997.1/2 CS or a 981 S. They're prices are very alike.

That’s a tough choice. Of those the 981 S is probably the best car, but a 997.2 will hold its value best from this options. The best would be to try and arrange a few test drives to see which you like best from the driving experience as the 981 does drive a bit different from a 996 or 997. The 996 wouldn't see which way the Cayman went after a few bends and dynamically the 911 isn't even close.

Not close really, the 981 Cayman is very, very good from a driving, gear box and engine perspective.

I'd take the 996 (manuel of course) and use the extra $20K or so to immediately start modding for performance and exterior... I'd get basically the same performance bits I currently have on my 02, 3.2 liter 986 Boxster S including the Fabspeed Exhaust, headers (catless) Evolve CAI, IPD Plenum, Throttle body, H&R lowering springs, Bilstein performance shocks etc... then move to the exterior with a 996/997 GT3 cup car body kit, BBS Sport Classic rims (silver)... So yeah basically the same mods. And people are crazy or just following the herd when it comes to the look of the original 996/986 headlights... they are super sleek especially if you get the clear lense aftermarket ones like I do. Just look at the Porsche GT1 Lemans car... I think its literally "the" best looking super/hyper/racing car ever let alone Porsche, luv it! 😁
