Pete always finds the best in games. He engages with them on their own terms, totally absent prejudice, so he sees things others tend to miss because they aren't on the same wave length as the designers. I love when he makes videos like this because I think we can learn a lot from his perspective

You probably already know this, but as of today (May 7th 2021) Baldur's Gat Dark Alliance is available on Xbox One and PS4 (and X/S + PS5 via backwards compatibility). I played the whole initial sewer rats level this morning with a frozen smile on my face. I can't wait to play it again co-op with the same friend of mine whom I played it with 20 years ago on PS2. (I also own the original Xbox version, but it doesn't look as good as the PS2 version, I guess it's better optimized on PS2)

I was 6 years old, and my dad grabbed a handful of ps2 games to give me for Christmas. He didn’t quite understand video games and what to pick out for girls. Ephemeral Fantasia was one of them. I never got past the second time loop, but I loved every second of it. The music was beautiful, every house you went into was different, and even if you were too intimidated to fight the monsters, the cutscenes alone were beautiful enough to entertain you for hours, just by wandering into a random bar. Also I don’t remember what they were called, but it was super fun getting those chick/peeps that would assist you in battle.

I have such memories with Dark Cloud (and 2). When I was 12, my grandmother had a stroke and wasn't quite the same afterwards. She couldn't think straight and would just buy us random games for Christmas and birthdays every year. One year, she shows up with a ton of Game Boy Advance games, and just two PS2 games that my sister and I had never heard of. One was Ratchet and Clank. The other was Dark Cloud. One of many times my grandmother would pick amazing games, some of the best the system had to offer completely at random. My friend Dan lived in the same building as her. He'd also never heard of this game. For a while, she would ask him for recommendations if our Christmas and birthday lists didn't eat up all of her budget. The first year after the stroke, she bypassed him completely. He was crushed when he tried Dark Cloud. It meant that the nice old lady downstairs no longer needed his help finding amazing games. Incidentally, another game she did that with was Final Fantasy X. She said she saw it on the shelf at Game Crazy and thought "This game's pretty," and grabbed it.

Oh, and for anyone out there looking for other cool PS2 RPGs that aren't too expensive, Tsugunai: Atonement is really fun. Turn based combat, but with a parry mechanic that rewards good timing. Wild Arms 3 sat on my shelf for more than ten years before I got around to playing it. It's an alright game. Still have saved files for Balder's Gate from back when I first bought it brand new. You definitely know your stuff when it comes to these games. I like how you're able to go in depth with each one, as opposed to other videos that just throw titles in a list with a generic "great game - play it!" summation. One thing I think worth mentioning is that if anyone picks up Xenosaga Episode 1 and enjoys it, and maybe wants to try out 2 and 3, they should know that those games are getting to be very expensive. The 2nd one is definitely shooting up in price (despite being worse than the first one, from what I've heard, I haven't played it), and 3 has been $100+ for a long time. It's kind of a shame, as I like Episode 1 quite a bit, and wouldn't mind checking out the rest, but I just can't justify shelling out that much money for them.
