In this video I install intermediate steering shaft bushings from EMF on my 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins. Quick $20 fix for loose sloppy steering that the Dodge trucks are known for.

I just put these in yesterday and it did take out about half of the slop. Worth $20 to me. I'm going to try to adjust the steering box next.

Don't adjust the steering box. If your 2nd gen is a 4x4, swap to t steering. 98-99 3500 comes with t steering and is a direct swap.

@@513dra if you need any additional information, feel free to ask me. I've tried everything, 1 part at a time, until I solved the sloppy steering and death wobble. I replaced the trac bar, that helped Replaced the bearing where the steering shaft comes through, by the brake master cylinder with a rubber grommet and that helped with the slop but not the wobble. Installed aluminum bushings in the steering shaft at the floor inside the cab, that helped with the slop but not the wobble Replaced all parts of the y steering and it lasted about 6 months Installed a red head gearbox and that did nothing, still had wobble and slop Tried heims links and an adjustable trac bar, death wobble got worse Swapped to T steering and that with the combination of bushings/grommet on the steering shaft made my 97 2500 drive like a sports car. Don't waste your time or money on any other parts. The 3500 steering parts are thicker/stronger. I've been running it for over a year and all parts are still solid. Tie rod posts are same size so no drilling the knuckles and bolts right up. Hope this helps

Adding these on my '15 with 380k miles this week. Someone put gray silicone on mine sometime before I bought it 4 years ago. I Have some small annoying clunks. You say a mm or two in play? That is a dangerous amount. I'd say 1/2 mm would add up to a noticeable wander. Thanks for the video.

Mine is doing the same thing. It didn't really look like it corrected anything. The u joint down by the steering box is probably shot like mine is. Ordering a new lower steering shaft.

Should be top of your gear box it will have a bolt with a Allen head and a 5/8s lock nut around it you have to back that nut off and then tighten the Allen head bolt do a 1/4 turn at a time if you over tighten you will destroy your gear box so take the time to check the play in the wheel as go and you should be good keep you ears open for any grinding noise or crunch that means you went to far 👍

Very old thread but possibly this part was replaced upside down? My 2006 doesn’t have those it has them down by the steering rack like other KZbin videos I’ve seen. Any update since then? Thanks

The steering shaft hasn’t been replaced ever, still the original. Looked up new replacement steering shaft and it’s the same as mine. Has a joint in the cab and one closer to the steering box.

Haha! Yes but use a c-clamp as a press. Remember, every action requires a reaction so you be hammering essentially on the steering shaft bearings/bushings.

curious question. I have this exact issue with my 2008 ram 1500 5.7. It has to much play to the right when im driving. Does this issue cause it to also pull to the right? Cause thats also something im experiencing. Just FYI. Ive already changed out my entire front entire from control arms to sway link bars to tie rods etc. And Ive done two alignments. Im just now learning about the steering column stuff and was curious if thats whats possible causing my pull.
@boosthuntergarage
@boosthuntergarage Ай бұрын
I’ll start off by saying I’m not a professional mechanic but I would think the looseness in the steering column wouldn’t make it consistently pull to the right. It would be sloppy both ways but wouldn’t hurt to try. The only thing I can think of if you have already changed all the front end parts and had alignments would be the condition of your tires. I know if one is worn more then others it will cause it to pull. But getting the slop out of the steering column definitely wouldn’t hurt.

Check your front brakes after driving for awhile. I had my brake calipers hanging up due to deteriorating brake lines. If your right side is hotter than the left that’s a good sign that the caliper is dragging.

You can add a small hose clamp to help secure it. All that bushing is doing is filling the void of the peg. What a weird design by dodge
@boosthuntergarage
@boosthuntergarage 10 ай бұрын
Definitely a weird design. Didn’t have a hose clamp at the time but I’ll most likely put one on
@thewayidoit8895
@thewayidoit8895 10 ай бұрын
It might be a damper design but more likely a part of a crash design. Back in the 60's O believe they started making crushable steering shafts as head on crashes were forcing steering wheels into the driver chest. Since then the steering shaft safety evolution has become a real rube goldberg.
