A dethatcher would be a good attachment to have for clearing leaves or light gravel work but as a senior citizen on a budget the landscape rake is invaluable. Next in line would be a box blade, and then a tiller. I maintain a quarter mile gravel lane coming back to our home and the landscape rake and box blade are worth their weight in gold. I also have a tiller which is near and dear to my heart. There isn't any job around here that I can't accomplish with these 3 attachments. I also have a set of bolt on pallet forks that I use once in a while which are great for what I do with them. I would probably invest in a set of quick attach forks if I needed them more. I thank you for your great and informative videos. I watch the new ones every day. Your channel and TTWT are the ones that made me realize that I needed a tractor of my own in the first place. I know this is an older post but going to share for anyone that may have a rock problem. I just purchased a County Line 5' lawn rake. Didn't have time to wait for a shipped tool. I needed to remove vegatation roots and debris that I excavated form the site, and rocks form baseball to bowling ball size. A few fellas said it wouldn't work and the rake would just roll over the rocks. They were about 95% wrong. I had trenched a gas and water line through the area and the site turned out to be a rock garden I guess. The rake worked awesome and if I pulled slow it collected most of the rocks big and small. A few rolled under the rake but most were picked. Pulled them and the debris downslope to form a row and then scooped with the FEL. So I found the rake does do a good job on rocks if you take your time and I added to 50lb sandbags on the implement to hold down pressure. As for the gravel driveway I didn't like it. I have a land plane and find it to be a much better tool. Spreads and gredes and doesn't leave those winrows on each side as I pull b/c the gravel is boxed in the sled. For leaves in NE Ohio there's nothing like the Cyclone rake. Cheers!

On a landscape rack I’ve learned that your top link adjustment affects how aggressive it digs. If the top link is retracted it’s much more gentle and more aggressive when extended. The exact opposite of a box blade adjustment. I used my rake to clean up after a tree had been cut on my lawn it worked very well with little to no damage after I retracted the top link. As you said soil conditions do play a factor as well.

Yeah, I've got the hydraulic top link on the 2038r, so I adjusted it in this video. Didn't make much of a difference. Ground was too soft, easy to cause damage. Not the landscape rakes fault, just a limitation.

That was a definitive WOW for me. I expected that landscape rake to do way better at the leaf collection than it did. I have always thought they would be better for leveling off gravel but I expected that to do better on leaves too. I guess the de-thatcher is a go. Another day, another lesson. Have had the 5 foot Dirt Dog Landscape Rake with the wheel kit for a couple of years now and agree 100% that it's awesome! Very easy to adapt to whatever "heavy" or "light" raking job you have with the optional wheels helping avoid "digging in" on some of those lawn or light gravel grading jobs. Better than either rear blade or box blade by a mile for the regular lawn and drive maintenance. Just have to be careful backing up to avoid hitting the wheel axle/post if they are down... But easy enough to just raise the wheels up or take 'em off temporarily if you need to dig down and dirty.

I use a 72 inch landscape rake to pull weeds out of the water and groom the beach. I did a little better after adding the wheel kit. Mirrors helped a lot by helping me see how deep I was getting. In sand I spin out as soon as the rake starts to dig then I have holes to deal with. I dropped the rake on the unused portion of a shared crushed stone shared drive the neighbor was trying to back drag with his bucked. The rake not only pulled most of the small weeds but did a great job of leveling the drive. It was much easier to use on the stone than sand.

I got a Cyclone Rake just this year, which is like a powered tow behind bagger with suction from the mower deck, and I would never want to do leaves on the lawn any other way again. Single pass and every leaf is gone, I mean every leaf. Also got the optional hand held vac hose and it works great on flower beds and leaf piles and inside the pool fence. The thing is phenomenal. Too late for me, but maybe you could consider doing a discount with them or just collaborate? Just an idea. They seem to be a great American made company. I think they are family owned too.

I got a spot in my yard where it's nothing but oak trees and old stumps which makes it hard to get around. Here in Missouri it is so rocky and I have a hard enough time just mowing it with a zero turn. The other problem is it's on a hill. At times my wheels hit a good size rock and next thing you know the mower blades hit that rock. Last year I blew the leaves and of course the wind was blowing the wrong way but after a few days finally got them to an opening to where I could mulch them.

I have what the dealer called a pine straw rake - very similar to the dethatcher rake in your video. I use it for dethatching and loosening up matted leaves on my lawn and driveway. Being in New England, my area does not have terrain like you're showing. We have hills and rocks - some small, some tough to deal with. Neither rake would help with leveling or smoothing out the gravel on my 800 ft driveway. Too many large nuggets buried slightly below the gravel. Managing the 3PH position over the ups & downs of my drive is almost impossible.

So I've been thinking about my dethatcher for awhile. I was really excited to buy it but the build quality for 600 bucks is a bit weak. The tines are held together by washers that you're supposed to bend which is fine if it worked well but the tines always get loose. I don't know how well it works with clean up compared to a rake which is a bit more aggressive on lawns so your mileage may vary. However it's also probably not the best dethatcher. You're obviously doing this on larger lawns but if that's the case you probably don't have a golf course lawn and you're probably better off getting a power rake or tiller with dethatch tines. I don't know, I think it's a bit weak for a steep price of 600

Lot of meat in your post... I've used a dethatcher rake for years and sold them too. I don't have reports of tines always getting loose. I've never actually had to tighten a tine back down. Do you own a dethatcher? You don't know how well it works with clean up compared to a rake...I compare how they clean up in this video, so that should clarify that It's not the best dethatcher...but then you mention getting a power rake or tiller with dethatch tines. The power rakes I know would destroy a lawn. I'm not sure what a tiller with dethatch tines is. However, both of those options sound like they are many times more expensive than the dethatcher.

@@GoodWorksTractors yeah I own the cmp dethatcher and their method in the instructions of tightening until washer bends a little is a bit cheap feeling. The tiller with dethatcher is a common attachment for tillers depending on which one you own (like the hand held one's) and acts similar to the electric greenworks ones but it's gas and not corded. Power rake might not have been correct terminology Edit: as far as landscape vs cmp it's dependent on yard quality and what you're picking up. Your video addresses this. I used both. Landscape rake just has ability to sweep so much more in one pass but if your yard is high quality you don't want to use that method. Just depends is all. At the end of the day I'm disappointed by the build quality on a 600 dollar tool. It's 4 small square tubes bolted together (shipped disassembled) with cheap 10 cent washers. Does it work? Yeah sure but it's quality is disappointing. I imagined the base would be all welded together.

Hey Courtney I’ve found my landscape rake works great on my 2025R on my trails in the woods for keeping the noise down while sneaking out out to my deer blind but found 60D MMM works really well for just blowing and mowing leaves as long as you are blowing them all in the same direction. I would love to get a 3 point blower but the prices on all of them are very high! Would you have any recommendations?

thoughts on which would be better in a horse pastor, I don't want to rip the pastor up but its also not like a finished yard. I want to collect or break up & spread the horse manure. thoughts on the best option. I'm leaning towards the rake but do own a set of harrows so it might be just as close to rake. any suggestions or things I might not be thinking of would be helpful. love the channel.

re: going forwards and backwards with the dethatcher..the manufacturers docs specifically say to only use it in the "forward" direction. If you tighten down the bolts enough, it will probably be ok going backwards but the way that the tines are held in place is designed to resist force only in the forward direciton. Just fyi.

One rake is used before you have a lawn, the other after you have a thick dry lawn best n spring time to promote root growth. Landscape rake is for dirt. Never grass

I just got done with leaf cleanup, I just angle the loader at about 45 degrees and backdrag on float, it gets 90% of the leaves in one pass. in spots where you want it perfect just go back with a blower, make windrows and drag them off.

I have dead ash trees (is that redundant) and when you bring them down, the small branches shatter like they are made of glass. After removing the large sections and the limbs from my lawn, would the de thatcher work for cleaning up the smaller twigs?

Hello and how are you. I have a landscape rake for the back of my big tractor. It worked very well at pulling the heavy leafs and sticks into a pile. However, it tore lots of topsoil up as I was going over the ground to try and get a little more leafs. I just bought a lite pine straw rake to put on my sub compact tractor. Going to try that this weekend. It would be nice if there was a scale rating on these type of attachments as to how "aggresive" they are. Be it a scale from 1-5 or 1-10

With all your trees, either a PTO or turbine blower might be a better solution for those leaves. Also, you might want to discuss having tires on the landscape rake. Far better control.

Yeah, I could just use my Protero material collection system too. This was more about highlighting these specific tools in various applications. Wheels would make a difference on turf damage. I don't think it would improve the amount of leaves picked up though?

I think the dethatcher might need front/bucket-mount design too. At the price I just wonder if some front-loader mount might offer more capabilities for the dethather, though I'm no business-man so IDK if it would sell or at what price. My use of a dethatcher: I had let the lawn overgrow to shade itself & harbor more moisture but now I have loose-runners(not secured to the soil with roots) all over the yard, even with a low 2 setting on a BX with a bagger. Next week temperatures drop here in zone-9 to support planting winter-rye to keep the St-Augustine-lawn an active-green color. Having a smooth-lawn in the winter allows the natural-wind to blow my leaves into the side-yard-drainage-swales where they get moist & stop moving around.

The weight of the loader is significant. It would add a lot of down pressure. Trying to manage loader height to minimize downpressure and follow the contour of the surface would be tough. Adding gauge wheels might be an option, but increases the cost and likely would require a much more robust design. CMP does offer a zero turn dethatcher...perhaps that could be modified to be mounted to the front frame of a tractor, but not the loader.

Neither the dethatcher nor the landscape rake do nearly as good a job as a box blade or a land plane for the driveway maintenance. I bought a box blade. I don't need to use it often, but it does great when I need it. I have also used it in taming rough ground, once I have most of the rocks, stumps and sticks out of the way.

I don’t think I would ever used one of those landscape rakes for raking my yard. A bit too too aggressive. And the dethatcher works but a back pack and or pto driven tractor blower would work so much better on leaves in my opinion.

I've had great results spreading coarse gravel with a landscape rake. I should think it would work well for wood chips also. I don't have a dethatcher, so I can't really offer an informed opinion about how it would work.

Hey how do you go backwards with the CMP w/o the tines twisting forward? I never tried it that way on leaves, but when dethatching and I tried going backwards, that's what happened to some of tines on mine. I had to loosen the screw holding the affected tine, reposition it, retighten. But I do like using that dethatcher a lot, and learned about it on your channel. Oh and brother you got a gorgeous property there btw, love it!

If I need to go backwards, I'll raise the three-point hitch so the tines are off the ground and "vertical" - then lower the three point-hitch and reverse. I do the same thing - raise & lower - before moving forward. I initially had several tines rotate out of place. on mine. Re-tightening all of the tine bolts after a few uses seems to have locked them all in place. Those that initially rotated - flattening the washers seems to have helped, as well.

I also had a bunch of the tines get loose after using the dethatcher in reverse. Honestly it’s pretty frustrating given the price of this attachment. I have replaced the original fender washers with “thick” fender washers in hopes that the thicker washers will not bend and deflect as much, therefore will not allow the tines to come out of place. I do like the dethatcher, but I wouldn’t recommend it until CMP makes some simple updates.

These do work OK and you have leaf pushers. How about doubling down with the snow pusher? These work wonders and makes it easier to justify buying one with the finance committee.

I think a pusher would work well for deep leaves or moving piles. However, I think it would leave a lot of base layer in place on the ground.

Yeah, I did a video years ago on one. Very cool tools for sure. The Sweep-All has a rotary boom too with a big collection hopper.

Just not seeing the practicality. The dethatcher just gobbles up too quickly and easy. Granted, it's the cat's meow for spring cleanups and getting the matted down leaves out of the lawn and shuffled on top fir easy cleanup with mowing. The landscape rake of course, is just too aggressive, of course. Can you please show your pine straw rake in these leaves? I don't remember from my own experience, but I believe the taller stand of the tines allow more material to be gathered and pulled. And of course, as always, great video!!

I don't sell pinestraw rakes, but have read many threads suggesting they are too aggressive. The dethatcher clogs, but still works very well. No, it doesn't get every last leaf. However, this was also a worst case scenario. Deep piles of leaves, moisture sticking to the ground and did that good of a job in 5-10 minutes for that area. Let it dry out for a day or two and one more clean up pass, no biggie. It's about enhancing value. I'm surprised you don't think it did well. I was very happy with the results. A super cheap tool that does so much. You don't need every last leaf gone until every leaf is off the trees. Even then, they will blow around all winter. Easy work sitting on a tractor, haha!
