if you're thinking of doing this do yourself a favor and just buy a harbor freight gun and buy the paint by the gallon saves alot of money plus you can add hardener to the paint makes it glossy. I do this on my off-road vehicles last quite some time!!!

I did this to a Neon, and a Dodge Stealth. The Stealth is this same color, and went over a black primer, and it took 10 cans of paint to do the whole car. Looked great. As this guy said, about 4 years later, it started to flake and chip....the primer is still good though...its a good, regular automotive primer, sprayed in a booth. So at $4.77/can, the Stealth cost me $47.70 plus tax....and the $80 for the primer, but you dont have to use that primer, I just did. Coverage was fine, no tiger striping on either car, everything looked great.
@GordonGreenCincinnati
@GordonGreenCincinnati 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe I missed it and you went over it in the video but I’m wondering why you guys did not use any primer this time
@JamesDguy
@JamesDguy 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t always use primer because the advanced formula bonds really well along with the other rustoleum products. I have done it for over 11years and haven’t had issues with flaking or chipping (unless it’s not properly sanded). It’s not always needed unless you are doing a different color on say for example the bumper being blue, fender is pink and door is red. You would want them all to match prior to paint being laid down or it might look really weird and different shades when the final paint is done. Prime it all grey or red or whatever and the top coat will be a different color. Hope that makes sense.

I'm putting my eg on a homemade wooden tip over jig, and sand blasting it. I want to paint the underbody. I want to use rustoleum primer and paint, thinned with acetone and using enamel hardener. Would this be tough enough for an underbody or will it chip too easily ? I will be using truck bed liner over it in the high impact areas. The reason for painting the underbody in the first place is because I'm doing a full restomod build with a seam welded chassis.

Honestly if doing under the car coating i would get it all cleaned and properly prepped then use Raptor Liners Acid Primer and Bed Line it and it won't chip and will prevent rust better than rustoleum. Im not sponsored by rustoleum i just like their products but Raptor Liner Primer is WAYYYY better and proven to not let rust grow and bonds better than Rustoleum. For these basic paint jobs like this one in the video i prefer just Rustoleum primer but if you are to Bedline over base metal use raptor line you won't regret it.

@@JamesDguy thank you sir. Will be doing exactly that. I need to purchase their products. I didn't even know about that stuff looks like I'm doing my floorboards, and high contact areas of my roll cage with that stuff too lol. Thanks again. I think I'm only doing the engine bay and the exterior with rustoleum oil based enamel. Should I clear ?

tip for all of you, if u spray paint like his brother on 2:40, there sometimes will be drops of paint, take short breaks after putting on paint and then do more.

Another banger! If you ever get around to answering this question that would be dope. What would be my choices for an enamel bonding clear coat. I tried 2k clear over my rustoleum protective enamel and it wasnt pretty.

I am not sure i only use 2K speedokote and Spray Max 2k clear. I actually never had these issues but i think its because i do it 5-10mins after its dry then hit it but rustoleum Advanced formula seems to never react even if i wait a week or 2. Wet sanding it key though

It might be because the paint was already cured. Maybe if I reshoot it and start over and clear right after with the 2k clear it would work?

I love your rattle can videos, it’s actually why I subscribed. Especially when you 2k clear them. (CRV). However, on this one I think I’d have gone factory paint job. Have you seen the prices on Bring A Trailer? EF’s are only going to increase in value. Enjoy your/his car, but if you go to sell it there may money left on the table.

Yea we aren't in it for the money though. He got it for $1,100 and as it sits easily worth $2,500 minimum. Runs strong and looks good. Once we do door jambs and such it could be worth more to the right person. I get what your saying though. We aren't into the whole lets price gouge people kinda thing. Make a little profit sure thing but not screw people outta money.

Just curious why you guys don't use 2k with all of these jobs?
@JamesDguy
@JamesDguy 3 жыл бұрын
That’s on average around $100 more for each job and no one sells it local due to it being on “back order” but this one won’t need it for what we are doing. Also I have seen it last 4+ years without clear with no issues so not too worried about it. If it needs redone in a few years that still cheaper and easier than waiting on a body shop and paying thousands for the chance to pull out and get into a wreck because someone isn’t paying attention.
