I always purchase the cheap and “ugly” ones because I love giving them a proper home

In my experience with bettas, the cheaper they are they longer they lived. The really cheap ones seem to be veiltails, which have been around forever so they come from healthier stock, despite being underage in he store. The fancier the betta, the more inbred they are as most of those differences in colors/finnage result from mutations that are bred to each other to build up stock as well as to get them to breed true. Also, because they cost more, I have a feeling the fancier bettas are overbred to keep up demand, since most people are like "ooh... pretty..." when they see the more expensive bettas. As for me, give me an old school veiltail! I had one that was HUGE and he lived to be 5 years old! Which sadly seems to be old for a betta. Most of mine lived 3, 4 years. And these were Petco bettas.

I think there has been a few unofficial studies on this, and from what I've seen, "exotic" Bettas and anything other than veil tails have shorter lives. I've also seen long finned kois live the shortest on average, and that is heavily believed to do thanks to inbreeding.

The female dumbo betta at PetSmart where I live was around 18/19 dollars. The same fish at one of our local stores was being sold at $9.99. So explore the smaller pet stores as well.

Great video….i buy my bettas at pet o and have never had an issue with short lives and breed them successfully. I’ve always thought the price difference was due to the harder to get versions such as the koi you showed I’ve seen for upwards of $50 at local fish stores.

In Australia, Bettas are currently starting at AU$19 (about US$12) and go up to AU$50 with way less selection available. Still, I can't wait to get a big enough tank to keep one again!

I have two tanks with 6 female bettas. Originally my intention was to have a betta sorority in my 55-gallon, but I found that the more expensive koi bettas were more muscular and aggressive to smaller females, so I moved the smaller ones to a 29-gallon to hang with frogs and neons while the koi got harlequin rasboras, rainbow praecox and yoyo loaches to swim with. Having two tanks was convenient as when I got an aggressive smaller betta I put it in with the koi and it calmed down rather than bully fish they couldn't win against. While most of my bettas came from fish stores, I have felt bad to Petco bettas and rescued them. Of 3 I purchased at one time, one died right away and only one survives now, 3 months later. They went into fully cycled, well planted tanks, so overstocking wasn't the problem. Stewing in a cup for however long I would guess is the problem. While the koi bettas run $20 and I got a really beautiful one for $30, most of the better trated fish store bettas only cost $7.99 and had the looks of Petco's similarly priced ones, so there is room to improve their game (although female bettas aren't a focus for Petco).

The exotic does make sense now, with having koi pattern & dumbos. Dumbo seem somewhat common, genetically they are hard to get. Both parents have to carry the recessive genotype to create the Dumbo ear. If one parent is a Dumbo and another one is a different fin type. The other fin type is more dominant. Same with koi, maybe 25% will have the koi pattern, the rest will have the more dominant color like royal blues, reds..ect. I imagine they probably sell giants as well, because they have to have both giants to create 100% giants. If they have a hybrid × regular then it'll be 50/50% of both sizes. The exotic probably means genetics that are more challenging to get. In Canada, the stores I've been too, big chain stores or a local shop they often sell koi's, dumbo's at around $30 each plus tax. The standard betta is usually a veiltail because that tail trait is the most dominant for genotypes. Longer fins genetically carry over short fins. There's a whole complex behind cross breeding too. I think you are correct with the genetics of the cheaper ones. Most pet stores sell breeder rejects. Local breeders or import breeders sell bulk cheap bettas that don't have the coloration or desired tail type. 😊

It depends on the tail type, longer finned bettas have a harder time swimming. Adding a lower flow filter & lots of plants to rest on is important. Plus to make sure tank mates are appropriate to ensure safety for the species. If the betta is a halfmoon plakat, that tank would be ok because the shorter fins have an easier time swimming. :)

At one point in time, I was taking care of around seven different tanks. My collection has slowly deleted due to my fish dying of old age. Five which were betas I had one premium beta. He was $20 and we named him colonel. And the rest were all the “Standard betas” bought as adults. I had two females and two other males, all of which were absolutely gorgeous. All of them lived around 2-3 years. So I don’t think the price range is accurate at all.

Based on my experience, the cheaper the betta, the longer it will live. I bought a fancy betta before but it didn't even last a year compared to my cheap betta whos living for 2yrs now.
