I've been living in Indonesia for a while now. Where ever you go in Indonesia you will find birds for sale. In Jakarta there are fish markets, bird markets, and other pet markets. They are really different then other places and some aren't cared for that well but it's mainly because of their culture. I'm already used to other cultures doing things differently. The fish market I've been to has both saltwater and freshwater stuff for really cheap. You could buy really cool coral for under $3. You can also find sharks and other uncommon stuff.

Buying fishes on the roadside is common in many nations . The US wants you to buy from established stores where you pay much more for the same item. That way everything is taxed and over priced. im glad you travel outside the US to see how the US chose to cut of small people to favor companies . Roadside shops gives many people an avenue to make extra money to support their families . i lived in the Caribbean where i get fishes from small fish breeders . no fish was over 1$ - $5 USD, but in the US where i live now , most decent fishes are double and most times triple in price and even more . i have a salt water tank at both homes , and it costed me 100 to to stock my aquarium in the Caribbean but the same fishes here cost in the Thousands here. the quality of the fishes i bought from roadside vendors was also far superior to the ones i buy now from the US pet shops , the fishes lived longer and more resilient . We have gotten used to paying high prices for everything in the US so when we see cheap prices we question the quality of the product being sold

well actually, we also more proper fish store here in Indonesia especially if it was in big city only have to look for them and you will find it. yes, most of it it may look less pro if you compare with the fish store on most of the western country. But hey we are getting there, but even with less advance equipment most of us Indonesian still manage to keep them right. Can't agree more with you, great respect to him.

Well the fish in the US are usually quality and that is kind of better because most of those in 3rd world countries are wild caught and not good for the environment where as aquacultured fish are captive-bred and less likely to have parasites
@NoName-it4uu
@NoName-it4uu 4 жыл бұрын
@@Keon_MkIX not entirely true since most of these "quality" fish are bred outside the US. (I'm not saying that all of them are but since the US weather isn't really that great for breeding fish all year long especially tropical fish, that's why some stores just import them from the outside and most of them came the SEA nations where big fish farms can be found.) You can actually see this in some of the other KZbinr's unboxing videos where some of them says where it came from. In the case of saltwater fish, one of the reasons it is pricey is because it doesn't go straight from breeder to consumer/pet store, there are usually people that operate in the middle of that transaction which could add up in the final price.

Hey! i’m from Indo, and let me tell you that this is something really common in Indonesia! and a lot of ppl also prefer to buy fish from the streets bcs the price is much cheaper! there’s not a lot of stores for buying fish here, they’re usually located at malls and they’re hella expensive there, so a lot just buy from the streets😊

Definitely different from what we see here, but then again, we pay a premium here in the states to get fish and birds the way we do. Realistically speaking, mollys are sold for about $5-$6 here and that price would be siginificantly lower if we didnt have to go to big stores like Petco where the fish are passed through different distributors and each adding a price onto each fish as it goes thru the system. Same thing goes with corals, if we lived in Bali where most corals come from, the price would be significantly cheaper as we would get it almost from the source rather than go thru 5 different channels.
@michaelmccarthy4077

"if we didnt have to go to big stores like Petco where the fish are passed through different distributors " 1) you don't have to go to Petco or other big box stores 2) they pass through _ONE_ distributor before getting to one of those stores. The chain is farm--->wholesaler--->store for domestically raised fish and farm--->int'l wholesaler--->US wholesaler---->stores for imported fish.

Bruh. That's not always the case though. I live in Jakarta and the price for imported, exotic fish are relatively the same as native fish (motoro stingrays usually go for 60 usd and maru snakeheads, native fish from borneo, will go for 55 usd). I think it's more about availability, rarity, and the fact that Indonesia practically taxes nothing. We can get a bag of 50 mollies for 6 usd.

Many years ago as a kid in London, UK, I used to go to a street market on Sundays where they sold fish just like this. If you can imagine selling tropical fish in the street in winter in the UK, they used to have them all in small jars that they kept topping up with boiling water from a kettle every 15 minutes or so. I used to buy a lot of fish there. The fish were always hardier and better quality than any I bought from aquarium shops at the time. A few years later, new regulations came in and all live animals were banned from being sold in street markets in the UK.

Welcome to the pet industry of Asia, I was in Ubud for about a week last year and I remember roadside fish shops like this. I live in Shanghai and have traveled a lot of Asia and yeah most pet stores are pretty much just cat and dog. Lots of markets and little fish shops like this one all over Asia. The markets are much bigger and a lot more variety in what you will see. The pre bagged fish is always a strange sight but fish move quick so it's typically not an issue, although I was in a fish market in Bangkok in February and they had stingrays and all kinds of monster fish pre bagged like that. It's a different world the pet industry in Asia.

It was nice that u presented this without trying to judge the situation. A roadside pet fish market is new for me. Hahaha. But works for their situation. Was the water in the big tub, maybe river water? I’ve been in chicken houses here at home... USA... and driven down the hwy to see chickens stacked in cages by the thousands on a semi truck bed and it all really gets to me. Just as much as all the birds in the video, plus all the fumes they must breathe in all day. Seeing such beautiful birds in cramped quarters. Wondering when is the last time they got to fly. And we have that at all the pet stores here too 🤷‍♀️. I wish us ole humans could do animals better but everything revolves around money, I guess. They r all so gorgeous and I always feel bad for them. I’m not a vegetarian and I do love seeing animals up close or holding them so I guess I’m part of the durn problem 😏

I spent some time in Jakarta in early January and did not see any roadside fish stands but in the city they do have fish stores. Many more bird and rabbit stores but I did see some fish ones. Also my friend in Jakarta said that many people just drive their birds around on mopeds so keep an eye out for that! So animal welfare and care is different in Indonesia but its cool to see that no matter where you go in the world beautiful animals and colors capture the human eye.

Both street vendor and high end fish store do exist in Indonesia. The street vendor one are quite interesting because sometimes the fishes are quite decent and cheap because they didn't pay any rent expenditure (well except for street vendors who selling expensive rare fishes & animal). Some even selling fish in their bike! I believe all Asian countries have street fish store like that. Oh yeah perhaps it's pretty cheap because fish farmers are plenty in Asian countries such as Indonesia. So the fishes isn't hard to find, hence leads to their cheap price. Well.. high quality fish, rare, and other "luxurious" species are still expensive too ofc.

In the PH (Philippines) sometimes the quality of fish inside a pet store is same with those who are selling on the roadside. The only difference is the stress that the fish are into, I bought 9 common goldfish from a stall beside a wet market costing around $2, its been two months and only 4 are alive. The others died of ich but the rest are doing fine in my outdoor fish pen, getting bigger than my fancy goldies in my indoor aquarium. You may want to also visit the PH, many are fish lovers here and most of the hobbyists also breed bettas and goldfish on their backyard. Nice videos btw! Keep them coming. 😀

It's actually very common for fishes to be bagged up and displayed like that in Asia. Well for at least from where I'm from. If you ever do stop by Hong Kong in the future, do check out the goldfish market/pet street. You see a whole street selling different type of animals and row upon rows of bagged up fish from guppies to huge discus and plants. I know it might look very cruel to most people who are not familiar with it, but those fishes don't stay on the racks for very long before they get sold.

The price is quite premium about 70 dollar but they sold in one of street in Jakarta (Jatinegara). If the price is about 70 dollar, they will keep them alive for sure (and it is in the same plastics). Don't worry for the fishes, they will stay alive for one day.

As an Indonesian to buy fish or fish related stuff depends on the area. But yeah most of the time fish shop is by the road. But not all of them like this there's some that's in the building but selling animals by the road like this is normal. Usually the one that's in the building is way more expensive so it's cheaper to buy one from beside the road. It's true that pet shop mostly only sells cat or dog related supplies. So yeah it's kinda hard to find fish specialized store in Indonesia if it's not through online shop, especially in Bali.

It’s really sad to see all the birds kept like that all cramped together :( I’ve kept birds all my life I’m 23 now my mum has kept birds all of her life and her mum kept them I’ve always had aviaries around 16ft by 10ft and only kept 4 birds per aviary

We go to Bali a few times year (2hr plane ride from Australia!) and it's pretty normal! Street vendors are how pretty much everything is sold over there.

The fishes you saw on the roadside vendor were not so good. Those fishes usually comes with bad coloration and abnormalities. Those fishes were just lil bit higher on quality than feeder fish. If you want the top notch just go to farmers,they are everywhere(if you lived/stay in Java) . Top grade fishes will cost you maxed 20 dollar(except predatory fish, kois) . I mean you can get grade A contest worthy guppies for cheap. Real cheap. Ps I just remember some of predatory fishes were sold real cheap now. Alligator gars, channidae(depends on the kinds, not Barca ofc), catfishes.

Hey dude, if you ever went to Indonesia again, come to Its 'current' capital, Jakarta. And visit these 2 places Jatinegara and Sumenep market. Both of those places are basically the boss of fish street vendors. They are basically laid like a fish festival, but its filled with animals for sale.

I’m Indonesian and I am so torn. As an Animal lover, I hate the way Animals are treated in SE Asia (Actually in Asia in general), but at the same time I know how hard it is to make a living and survive in these Countries. As a child I remember Fish Abung (Indonesian street Vendors) traveling on bicycles with 100s of those fish in bags strapped on and a cage of Chicks/Ducklings and all sorts of animals going around the suburbs selling them for peanuts (Cheap) You name it, you can find and purchase these poor animals from street vendors, market stalls, traveling vendors etc. There are no strict restrictions or regulations to protect the Animal, they are locked in tiny cages by the dozens in the scorching heat of Asia, no food, no water and soo young, if they aren’t bred by the hundreds, they are wild captured. It’s heartbreaking in all it’s monstrous glory. The Animals suffer, but the people don’t see a better way to support their families. @CoralFish12g I know it is difficult to speak up and speak out, but for you to showcase these practices does not help the cause. It is fueling the fire. You are growing with every new video and I congratulate you, hopefully, one day you will be huge and make a difference, start now by saying the truth, even if it doesn’t get you likes.

I think that these sorts of stores are fitting for the area, my only concern would be the level of care each creature can receive just due to the sheer number of animals. But it is very interesting to see how other cultures and areas buy and sell animals, and there are definitely pros and cons to both their way and our US way.
