Nice review, man. I'm glad you didn't use the words 'beginner instrument'. I'm no beginner, but doing my own recordings means multiple guitars, basses, drums and everything. Not all of us can afford high end instruments so if you find a diamond in the rough it's good news.

Got mine today $66. All I can says is how do they do it. The Tuners are good, the body is nice and light, the pickups are ok, the frets are decent. It was intonated. Action was decent. Strings are eh but who cares i just bought a set of Ernies for $14. Came with a cord and allen wrench. Oh and PS The Paint job is amazing. A Great Bass for beginner to the intermediate level.

Evanage That’s the downside of music stores. I hate employees who do that because they’ll assume that even an expert is a dumbass. If I go in and say I have no more than a couple hundred bucks for an instrument, don’t try to hand me an American Ultra bass. I can’t make $1500 magically appear.

This has got to be the best review i have ever watched. Not a lot of BS! I am glad that you patched in videos playing the same bass lines on different bass guitars and I have to say that i preferred the sound of the glarry over the epiphone. I picked one of these Glarrys up second hand from someone that never pulled it out of the box. For the $60 dollars that i paid for it i was pretty impressed. I am more of a 5 string player but for laying around the house and picking to warm up, this bass is perfect. Thanks for the awesome review!

Just got one. Price is up to $79 plus $10 shipping but still a good deal. I chose transparent yellow. Finish looks awesome and the wood grain also looks great. Worth it for me just on looks alone as I added it to my wall display. It's not too bad out of the box but desperately needs better strings. The pickups are very much on the quiet side. I have an ibanez bass too and this one sounds almost as good just not as loud. Has major neck dive as the body is too light relative to the headstock but it was super cheap so it more than meets my expectations.
@legendsofthebravebard

If your strings are as far away from the pickup as the one in the video, that might be part of the cause of the quiet pick issue.

Love the straight talking. I love it especially the grain patterns' never knew basswood was so cool. The blemishes are part of the tree, they select more perfect wood for more expensive guitars but I think it makes it unique. only question is that for a bit more you could get a Squire. But I always just put fake fender stickers over the cheap bass logos anyway when I gig and nobody ever questioned it

What a great review on such a low cost bass guitar. I've been playing bass for 41 years and I am convinced fat in 2 days I'm ordering both a jazz bass and a precision bass from glarry. Yes I will do a couple of modifications to the back of the necks. I prefer having a finished neck. I'm going to contact glarry and let them know that since I'm in the studio working on a project I plan to use both basses on the project.

A few comments, Whip: 1) you didn't open up the pickguard and look at the wiring inside 2) the maker actually states the woods are composite wood-synthetics. So, for example...the fingerboard looks so uniform probably because it is synthetic which was (as you posit) striated/milled witha wood pattern 3) When you had a vid shot of the nut, we could see the hole for the truss rod end was pretty rough around its edges. Didn't seem to have been finished/sanded much. Should have mentioned that. 4) Would have helped the viewer if you had given some playing samples with the tone controls set differently, so we could hear how the tone control effects the sound of the bass. 5) Something I would have been curious about: Is the pickguard specification and the pickup location identical to a real P-bass ? IOW, could a replacement P-bass style pickguard be installed on this body ? Would it fit ? Other than that, you covered good stuff. Thanks.

I've had a couple of Fender P-basses and a Fender Jazz (Mexican with active electronics - best bass I've ever owned). ... and lots of other basses. My first Fender P-bass ('73) cost me $350 back in 1976 with case. It was a beauty - sunburst finish with tortoise shell pickguard and rosewood fretboard. Unfortunately it got stolen.... I still miss it. My next P-bass was a '76 - black with white pickguard and maple neck. Not a bad sound but the neck was hard to keep in line. I sold it to get money to go to school. I bought the other basses later including the Jazz. 'It's surprising to be able to get a bass of this quality for that kind of money. I'm thinking of getting one to add to my collection.

Great review...I've been looking at a lot of the Glarry line. And, I really like the way the "burlywood" finish looks. BTW...I think you're looking at that stain on the bottom in reverse. The dark area is the way the wood should look. The lighter areas framing the dark stripe are all glue stains. Glue makes it difficult for the wood to absorb the clear coat and get that richer look. I agree...no biggie and a bargain guitar. But, it would be nice if they spent just a little more time cleaning that up in the sanding.

Btw I noticed the same thing on the fretboard that you did . The uniformity of the grain tells me they did something to it to probably compensate for the lower quality of wood . Which I'm not complaining . I've looked everywhere you'll never find a better bass for the money on 2021 .

I'll leave the passive electronics alone, unless there is a problem. Thanks for posting friend.

Hi Whip - I just saw your channel for the first time and saw what you were reviewing and since I too recently purchased one I was curious about your thoughts. I liked what I saw and how you do your videos so I subbed to your channel and look forward to going through your previous videos and viewing your new ones as they come out. As I said I too purchased this bass about 6 months ago and here are my thoughts on it - To begin with, I am a guitar player who wants to learn how to play bass so I really cannot base my review on experience of previous basses, although I did have another bass a few years ago. I was purchased this bass along with another Glarry guitar, I have since sold the guitar to a grandmother looking to buy her 16 year old grandson a beginner type guitar. Pros - Seems to be well built for such an affordable price, everything lined up as it should with no real issues cosmetically. The tones seem to be very nice and well I guess it "sounds like a bass" lol. The finish and clear coat were both very nice and I have not found any defects. I purchased mine in the tobacco sunburst finish. Cons - Where the pickguard and neck meet, at the very end of the neck, the pickguard could have been trimmed a little neater. There was some curled up plasticfrom the pick guard. The output jack would cut out periodically. I contacted Glarry via email about this issue and they immediately offered me a replacement bass, that impressed me! Because of the price of the bass and the fact I am a nice guy and I know the costs of shipping, I told them that I would replace the jack with one I had so long as they were OK with my doing so and it would not void the warranty. They told me to go ahead and the warranty would not be affected. So in a matter of about 10 minutes I changed the output jack and have had no issues since doing so. I told Glarry that it was fine and they still told if I was still unsatisfied they would replace the bass. I plan on keeping it so I told them that appreciated but not necessary. The neck had no relief at all. A simple fix by using the supplied allen wrench. The action was quite high, a few turns of the bridge saddle screws and that issue was fixed. So all in all I am quite satisfied with this bass and I would certainly recommend Glarry instruments. I have not tried one of their acoustics but as I have said I did buy a bass and an electric and both instruments, again "for the money", were quite good and worth recommending. Little things like what you found on the bottom of your bass, that "stain", to me anyway give the guitar character. I love to find little knots in the wood or some weird grain pattern, it just makes the guitar sort of unique. Glarry's customer service is tops, their shipping and handling and purchasing departments are what one would expect those areas to be, professional and a 100% customer satisfaction is an obvious goal that the company has set and should be close to, you can't please everyone lol. If you are one who is buying an instrument in this price range and yet you expect to receive a $2,000 Gibson you will be disappointed. If you are buying an instrument in this price range and are expecting to get a cheapo guitar, you will be surprised to find you are getting more than what you thought!

Now if you want a bass that is cheap and from a well respected brand, I HIGHLY suggest getting an Ibanez GSR200, it’s $200, it looks great, it sounds great, and it feels like it’s more than 200 dollars worth of a bass.

This may be a long comment, I have been doing some research on these basses. Ok, Glarry Ammoonn Harley Benton Irin BC GoPlus and the list goes on......All seem to be the same (or close) to the same manufacturer, they all have the same things in common, but the big tell for me is the 7 screw bridge. Now, Harley Benton (Thomann house brand) is all over KZbin so there must be better QC from these guys so maybe you can check out some of their stuff, the specs for the money are really impressive. They have a PRS clone with Alnico 5 buckers for 144.00 + 34.00 shipping . Check em out! Again, Great channel, love the fact that you are not a "guitar snob" like some guys on here that just NIT PICK the hell out of cheap gear. Thanks for being a real Dude! Nash

Dave, are you drop tuned on the Thunderbird ?? Sounds almost like a lower octave than the Glarry, with the Glarry being kinda high pitched and tinny. But for $66, you can even replace the pickups and tuners and still be ahead with wood that good. Been looking at getting a cheap "beater bass" to play with, and this might be the answer since peavey has gone to the dogs. (was my "hometown" company) The fingerboard wood is a species of rosewood that cheaper Asian guitars tend to use. Squier uses it some, and most Chinese cheapos use it. Great channel BTW. found it by accident. Keep being Radical !!!!

Update::::: I found out today if anyone buys one of these units on EBAY they will not get any warranty or service from Glarry Music Company as per one of their company representatives. The only way they get the 6 month warranty is to buy direct from Glarry. I would recommend in that case to buy the square trade warranty or any other warranty you can buy on Ebay at the time of the purchase.

The fingerboard looks like Blackwood, which is some compressed and treated wood. Cheap guitars often have thick necks. I suppose it is a way of ensuring stability without being too selective on the wood used. Are the frets level enough to lower the action after filing the nut down to something proper? That's the real test. That and the neck angle. These things can be fixed and adjusted by someone who knows what to do and they are what easily spreads all over the place under loose quality control. If the makers sent you this guitar for review purposes, they made sure you got a good one.

You may be right about the thickness of the neck / cheap wood thing. I love a thick neck so its a plus for me. The frets are quite level! Believe it or not they are pretty well done. No loose frets , no high frets. Nothing special as far as finish to the rest themselves, They don't appear to be dressed in any way.....but they are level!

@@whipscheapguitars2856 so i talked myself out of buying this. here is why, my first bass was pure junk for 100 bucks. i immediately saved up 75 bucks and replaced the stock pickups with EMGs and the bass sang great but did not stay in tune much. 35 dollars later and Baddass bass bridge helped. I realized a 100 dollar bass turned into an over priced project and will just stick with my original plan and finding a used Classic Vibe Squier P-Bass. i currently own two Ernie Ball Stingrays (fretless and fretted) and a Korean made Fender Jazz 24.

The new squire stuff is really nice. But, you wouldn't have any issues keeping this guitar in tune. It has a very stable neck. I generally find that tuning issues are 90% of the time ( nut-related).

I saw some other reviews of glarry basses and a couple of them mention it's a bit neck heavy...did you experience that with it? I'm not a fan of an instrument that's neck heavy...don't want to be holding it up by the neck while I'm playing.. the body should be heavy enough that your fret hand is free to move about without the instrument taking a dive on ya! Nice review - That is a amazing price - I don't think that is a rosewood fret board - one question - is the scale 34" or 30" short scale - I was hoping it was a short scale - I had a 1971 Fender Mustang bass short scale - you could rip on it. thanks for posting ,ya do a great job. signed your new subscriber - 53 years playing

I bought one from Ebay too, same color, no name on headstock. The frets were sharp. The nut had burrs. The neck pocket was full of lacquer and sawdust. The tuning machines were loose. The output jack is sloppy. There's a big dent in the back. The pickups were screwed all the way down. There was a dead bug and debris under the scratch plate. After some work and a .02 neck shim...it's ok.

I bought a bass for about this price. If memory serves, I think mine was about $68. Maybe this one is better but mine,.... at first it was great. It sounds good, it looks great, it plays okay but after a while, the neck bows ever so slightly and it's just like "I just want a better bass." y'know? A guitar can be manufactured very cheaply and you can get a lot of music out of it for a long time but a bass is just a little different. For me, I just want to feel that quality in a bass. With a guitar I like the challenge of making music with a less than perfect instrument but bass doesn't really lend itself to that. Or maybe it's just my psychological biases and tendencies. But it's your dime. Go for it at that price. You might as well see for yourself at that price.

Looks like an awesome first bass guitar. Main problem I see for me is... I have small hands. I learned bass in a Fender Precision in the early 1970's. I played an old Höfner for years but my arthritic hands couldn't take the abuse of playing bass anymore. About 10 years ago my old high school buddy was bugging and bugging me to play bass for him, he figured he had "one last album" in him, and said I was the only bass player he knew that could "keep up with him." In 1969 he rode his bicycle 5 miles to my house to borrow my guitar, to see if he "liked" guitar. Within a year he had far surpassed me and became one of the baddest guitarists I've ever known. In 1971 I formed my one and only band, and even though I had been playing guitar 8 years by then, he was the guitarist in the band, I played conga. Our very first gig, at the same exact venue where Jerry Garcia played his very first live gig 10 years earlier (at our high school cafetorium (cafeteria / auditorium), I realized that I DO NOT like being on stage. I quit the band and became the soundman, and did that for 20 years. 10 years ago when my buddy was bugging me to play bass for him and help him produce a CD he wouldn't believe me that I didn't play bass anymore. So I "gave" him my Höfner bass to prove to him I didn't play it anymore. The last time I visited him was about 5 years ago. He was in his bedroom on his computer, I pulled my old Höfner off the wall and started playing it. After a few minutes I heard from the other room, "are you playing slide on the bass?" I chuckled.. yes I was.

Slide bass is similar to playing fretless, you need to be much more precise than playing a fretted instrument. But it allows you to play 1/4 notes which can give you a more Eastern Indian / Asian sound. And the ability to slide into, or out of, notes. The actual sound is more "metalic" than playing with your fingers, though that may have been partially due to the fact I was using a brass tone bar (slide). I would no doubt be a smoother sound if I had used ceramic, pyrex, or glass. It is a unique sound, I've never heard anyone play slide bass before. Probably not the easiest way to play bass, but I am a slide guitar player. Grab a deep well socket that fits your finger out of your tool box and give it a try :>

I have my doubts an album will happen. We live a few hundred miles apart from each other, I don't drive so I would need to go to his place for a month or more to learn the songs, record them, and product a CD. I have pets, and no one to watch them if I were to leave for awhile. And his drug and alcohol abuse, and lack of respect that I have been clean for 35 years.
