True! Funny enough, although Trogly has a personal inclination for rather expensive guitars, Glary keeps sponsoring some his videos on a regular basis. I think this shows 2 things, Trogly is not a complete guitar snob and Gibson is foolish for not sponsoring some of his videos, since they'd be dealing with a won-over aficionado!

I'm getting on in years and it amazes me what is available to youngsters starting out today at affordable prices. in the 70s and 80s affordable guitars where junk and they cost $250 in 80s $. Thats got to be $500 + in todays money

TooBarFoo I agree, I purchased my first real guitar in 1974, $250 for a brand new Fender Mustang. It was a nice guitar only because I'd only had a $100 Hondo II SG copy to compare it to. I'm amazed what is available these days.
@kevbob

Same TBF. My first electric was a terrible SG copy with action so bad. I reckon it was about $150. Calculated from 1978 with inflation, that’s about $600. I upgraded as fast as I could.

Absolutely agree. Had to get to that 500-ish dollar mark to get a decent guitar, and 500 was a lot of money in the 70's. Now a 100 buck guitar can be pretty playable.

I got my first guitar in 1986. It was a Peavey T-15 with a hard plastic case that had an amp built into it. It cost $400 brand new, and was the least expensive electric guitar in the only guitar store in my hometown. Fender and Gibson owners at the time really talked trash about Peavey guitars (oddly enough some of them used Peavey amps), but they were really well made guitars especially considering the price. Unfortunately, I went through a heavy metal phase and traded the Peavey for a Japanese made Explorer copy because it looked cool and sounded decent. However, it played horribly, and I got tired of the body shape very quickly. I came to my senses and bought a Squier Strat a few years later, and I’ve supported Fender (and its other brands) ever since. The improvements in quality of even the lowest end guitars today is truly amazing.

I had a really bad acoustic as a young teen. My first electric was actually a early 60's tele. Bought around 76. Bought it in a pawn shop in London. I paid it off every week for about 3 months on layby. In those days old teles were kind of unwanted. Everyone wanted a Strat so 60's Teles and Jags could be found for knock down prices. Still cost me around a months and a half's wages. I played in a Punk band and old Telecasters and Jaguars where main stays as the most affordable options around. Good times!

I think that mini Strat was only played for a couple months before our youngest switched to a full-sized guitar. That lonely little mini Strat has sat unplayed and unloved in the corner of my office for the last 24 years!

@hkguitar1984

That chip is where the pickup circuit's ground wire attached. If they don't relieve/chip the top a little bit the bridge won't sit flush against the body as the wire would sit above the body's top surface. Granted there are more eloquent ways to do that, however it is a result of the ground wire.

It's worth the money to get the Warwick EMP strings, about $50 for a 5 string set, do I'd guess $40ish for a 4 string. They're not as rough as the other strings. I don't remember which color is lowest level, but the two levels above the bottom are also noticeably improved (in my personal opinion, of course)

On the frets is that just regular oxidation? How are frets cut? Are they stainless, I doubt it. Even if you are paid to show it at least you show why it's better than before or why not.

It almost looks like the Bass string was rubbing on the frets during shipping. I didn't see any packing media between the strings and the frets/fingerboard. And then oxidation as well, really difficult to tell how extreme what conditions that Bass traveled through on its shipping journey.

I agree, when it's time to upgrade you can get most of your money back if you buy a decent brand names guitar to begin with. Used squire classic vibe for instance you will be able to sell it for what you paid for it used, the glarry you might get 50 bucks out of if you can find anyone willing to buy it. The only reason I could see to buy one is If you really just want the body and neck to build a project guitar but even then I'd buy an sx guitar I picked up one of their classic tele's for a project and it was so good I just left it alone and played it for like two years and then gave it to my son and it's great but I'd be lucky to get 50 bucks if I tried sell it.

I think I would use the 0000 steel wool on the headstock and fretboard too, along with the virtuoso polish. That looks fantastic. The bass sounds great too. I may have to invest in one of these

Jeez that doesn't sound half bad. Considering how little you have to actually setup, as a professional bassist I'd say that's good value for money

Kinda disappointed this gets a review and the gold anniversary firebird just gets shipped off. I understand you gotta do the sponsored stuff to make a living so maybe there's no solution. Plus you already have a ton of guitars as a one man operation! So no hate, appreciate what you do.

Beautiful, I have two Glarry jazz basses and I love that sunburst P. The maple neck is a great upgrade too. With some other light changes they're decent basses, at least the "old" ones I have. Thanks for more bass coverage Trogly!

I love to tinker with and upgrade guitars and basses. Based on several video reviews I decided to buy the original Glarry P-Bass for the purpose of improving it. I replaced the pickup with a GLS overwound hot pickup and installed their Kwik-Plug wiring system. This made a huge difference. I thinned out the neck and polished it, which was another big improvement. I replaced the bridge with a heavier one, but this did nothing to reduce neck dive. I replaced the nut with bone. I also polished the fret ends. The neck pocket was slightly wide, so I put in a shim. The result was a bass guitar that was much improved. I loved the light weight, by the way. When Glarry came out with their upgraded line, I bought an upgraded Jazz Bass so as to compare it with the original. What I found was pretty much what Trogly did. It did not need much work at all, save thinning and polishing the neck and dressing the fret ends. The neck dive of the original bass was a non-issue, and it sounded great. I have taken both basses to open mic nights and have enjoyed playing them. very much..

I bought and received one of these basses (in Burlywood) a few weeks ago. I am one of those tinkerer types who could indeed swap pickups, etc., but I wanted to skip some steps if possible. I lurked on the eBay page with that bass for days, which had an unexpected effect: Glarry offered me a deal! It wasn't a deal I COULDN'T refuse, but I didn't. I AIN'T SORRY! I have not owned a bass in about 40 years, so I had no expectations about playability. I didn't have bass chops anymore, so I wouldn't be able to judge. Feel-wise, though, I found the bass to be playable out of the box. I gave the neck a bit more relief than it came with, but that was just to remove some very annoying fret buzz. My impression of the bone nut was that it was pretty decent, which was very nice. I did not relish the thought of replacing this nut as I don't do string nuts well yet (if ever), but it's not a problem here. I did have one issue with the pickup. I didn't know that P-Bass pickups secure to the body rather than the pickguard, so it was a surprise to learn that I couldn't raise the pickup as close to the strings as I thought they needed to be. This was when being a budding guitar/bass tech came into play for me, as I removed the pickguard to look beneath and find the problem. The cushions on the bottom of my Wilkie pickup were not NEARLY as thick as the ones I saw on your bass. I didn't and don't know if you can get new cushions for pickups mounted in this way, but I MacGuyver'ed my own solution: I grabbed a couple of caps from some old vitamin bottles and placed them under the cushions. Perhaps this is not the most elegant of solutions, but I defy you to find it without going inside the bass! Going forward, I may try some other solutions -- partially because the coil under the 3rd and 4th strings is tilted. It still sounds good, but the look annoys me. It doesn't stop me from playing, though. It just occured to me that this pickup height issue might be what caused Glarry to offer me the deal, too! I can live with that, because the deal saved me about $30 and the solution saved a couple of bottle caps from the trash!😎 A question for you: What is the non-upgrade bass' bridge made from? I bought my bass thinking that I would upgrade the bridge, but got curious as to what I already had, so I gave it the magnet test. I found that the base plate is magnetic and therefore probably steel; to my surprise, the saddles are magnetic as well! This is VERY good news to me, since I didn't find any bridges that looked like a good bet to replace the stock bridge with. Some of the measurements seemed to be off, and most of the replacement bridges I saw seemed to lack the two upper (neck side) screws. With the base plate being steel, I feel that I can leave it alone and replace the stock saddles with brass ones. Honestly, I'm feeling little urge to do that for the moment. That means that the only things I'm really considering swapping out are the tuners. In truth, I'm not even sure that's necessary. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a DigiTech BP355 Modelling Bass Processor for a range of amplifier and effects tones for cheap money. (You can only get these used, as they're discontinued.) This pair has proven to be a regular bass Dynamic Duo! The BP has a 4-band EQ with sweepable midrange and treble controls and shelving bass and presence controls. With these combined with the decently large number of amp and cabinet simulations, I've managed to make this axe sound almost like an Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray bass, which I consider the best bass in the world. Outstanding! The price tag for all this? Around $200‼️ ALSO outstanding! I personally would recommend this bass guitar to the same sorts that should be buying other Glarry instruments: Tinkerers and techs. You made a good point about the neck's back being better after some treatment (although my standards apparently are not so high that I mind my neck as is). The issue I had with the pickup makes me think that these axes are pretty much the same crap shoot as Glarry's other offerings ... your mileage WILL vary, so be prepared. All that said, the only reason I would hesitate to rock this bass on stage right now is that I'M not ready! Brother needs practice! I'm also going to put MUCH lighter strings on it, to make it play more like a guitar. After all, once I get more used to it, I can raise the string's gauge and reset the guitar appropriately. 'Nuff said!😎❤️️🎸‼️

Warwick strings are way less than 30$. They are sold for 10€ in Europe and are some of the cheapest string out there. Nothing wrong with them but with 30$ you get daddario or more.

I have three Glarry ones. One Precision, one Jazz and a Stratocaster guitar. For the price... Solid construction, nice finish, real twins-clones of a REGULAR Fender (not a special edition). All you have to do is to change the pick-ups and strings. The Glarry sounds good but... I put Wilkinson pickups 25$ and Ernie Ball strings 25$. And because i've opened them, i shielded them with copper tape 15$ even if they don't make noise. The result is awsome and even a Fender won't sound and look better. So all in all it is a 200$ bass or guitar. Try them!

Too bad you didn't get a jazz bass to review. Glad Glarry decided to upgrade their basses a little. I had to do most of that myself (New bridge, new pickups, new strings). I doubled the cost of my first glarry, but it was fun taking it down and rebuilding it. Awesome video.
