Study traditional work jigs and you will come up with lots of ideas like this and maybe even better fit outs for your bench. I have made a traditional bench that has no vice on it at all but has lots of dog holes, side rails, and fittings that can allow me to do anything I want. There are videos on work benches without vices.

Colin, you are a gem! Like Graham Welch, I've been watching your stuff for years, and always appreciated your generosity in sharing excellent advice and tips. This is an absolutely brilliant idea. Like you, I don't have the need for a moxon vise that often, and would find it a nuisance as a permanent fixture on my bench. But this is such an easy win, and is now very near the top of my 'to do' list. Thanks for sharing! 👍

That is a good video to get people thinking outside the box. You can modify your bench to fit jigs that can do very similar things to a vice.

the genius of simplicity. Thank you Colin and Tony.

What a great idea. I shall make one tomorrow 😀. Simplicity is best. Also it’s quicker and better than hand wheels and threaded rods , and the clamps could have higher up slots to eliminate racking. It’s faster to adjust the clamps than spin the hand wheels. The slots could be angled to 45 degrees to facilitate grip higher up. It could even be more simplified either with multiple slots to prevent racking or no slots and just position the clamps at each end. The faces could be as long as you have space for. I think I would go for two slots on in middle and one high up. 15 minutes work and no cost if you have bits of wood and 4 clamps

This is so awesome and affordable for us casual DIYers who need a Moxon Vise. I made a mini MFT worktable and all the Moxon clamps, hardware are too bulky / large for my mini worktable. But with this, I can scale the vise down and use 6in bar clamps. Thank you to you and your viewer who sent it in. I’m making this!

I made that kind of vise in 2017 in Germany. I had an art residency there and made art objects and sculpturs using that type Moxxon vise Japanese saws and chisels... Nice memories 😊

I really like this design. The jaw location can be easily reversed so that the movable jaw is on the bench. The clamps for the jaws would remain the same. A dedicated pair of six inch C clamps to hold to the bench would work very well. Either screw type or ratchet type bar clamps would work. I like the screw style when I will be hammering - they tend to hold better then the ratchet style. Simple. Nearly unlimited capacity. Strong. Too easy to build and store. No need for dedicated space for storage. Thank you.

God bless Tony and Colin for instantly making a Moxon vise a possibility for many. I’m glad to say I thought of this first and then went looking to see if anyone else had done it. I had given it a bit more design though, see below. First thought was…..why cut the slots so wide? It makes for a very sloppy setup. Second thought was ….. this would work much better with quick grip clamps. Third…. The back timber would be better if it was thicker to hold the clamps more securely. Forth….. a bit of cork or rubber would help to grip the workpiece. Fifth….. rather than having long slots (presumably to be adjustable to get the best hold on the workpiece) you might as well just make a couple of vices of different lengths. I will try version with the above

And it is so easy to put away when you're done. you can even trash the wood and get some more when you need it again, it is just common wood, and we all have it lying around in the shop and it is readily available at the big box store if you have to buy some more OUTSTANDING in all respects

I know this is a little late... Great video Karl. I will be making one asap. My comment is that if you place the movable piece behind the fixed one it will sit on the bench and you wont have the hassle of it moving all over the place and trying to keep the clamps in place. You still have to put it in front for long pieces. :(

The clamps used for this moxon vise would work well for uneven objects to be clamped because the clamps on either side work independently. For example wanting to clamp a wedged piece of wood.

I didn't even know a Moxon vice was a thing! I actually built one the other day because I wanted to joint a few boards with an electric hand plane, and I don't have a bench in my shop yet. So, I scratched my head for a few minutes. . . And before I knew it (I thought) I created a pretty darn clever jig and mounted it on my tablesaw. Turns out it already is a thing. Awesome. Never heard of a Moxon vise but I can really see the appeal and practicality. Also, I looked at the Workbench Hacks video and left a comment there about improving on the metalworking vise hack. Here it is: I noticed that the metalworking vise wobbles a bit. It it is just TOO heavy for the face vise. I would suggest that the mounting should be an L shape and have the weight of the vise resting directly on the workbench. You could also have 1 or 2 strategically placed dogs on the bracket to further lock the vise into location. Great work as always, Colin!
