Even as someone who isn't into GW (but does play loads of other similar sized wargames) this strikes as a very useful video for new starters. Sometimes investing in a new hobby/army can be quite daunting and this video outlines a way in, not only is an easy entrance, but also an easy exit if the army or game is not for you - almost all the models described can be sold on to other players for their forces quite easily. Many videos exist with how to start, few provide suggestions that allow a side step or exit easily if "What if I don't enjoy it" is a brake to trying. Also, kudos to the shopping research behind this one - hope you didn't end up adding too much to your own basket!

For Khorne, $65 can get you the two 'Underworlds' kits and an Aspiring Champion, creating a pretty versatile force and it's only a couple dollars more than you mention. they are all 'Easy to Build' push fit kits as well.

Yeah, I noticed you can get the Thorns of the Briar Queen (Nighthaunt) for $25, which gives you a wizard unit for AOS (which is apparently important; I'm just learning AOS), and/or a banshee and a bunch of chain rasps for Warcry. I'm sure the others are similarly priced--great value, especially if they include leader/hero/character type models.

Definitely some good options and very helpful for new players. I will mention that the Chaos Warcry specific bands are actually cheaper than the 54 (50) for the Chaos Warriors AND you only need a rulebook to use them since they come with their cards (Scions are actually 55, but that's basically a wash). The miniatures in those boxes are also more varied in their profiles than miniatures from a single box otherwise. So if you like one of those Warbands that is a great way to start (though they are generally not super competitive if you are into that kind of thing).

Chaos aside, tip for a future video maybe, if you want to get two warbands supercheap (almost, like 1.8 warbands), go for Storm strike starter box for around 30 USD. You get nice set of SE band plus nighthaunts. Nighthaunts are missing a Leader, you can proxy it with one of minis, or look for around 10 USD leader option, i forgot the name. Still pretty cheap way to get two 1000 points teams.

Yeah, besides the warbands from the original core box these were the first two other warbands I built. Added also the Chainrasps from Crypt Hunters to my NIghthaunt and chose the Dreadwarden as their leader. Now that they proceeded in their campaign and have allies and stuff I added a single Tomb Banshee, a Spirit Torment and a Cairn Wraith.

@@somberlain3331 Yes, cairn wraith is the one to purchase separately as a potential leader. Chainrasps are also beautufil alternative, and should make the warband more optimal.

The chaos marauders are a real joy to put together. If you go that route, I highly recommend skipping the shoulder pads. They look super awkward, in my opinion. Very fun to mod the flails for great axes or mauls. Very easy and fast to paint up. :) at 2 dollars a mini you get better quality than wizkids and with more options!

The chaos warriors box only include weapon options for two hand weapons or hand weapon plus shield. The great weapon and halberd require the upgrade packs or could be converted yourself

Admittingly I'm new to war games always having played RPG's but in my first year into finally pilling the trigger whole whole heatedly I have learned what I consider one of the most important lessons. Always pick your army by what you love not because they are cheep or they are what's currently winnings. If there's no passion the chance of you never painting your models, or worse it might even cause you to stop playing.

It's worth noting that the Warcry single warband boxes are cool in that they have more personality than the single units designed for AoS. I really think the Untamed Beasts and the Scions of the Flame are worth the extra ten bucks to get some varied models with unique abilities and stats.

A box or Korn-Dawgs. Khorne deamons, flesh hounds. A box of five, has a leader, 920 points. Or new rules update, you can take a "second leader" but it just doesn't have the rune mark. Making it a 990 point group for less than 50 bucks.

For anybody that still has the old Beastgrave underworld box, Grashrak's despoilers are a great way to get some different troop choices in one box. comes with a leader, two bowmen, two spearmen and 1 pretty good melee fighter. buy another box of whichever troop choice you think is cool/good and you got yourself an army

Two Underworlds box sets will usually get you a usable warband. For Slanesh the new Pageant warband plus 3 Slangors is pretty decent.

If you're looking at Khorne mortals then the Goreblade warband is worth the small extra cost as you get a Khorgorath, few heroes, reavers and warriors so you're set up for months of swapping/playing around with the list. In almost all cases I think the increase in cost of the start collecting box is the way to go as there are options, playing the same model (with varying loadouts) isn't half as fun as mixing up the list.

I don't play Warcry, but if you want some heroes (older) Underworld warbands can be a good way to get both a hero and a few troops if your regular box isn't enough. They've hiked up the prices considerably for the two recent options though (from 22.50 to 28 to 32.50 euros). Zarbag's Gitz especially gives you quite a few models to play with (9). Check whether the models have listings before you buy though.

You can get 2 Warbands for $83.50 from GW or less from a third party. I paid $72 and change. I did it by getting the cheapest AOS starter box, and a box of Gryph-hounds. The starter box gives you a 975 point Kruleboyz force (Destruction) and a 990 point Thunderstrike Stormcasts force (Order).

Great, useful vid for folks getting into Warcry, or looking to add warbands to their collection, perhaps to use to introduce new players to the system. You pointed out the fact that the made-for-Warcry warbands in Slaves to Darkness aren't as cheap as the single-kit options you present, and you're right, but I want to float a couple of thoughts that might make someone take a second look at the Warcry warband boxes, and the warbands themselves. First, the Warcry-specific boxes come with the cards and tokens for the bands they contain, which have some value, especially if these are your first Warcry purchases. Having two sets of tokens--one for each player--really helps, even if they aren't technically the "right ones" for the warbands in play. Unless you bought the starter set, or the Catacombs box ($210!), the warband boxes are the only way I know of to get tokens at this point in time. And having the physical cards for your warband is handy during play, so you don't have to keep opening the book or copying the info onto scratch paper. Yes, card sets are available for some warbands, but many of them are out of print at this point. Alternately, if you are into the Warcry warbands, but don't need tokens or cards for whatever reason, you might consider getting the AoS boxes for those warbands. For just $65, you can get a double-set of models for each of the Warcry warbands, which I suppose makes them double-good for AoS, but also gives you flexibility when making your lists. For example, in the Iron Golems from the starter set, you have to choose EITHER the Signifer OR the Prefector, but not both, since they are basically a weapon-swap on the same model. With the AoS Iron Golems box, you can make one of each. There are other weapon choices with the Legionaries in the set that matter a bit, and having 6 to play with instead of 3 lets you make at least a couple with each weapon, so you can fine-tune your list.

Dont know if you still can get the warcry boxes everywhere however the ones from the recent warcry catacombs release should still be around if you are lucky shadowstalkers and fiery dudes

@@dmeep I picked up the Skaven Warcry box for Christmas. It's an excellent deal, especially since you get the cards and tokens along with the models. The $60 Skaven kit includes 31(!) models, including a full 20-model set of multi-part Clan Rats, two Rat Ogres, three Pack Masters and six giant rats. It's the same assortment models you'd get by buying the Clan Rats ($38) and the Rat Ogors/Packmasters($40) boxes separately, for $18 less, AND you get the cards and tokens for free! In fact, if you were starting a Skaven army for AOS, you might want to jumpstart it with a couple or three of the Warcry boxes!

Starting new armies/warbands has been pretty common during the pandemic (I've bought the Sylvaneth Underworlds warband and Ogor battleforce), but who know's when I'll get to take them to an actual game. I've got people near me in high-risk groups for COVID, so wargaming is not possible until we're absolutely sure it's safe, who knows when that'll be.

I do think you need to take in consideration that they Warcry specific boxes doesn’t require you to have the book. So even though they cost 65 dollars or more it’s cheaper than to buy the book, the core rules and the models. So in my mind you really only need a box of either one of the eight chaos warbands or the skaven warcry box and the core rules

You do have to have the Core Rule book, but you can skip (or postpone) the faction book if you buy the dedicated Warcry boxes. And for what it's worth, the Warcry boxes for the existing AoS factions are typically a tremendous value for the models they contain. The models in the Skaven box would cost $78 MSRP if you bought them as AOS kits, but the Warcry box is just $60 MSRP.

Also, there are two ways to get the Slaves to Darkness cultist warbands like the Cypher Lords and the Splintered Fang. Most of them have a $50 kit with Warcry branding that includes fighter cards and one set of models, and a $65 kit with Age of Sigmar branding that lacks the fighter cards but includes two sets of models. The $65 kits are currently GW web store only, but the $50 kits still have normal distribution.

Perhaps the following can help you with the Order Warband video. The cheapest warband I know of is made with a couple of easy to build Stormcast boxes, which are 15 USD each, giving you 6-7 models with 2 potential leaders. And if you don't have paints, you can substitute a sequitor box for the Stormcast Eternals + Paint Set (35 USD) like I did. A Sequitor Prime with 2 other Sequitors (1 with a 2-handed mace, the other with a shield like in the box) and 2 Castigators are exactly 995 points and you have a Castigator-Prime and a Gryph-hound on the side perfect for narrative campaign reinforcements. Alternatively, as pointed out in another comment here, the Storm Strike box (smallest AoS starter box) can get you 2 1000-point warbands for 40 USD, but the Nighthaunt warband doesn't have a leader unless you proxy one of the Myrmourn Banshees into a Tomb Banshee or something like that.

They are one of the cultist warbands that Uncle Atom mentions at the end of the video. In Age of Sigmar rules, they're part of the Slaves to Darkness faction. In Warcry, they're a separate faction with their own special abilities. You can buy them two different ways: as a $50 kit with Warcry branding and fighter cards, or as a $65 kit with Slaves to Darkness branding and two copies of each model.

Yeah, using WU warbands can be the core of a Warcry Warband. Ironjawz Boyz and Morgok's get you 1000 points for the Ironjawz f.e. I mixed up also some of the Khorne warbands recently, but even when you combine Bloodreavers and Blood Warriors you don't get 1000 points (from Shadespire). I bought another BW on Ebay for 5 bucks, now I got 1000, but they lack abilities and stuff.
