Great video. A welded diff is cheaper but I would save up a little more money and by a mini spool or a full spool. The amount of welding wire, gas, and time would make me spend the extra money. Plus the diff is more serviceable if it isn’t completely welded solid.
@Bleepincolt
@Bleepincolt 3 жыл бұрын
I see your point, but many people don't have the equipment or ability to set up gears. With a new full spool you'd be committed to that. A mini spool is fine but what makes the axle any more or less serviceable with a welded carrier?

im no pro, but this is usually done with offroad only rigs, your going to put tons of stress on you steering components at highway speeds and with on road traction. if you want to keep the rig good for on road you need a locker you can disengage- this goes for any vehicle

Mini spools or welded carriers in are for off road only. How will a mini spool destroy shit faster? If a welded carrier lets go your ring pinion and carrier are all fucked. Id rather replace ann axle shaft than have the diff blow apart. Videos like this breed morons
@tonyb2086
@tonyb2086 3 жыл бұрын
@@JeepTeriyaki mini spool is a problem because of the issues with "play" like was mentioned in the show. They break the end of the axle shaft off where it enters the spool, or the end of the spool breaks..or both. Thats my experience with them, but i'm a moron wtf do i know😊
@JeepTeriyaki
@JeepTeriyaki 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonyb2086 no different than it breaking off where it slides into the carrier...all it is, is a solid center or sleeved carrier. Low IQs plague posts where people hack and micky mouse drivetrains. Welded cariers are for old farm trucks. Only to be used on full time off-road shitboxes and anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron. That being said spools are better than welding carriers but still for offroad use only unless you like breaking axles and stripping ring gears like you would welding it posi like a dipshit

I’m afraid you will have to forgive me, but to me welding a differential shut constitutes the height of nuttiness to the power of 13. It would have helped if you explained the use of such folly. To understand my point it might help to let you know that I live in country where there are practically no straight roads but lots of mountains 😂. Your welding is quite decent though... as is your sense of humour!
@Bleepincolt
@Bleepincolt 3 жыл бұрын
It's no different than running a mini spool or spool in the rear axle just cheaper. It'll gain traction as with an open diff the power will only go to one wheel (the wheel with the least resistance) so with a lincoln locker(spool) you'd now have both tires giving more traction when needed.

Even when I was dirt poor I would never do this. Too permanent. Also being locked can be bad in some low traction situations and actually contribute to getting stuck. Plus it digs up trails. Plus puts extreme stress on the driveshafts and accelerates tire wear. On top of that how often do you really need it locked. I have found that seldom do I really need to be locked.
@Bleepincolt
@Bleepincolt 3 жыл бұрын
I run spools in my sami, I've never found where I get better traction unlocked ever in my life🤷‍♂️ but I've ran lincoln lockers in many of my dual purpose rigs for years.
@consaka1
@consaka1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bleepincolt my main thought there was super soft sand where you can barely go anyway and you go to turn sharp. One or both tires will dig in. I have an air locker in the back of my rig and had cases where I forgot to unlock and got into trouble because of it. Same is true of some deep snow where you just don't want slippage. Snow in particular can be dicey when you need both tires keyed in. If one tire slips then you lose it. Of course this can mostly be over compensated for with much larger tires.

@@consaka1 I don't think anyone is disagreeing that an air locker is great for the rear axle, especially a dual purpose rig. But an air locker, compressor and setting it up takes a lot more money and time than a lincoln locker on a budget wheeler.
@consaka1
@consaka1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bleepincolt I honestly wish it was a trutrac but that's what I was stuck with. But yeah my rig is honestly not a trail only rig and routinely makes trips across the country. Multi purpose if you will. For just one limited purpose I can see a lincoln locker doing the job but the downside of not being able to turn it off would really bother me as a slightly ocd person. Honestly I think I would figure out a way to selectively apply brakes to each wheel first. Lol that would at least preserve my tight steering. Oh and you need an air compressor anyway so that's not a big deal. I carry two with me everywhere and one was free thanks to a , I think , lincoln navigator.
